Chapter Four: In which Studdy goes a-travelling
A few days later, Lucius had perfected his plan and was ready to begin the first stages of it. It began simply. With Studdy seeing if he could access Hogwarts School.
The elf didn’t want to go, not if it was in some way going to help his master, but he was also excited. He might get the chance to see where his hero had lived - Dobby. Dobby had been a distant relation of Studdy’s, and had been the younger elf’s hero, ever since he had first heard the whispered story of how Dobby the House elf had defied the Malfoys, and been freed. Studdy had been traumatised when he had learnt that his hero had died during the battle, but had been proud too that the elf had been free and had played his part in one of the most significant portions of the Wizarding community’s history.
Studdy only hoped that Dobby wasn’t written out of the history books, as he knew of many instances when non-human magical creatures had had their role diminished in the formal accounts of the events. Rosta the Relentless came instantly to mind.
Rosta had been an elf. Not a house elf, although that was what he was supposed to have been. Instead Rosta had rebelled before his slavery could be enforced and had begun a private mission to free those house elves who were most badly treated. The war with Grindelwald had intervened and Rosta had fought alongside some of the greatest wizards of that age to defeat the dark man. Yet Rosta was only mentioned in the most obscure history books, and only as a funny anecdote.
Studdy vowed that Dobby’s fate would be different. And perhaps Studdy could help. If he also did something great, perhaps the humans would realise that elves could do more than fetch and carry and clean; and maybe they would remember that Studdy was related to Dobby and understand that the family was a great one. As it was, as Studdy, like Dobby, could trace his lineage all the way back to Rosta, and even earlier. But first Studdy had to find a way to defy his master. And that began by obeying him.
Studdy did as his master ordered, drinking a strange tasting potion before he disapparated. It didn’t seem to cause him any harm, just made his skin tingle and feel a little tight.
The trip to Hogwarts was completed in moments.
The elf swayed a little as he surveyed the grounds in which he stood. Frankly he was surprised that he had been able to surpass the wards, but supposed that elves would need to be able to freely pass through them when they left to fetch food or other items needed by the students or teachers. After all, elves were no threat. Still, he felt a little queasy. Or was that just a side effect of the potion?
Stumbling a little, Studdy walked up to the main door, and scoured the walls next to the massive pieces of wood. His eyes, accustomed to spotting elvish trails, saw at once the clear sign of an arrow pointing to the entrance the beings were expected to use.
He began walking along the outside of the castle, following the faint line that human eyes just didn’t seem capable of seeing. At last he reached a small door hidden behind a dead elderberry bush. He pushed the brittle branches aside and nudged the door open.
Inside was a set of stairs curling down. They were clearly designed for elves as no human could have managed to get down them, even crawling. He followed the steps down and found himself suddenly in the busiest, noisiest place he had ever been.
He was in the kitchens for Hogwarts.
All around elves in neat pillowcases, stamped with the Hogwarts crest, worked. None of them seemed over worked, and each looked happy, clean, and well fed.
Studdy glanced down at his own dirty and ragged pillowcase and felt ashamed. His own hands were blackened from his daily task of cleaning the many fireplaces at the manor, and he stared down at his spindly legs, so lacking in extra muscle and fat, unlike these elves who were evidently well cared for. One even picked a grape off a bunch intended to go up to the humans, and no one commented on it.
He didn’t belong in this splendid place, not here, where Dobby had worked.
Backing into the shadows, Studdy felt tears trickle out of his eyes and roll down his thin dirty cheeks. He would never fit in here. His dreams of defeating the Malfoys and fleeing for freedom to Hogwarts dissolved in that moment. He gulped, a sob trying to work its way out of his chest. Angrily he swiped at his eyes. Perhaps he could never be free, but he could still defy the Malfoy family.
He would find a way to do so.
He would.
