Chapter 4

Love of a Phoenix

Chapter 4

The next morning Severus sat at the staff table eating breakfast. All night his dreams revolved around Hermione Granger and what she had told and showed him the night before. The fact that she actually loved him, still baffled him.

‘I need to talk to Albus later. She needs to hone her abilities or they will destroy her. I can’t and won’t let that happen. Never.’ He thought.

His mind a bit confused by the sudden urge to protect her and well…just to be around her. He got to his feet and headed for his office. As he left, he saw Hermione talking with her friends. Their eyes locked for a moment, and she smiled gently at him. He nodded back and left the Great Hall.

When he reached his office, he found an owl waiting for him. He stiffened immediately as he recognized the owl as Voldemort’s. He approached the animal and removed the letter. The owl took off the second the letter was removed. With stiff fingers, Severus opened the letter.

Severus,

It has come to my attention that you have taken the mudblood, Hermione Granger, as your assistant. I think she could be a great asset to us. Not only in our cause, but in getting my hands on Potter and Dumbledore.

You are to bring her to me. Friday night at 9 sharp. I want to meet her. Perhaps she can be turned. Do not fail me Severus.

Lord Voldemort

Severus began shaking in fury. He knew what would happen if Voldemort got his hands on Hermione. Once he had what he needed from her, she would become a plaything for the other Death Eaters. He spun on his heel and rushed to Albus’s office. He entered the office ten minutes later to find both Albus and Minerva there talking. He showed them the letter.

“Oh no. You can’t take her to him Severus.” Minerva said.

“If I don’t he’ll just send someone to kidnap her. Probably use the Slytherins to do it, then kill me for disobeying him.” Severus growled.

“Severus, am I correct in assuming you’ve discovered whatever it is Hermione is hiding?” Albus asked.

“Yes. Albus, she’s a Phoenix. A living breathing human Phoenix.” Severus sighed.

Albus and Minerva froze. They looked at Severus, each other, back at Severus, then back at each other in shock. After what seemed like an eternity, Albus spoke again.

“No wonder she was afraid to tell anyone. Let me guess, she thinks I’ll see her as nothing more than an experiment?” Albus said.

“This whole all knowing game of yours is getting old Albus.” Severus sighed.

Albus chuckled. “Can she control her abilities?” He asked.

“No. For whatever reason, her mother believed it best to wait till she turned sixteen. She also told me that most of the Phoenix’s in her family have turned dark, only a handful have remained light.” Severus answered as he got to his feet and began pacing.

“There’s more my boy. What?” Albus replied.

“She told me that she loved me. That’s how I knew there was something different about her. She said my soul was feeling hers.” Severus answered.

“Well, that explains your need to protect her. Severus, I want you to think hard about this before you answer me. Before she told you what she was and how she felt about you, did you ever feel as if you and she belonged together? That you had to be near her, protect her?” Albus asked.

Severus stopped pacing. He thought back on the past six years and what he felt whenever he was around her. Sure at first he thought her annoying, but that quickly changed. He never even noticed how he would be sitting at the staff table and just watched her as she ate and talked with her friends. How he couldn’t wait to see her in class or even in the hallways. He had also felt very protective over her. Especially in recent years.

“Yes. How is it, I never noticed until now. After she told me how she felt and when you asked?” Severus answered.

“That’s the beauty of being loved by a Phoenix. Until the Phoenix admits their love, the person it is centered on won’t know. That’s what protects them.” Albus answered.

“How do you know all of this Albus?” Minerva questioned.

“Hermione isn’t the only Phoenix in Hogwarts. Our own Aurora Sinstra is one herself. Severus, I want you to arrange a meeting with Hermione tonight. I will bring Aurora and perhaps Aurora can help Hermione through this.” Albus instructed.

“She’s coming to my lab tonight at eight. You and Aurora can meet us there. Hermione might feel more comfortable there.” Severus suggested.

“Very well. I will tell Aurora and we will meet you there.” Albus said.

Severus nodded and left the office. Minerva turned and faced Albus.

“But what about Voldemort?” She asked.

“I don’t know Minerva. I just don’t know.” Albus sighed.

Hermione sat in Minerva’s classroom. Her mind however, wasn’t on Transfiguration. She was just glad the spell they were working on, she had mastered last year, and she could now do it using wandless magic. Her mind was on the note Severus had slipped into her bag during potions earlier that day.

Hermione,

I spoke with Albus and he has an idea. Tonight, he will be meeting us in the classroom. Come a little early if you wish and we can talk some more. Until tonight.

Severus

Hermione was a bit nervous about meeting with Albus. She only hoped that Severus was right and Albus could help her. She could feel the Phoenix within her burning. She closed her eyes tightly, trying with all her might to control it.

‘I won’t lose control. I can’t lose control. Not now.’ She thought desperately.

With a sigh of relief, she felt the Phoenix slowly quiet down and finally fade somewhat. She was now back in control. She turned her attention back to McGonagall’s lecture. Hoping that after tonight, she would feel more at ease.
