A Thoughtful Gesture
George and Hermione left the castle and were walking around the grounds. George suddenly grabbed her hand and dragged her down to the lake.
George said, “Can you please close your eyes?”
Hermione replied, “What’s this all about George, and why do I have to close my eyes? Is this one of your silly tricks?”
George laughed and answered, “No Hermione it’s no trick, just a surprise, so please close your eyes.”
Hermione reluctantly closed her eyes and heard George mutter a spell under his breath. George had summoned a blanket and a picnic basket. He opened the blanket and put it next to the lake. He turned to Hermione who still had her eyes closed and said, “It’s okay you can open your eyes now.”
Hermione opened her eyes and saw the picnic in front of her. It was a thoughtful gesture because she had been studying through dinner and was actually quite hungry. She sat down and was about to open her mouth with some questions when George interrupted and said, “I saw you never came to dinner and I thought you may want to eat something.”
Hermione looked surprised and said, “That’s very thoughtful of you George. You know you don’t have to look after me because your parents told you to. I would have been fine.”
George laughed and replied, “Hermione, you of all people should know by now that I never listen to what my parents or anyone tells me to do. I do things because I want to do them. Are you surprised that someone should want to do something for you?”
Hermione thought about this and wanted to say no, but upon reflection decided that yes, she was not used to someone wanting to do something for her. This confused her because she wasn’t used to attention from the opposite sex, unless you counted Viktor Krum in her previous year. But Viktor had as much personality as a flobberworm and she was not really all that attracted to him. He had tried to kiss her once, but she let him kiss her cheek.
Hermione looked at her companion, really looked at him; not as Ron’s Brother or as Mr. and Mrs. Weasley’s son, and was intrigued by what she saw. George was tall and well toned from his position as a beater on the Gryffindor quidditch team. He of course had the Weasley red hair, but had beautiful blue eyes that were always twinkling in mischief. Hermione realized that George was a very attractive man.
George was observing Hermione and watched her analyzing what he said. He also saw her checking him out. This gave him a glimmer of hope that there may be a chance for the two of them.
Hermione finally interrupted the silence and asked, “Why are you spending time with me?”
George put his hand under her chin so that she could look directly into her eyes and said, “Because you are beautiful, because you deserve to be noticed, and because I like you.”
Hermione took in what he said and saw the intense gaze of his eyes. She knew he was being serious, but she was confused. Had she just not noticed because of her crush on Ron, and what would Ron say about all this? Would he even card? Did she still want him to care? Hermione finally decided that she just wanted to see where this was all going.
She smiled up at him innocently and replied, “I like you too. I never realized it before but I would like to spend some more time with you.”
George relaxed, and let out the breath he had not realized he had been holding. He smiled at Hermione again and said, “I would like that.”
The two of them spent another hour eating and talking and enjoying each other’s company. They finally headed back up to the Gryffindor common room to avoid being out after curfew.
Before they entered the portrait, George dropped Hermione’s hand that he was holding, and turned her toward him. He gently grazed over her lips just barely touching his to hers.
Hermione was disappointed when he pulled away. She had hoped to get her first real kiss, but George said, “There will be a perfect moment for that. Do not be disappointed; I want our first kiss to be everything you always imagined. You deserve that.”
Hermione could not believe how much of a gentleman George was. She could fall fast for someone like him. She had never seen him the entire time she knew him, but here he was, perfect, and he saw her, truly saw her.
They both climbed in the portrait hole, smiling and conversing naturally, and joined their friends.
