A Traitor Among Us
CHAPTER FOUR
A Traitor among us
Ron, Hermione and Harry spent the week trying to bear the burden of having the Malfoy family amongst them. A few times, Ron and Harry would catch Draco around the garden looking at the ground.
“It is Draco, isn’t it?” Hermione had told them. “No more than usual from him.” She shrugged, and turned back to what she was doing. Harry seemed troubled by this action, however.
“Draco Malfoy looking at plants and flowers? No, mate. There is something wrong about it. He harasses us any chance he can get, and he is looking at garden…” Harry drifted the sentence, as Narcissa walked in that very moment.
“Potter. Weasley. Has your mother gotten the breakfast done yet?” She said, looking very uptight and prim as she spoke.
“She is not your servant. You have arms, I suppose?” Harry said. She looked as if she had gotten slapped hard in the face. She pulled her face into a cool expression, and then smiled.
“Potter, you haven’t got an idea of what I have. You think the Dark Lord won’t find you? The most powerful wizard won’t find a mere adolescent?” She laughed loudly, making Hermione look around in alarm. “You, Potter, are first on his list.” With that, she stomped away, the smile still playing on her face.
“What a bitch.” Ron mumbled so Hermione would not hear. Harry had her words tumbling inside his head. First on his list…..mere adolescent…..find him…
The next morning, Harry, Ron and Hermione were seated at the table for breakfast. Mrs. Weasley and family were gathered as well, as Ron’s dad got a small favor from Mafalda Hopkirk for straightening out the venus fly trap plant that tried to eat her, and had the week off.
The Malfoys never ate with the rest of them, they usually had their food brought elsewhere from the new elf, so it was no shock as to why they were not there today. Mrs. Weasley spread the table with delicious food, and they had just settled to eat, when a loud BANG! Issued from the garden.
Mr. Weasley knew immediately what that bang meant. He jumped to his feet and ran to the kitchen door. A puff of smoke filled the window in front of the sink.
“Molly! The wards are down! Someone is coming! Get everyone upstairs NOW!” Mr. Weasley roared, pulling out his wand and backing away from the door.
“But Arth….” Mrs. Weasley started, pushing Harry, Hermione, Ron, Fred and George and Ginny through the open kitchen door into the hall.
“Go, Molly. Upstairs! Lock the door.” He said, still backing away from the garden door.
Mrs. Weasley had no sooner ushered them all running through the hall, then a loud CRACK! Came from the kitchen. Still running, the seven of them ran up the stairs and into the upper hallway. A thumping from downstairs, and then:
“Molly, its death eaters! Knott and Carrow! They broke the wards!” He sounded, his footsteps pounding up the staircase now.
As they all rounded the hallway, heading to the attic, Lucius stepped out from a doorway and into the way of the herd running. The smile placed on his face told only the true intentions of him wanting to stay under the burrow roof.
“Ah, I see my guests have arrived…Did you not think I’d be loyal enough for the dark lord? He trusts me, you see. I deliver Potter, and I am lead Death eater. A nice deal, huh?” He smiled a viscious smile. A sudden movement, told them Draco was in back of them, blocking them.
With a quick move, Draco had grabbed Hermione, holding her much as his father had done in Diagon Alley.
“My, my. What have we here? A mud blood sacrifice?” He said, eyeing Draco and Hermione. The sounding of footsteps echoed. The death eaters were near. Ron looked at Hermione, and knew he had to do something. Harry was in front and Ron knew Lucuis would catch him if he tried to use his wand.
Ron pulled his wand from his jeans pocket slowly. Looking at his family, he knew he had to get it right the first time. As the footsteps came closer, Ron wheeled around and pointed his wand straight into Draco’s face.
“ Levicorpus!” Ron roared. Draco flew back a few feet, smashing into a glass vase. Hermione ran behind Ron. Ron looked around and saw his dad fighting with Lucius over his wand. Harry seized the opportunity. He whipped his wand out and screamed, “Stupefy!” Harry hit Malfoy square in the chest. He, like Draco, flew back and hit the doorframe with a CRUNCH!
“Come on, they are still coming!” Hermione said Hurrying forward, Ginny at the end of the line. Suddenly, a green light flew at them from every angle. They all dove in different directions. Harry peered behind him to look at where the spells were coming from. Ginny ran down the hall a little way to the next door.
Harry watched as she lurched forward as if diving into the doorway. Without warning, she slumped down in the hall, and laid motionless.
The breath left Harry, and he slumped to his knees over to her, where he looked down and saw Carrow smiling.
“Direct hit, Knott!” She said, laughing. Harry heard the pops of disapparating, and knew he had to get out of here to. Grasping Ginny’s lifeless body, he was spun into darkness. He did not know how to apparate, and he knew it was illegal, but he did not care. He had Ginny. But she was gone…..
