Bad Luck

Hermione sighed, she felt terrible. Ron was mad at her and now he was mad at Erika too. Stupid guy. She had heard about the commotion earlier and knew far too well that Erika would’ve given him a piece of her mind. Erika wouldn’t tell her what happened but she assumed that the two lost their temper and knowing Ron he would’ve said something hurtful that he didn’t really mean.

She heard Erika groan beside her and she turned to look at her friend. “What’s the matter?”

“It’s only the first day of school and already I feel as if it’s the middle of the school year. I’m already dead tired Hermione.”

“That’s because you haven’t slept well for two nights already. I apologize.”

Erika gave her a quizzical look. “Why are you apologizing?

“You didn’t get a good night’s sleep last night because of me.”

Her friend gave her a warm smile, “You’re my friend Hermione. I couldn’t just leave you there on your own.”

She returned the smile, “Thanks.”

“So how long do you reckon Ron’s going to be stubborn?”

Hermione was about to answer when she saw Professor Snape with Malfoy behind him enter the room. She caught Malfoy glancing at their direction as he made his way to his seat beside Zabini. Malfoy smirked when he caught her staring at him and she quickly turned her attention to Professor Snape.

“Pairing assignments for this year. Granger, Zabini. Malfoy, Night. Parkinson, Potter. Weasley, Brown…”

Her eyes grew big when she heard the pairings. Erika also looked at her in disbelief.

“This is not happening,” she heard Erika mutter under her breath.

Hermione raised her hand once Snape finished giving the pairings for the seat assignment.

“Yes Ms. Granger?” Snape impatiently acknowledged.

“Sir, could you maybe pair up Ms. Night and I?”

“Who is the Professor in this class Ms. Granger?”

“You sir.”

“Yes, I am. Now get on with your proper seats so we can start.” Snape thundered and the entire class scrambled to their new seating positions.

Hermione sat beside Blaise as she wondered what Malfoy was plotting. Did he ask Snape to do this? No, Snape wouldn’t listen to him. But what if he did? The two did have a history. What did Malfoy plan to accomplish? Worriedly she turned to look back at Erika who was sitting as far apart as she can from Malfoy and staring straight at the front.

“Ms. Granger, do you find anything fascinating at the back?” Snape’s voice snapped her back from reality and she returned her attention to the front.

“Nothing sir.”

“Maybe she wants to swap seats with Night sir. I heard that she fancies Draco.” Pansy threw in as she ignored the dirty looks that Harry and Erika gave her.

Hermione’s face turned crimson from embarrassment and she quickly looked at Ron who merely chose not to look at her.

“Did I ask for your opinion Ms. Parkinson?” Snape asked with a sneer.

Pansy shook her head as she reddened.

“Then I suggest never to give an unsolicited opinion next time.”

“So you admit that you were checking me out at Transfiguration,” Malfoy smugly stated as he stared at Erika who was sitting as far away as she can from him.

She raised an eyebrow and shook her head, “Your arrogance never ceases to amaze me.”

“You find me amazing? I think I’m pretty amazing too.”

“Well, sorry to disappoint you. On second thought, I’m not sorry to disappoint you. Anyway, I wasn’t checking you out, as you put it, at Transfiguration.”

“Then why didn’t you tell Pansy that?”

“Like she’ll buy that? Anyway, just make sure to keep your psycho girlfriend on a leash. I don’t want to keep deducting points from our own house just because of her.”

“First off, Pansy’s not my girlfriend. Next, she’s not a psycho, she’s just obsessed with me and last, just ignore her and stop deducting points from our house.”

Erika laughed out loud causing Snape to look suspiciously at their direction.

“Is there something funny Miss Night?”

She shook her head, “No sir, I apologize for interrupting your class.”

Snape gave her a look of disapproval before resuming his lecture.

Erika glanced at Malfoy who was smirking at her. “I forgot, what did you tell Hermione? Ah yes, Malfoys’ don’t have girlfriends. I beg to differ about Pansy’s mental state, she is a psycho. And I will deduct points even in our own house when I see that it is fit.” She returned her attention to the lecture and ignored Malfoy for the entire remaining period.

Harry took a step beside her just as soon as Potions was finished. “You alright?” he asked his friend worriedly.

Erika groaned and shook her head, “It’s just the start of the term and already I’m having bad luck.”

Malfoy gave her a dirty look when her eyes rested on him as he walked by and she gave off a sigh when she returned her attention to her friend.

“Is there any way I can cheer you up?”

She smiled, “You know what you can do to cheer me up.”

Harry nodded, “It’s settled then, Quidditch on Saturday afternoon.

Erika clapped her hands in delight, “Thanks four-eyes. I just wish Fred and George can play too.”

“I’ll try to remedy that.” He chuckled when her eyes grew wide in excitement. “Anything else you want to request?” They started walking to the Great Hall for lunch and he couldn’t help but smile as he watched Erika bounce up and down on the balls of her feet as she tried to hide her growing excitement for the approaching Saturday.

“Actually, yes I have another request. Can you make Ron and Hermione friends again?”

He shook his head, “Erika, I can only do so much.”

She pouted, “And here I thought you can do anything.”

He laughed when Erika took a step away from him to avoid being tickled at her waist. “Quit messing and go to your table so you can eat and I mean decently.”

Erika gave him a salute, “Yes sir,” before heading to the Slytherin table.
