Magic and Mayhem

Author’s Notes:

*Chapter 3, (or four depending on how you look at it), fresh off the press and ready for your consumption.

*So I will tell you now that the pacing in the beginning is really slow. I have tried to avoid it, but I just can’t seem to get past it.

* So far I have to say that I am really happy with the feedback I’ve gotten. It has been both encouraging and constructive. You guys really help me keep track and even develop this story. So props to you guys. Any suggestions/questions/comments feel free to review. But if you aren’t inclined don’t worry, I promise I wont withhold any chappies.

Replies to Reviewers:

* LunaSnape- Hey, just that anyone takes the time to review is good enough for me. I love it when people do. I am happy enough to know that 80+ have actually taken the time to read this story. I didn’t think I would get that many. Thank you for being one of the non-lazy one’s!

Here is another chapter for you and I hope you continue to enjoy this little story of mine.

Without further ado:

Chapter 3: Magic and Mayhem

There was something unbelievably wrong about this train. For one thing there was no dining car, and the trolley carried only two type of food. One was pumpkin based edibles and the other was candy. Maddie would have been more than willing to chalk that up to international cuisine except for the fact that she’d already been in the UK for two weeks and had thus far never encountered pumpkin juice or chocolate frogs.

Then there was that Remus character, who had looked into her car no less than three time since their awkward conversation. Maddie had smiled and waved every time she saw him, but inside a strange fear had begun to take root. In Maddie’s opinion such behavior went far beyond the realm of incredible politeness. At this point it was just plain weird, and to be honest smacked of ‘psycho serial-axe murderer’.

And she couldn’t even begin to understand these kids with their sticks. On a trip to the restroom she saw no less than three kids waving the damned things around. Two were in the bathroom itself, two girls waving them at their faces and giggling into the mirror. The third she saw was an older boy flipping his stick at another’s boys shoes. They two were giggling. To Maddie’s thinking the whole lot of them were loony.

So it was to Maddie’s great relief that the train came to a bumpy halt more than an hour later. She sat resigned to wait for the wave of whacko kids to depart before she even attempted to de-board. She had gotten tossed around far to often today at the station. Why willingly subject herself to such an uncomfortable, aggravating event again?

‘I can’t stand kids,’ Maddie thought as she watched their little, happy faces race by from her door window. ‘No matter how cute they are they’re always trouble…just like men. I hate men too. God I am grumpy.’

After several minutes of watching and thinking the flow of boisterous little humans trickled down to a stop. Maddie stood and reached up for her suitcase pulling as hard as she could to unstuck the buckle stuck on the lip of the shelf.

“May I be of some assistance?” A voice said from beside her.

Maddie’s muscles tightened in fright causing a sudden jerking action that freed her stuck case. Both lady and luggage were propelled backwards, Maddie landing on the bench and her luggage landing on her face. A bright shock of pain burst from the area of her lips, doubling Maddie over in it’s unexpected severity.

“Oh dear, I am so sorry! I didn’t mean to frighten you.” Remus squatted down beside her lifting her face up to the light. Her lip was beginning to swell, but at least it wasn’t busted.

“I’m fine,” An annoyed look flashed across Maddie’s face as she saw who the mysterious voice belonged to.

“Are you sure, it does look to be incredibly painful.”

“Yes I am perfectly fine.” Maddie replied, scooping her suitcase from the floor. “Now I don’t mean to be rude but I am in a bit of…a…hurry.” Maddie stopped as she rose to find herself at eye-level with another stick. This time yielded by a full grown man.

“Terribly sorry about this.” Remus whispered, and it was the last thing Maddie saw or heard.

“She’s waking up, Headmaster.”

The voice reached Maddie as the levels of darkness began to slide away from her consciousness. Something in the back of her foggy mind told her that she knew that voice from somewhere.

“So she is, Remus.” She didn’t know that voice. But she recognized the name.

‘Remus…Remus…’ her name replayed the name over and over again trying to make it fit. And then all of a sudden it did. ‘Remus, train, stick…nothing.’

“Oh my God” were the first words out of Maddie’s mouth as she bolted upright suddenly, startling the two men that stood over her. They stared at her, and she stared at them, and silence reigned for all of two seconds before all hell broke loose.

Maddie’s fight or flight instinct kicked in, and she was ready to do both. There was no way some old guy and skinny ass hobo were going to get the better of her. Sticks or no sticks. So she grabbed the first thing that met her hand and propelled it at their startled faces. A spray of hard candies showered them all followed by a soft thud and Remus was down. Maddie didn’t stop to gloat over her small victory but instead hefted herself from the coach and ran for the circular staircase to her left.

She could hear Remus regaining his feet and the terrifying sounds of two men thundering after her. Fear pushed her on, taking two steps at a time she finally reached the top. Throwing herself at the first door she found she crashed into the room, stopping suddenly when she saw the bed.

To late she remembered her pursuers and turned just in time to see Remus hurling himself at her. Both he and Maddie tumbled to the ground in a confusing array of arms, legs, and teeth. His large frame slamming her to the ground knocked the breathe from Maddie’s lungs, but she refused to stop. She scratched, kicked, and bit in a last ditch attempt for freedom. Her heart racing, her vision tunneling, the noise overpowering in it’s intensity. To her side she heard a booming voice, saw from the corner of her wide eyes a flash of light, and then everything just stopped.

She couldn’t move, not even to blink her eyes. She knew instinctively that she could breathe, she couldn’t feel the rise and fall of her chest. But neither was she incapable if drawing in a breathe. She could hear her heart drumming in her ears, but she couldn’t feel the overworked muscle slamming into her ribs. She could move her eyes, but she couldn’t close her jaw. Which was a shame for her mouth was currently wrapped around the side of Remus’ hand. The man himself tugging gently to remove it from said cavity.

Finally free, Remus disengaged himself from her body, his hand coming to his face to cradle his broken lip. ‘Good Bitch,’ Maddie thought snidely. ‘I hope it hurts!’

Albus Dumbledore had never in his life seen such a small woman fight with such force. He looked to Remus with concern, the younger man doubled over, heaving in great breathes, blood leaking from his mouth.

“Go take care of yourself Remus,” Albus advised turning back to the woman still frozen on his bedroom floor. “I’ve got things well in hand now.”

“If you’re sure headmaster…”

“Quite. Miss Lindsey and I are just going to have a quiet talk now.” Remus nodded and turned to leave the room but was stopped by Albus. “When you’re done please send for Severus. We may have need of his expertise.” A troubled look crossed Remus’ face but he didn’t disagree, simply nodded again and left the room.

“Now, Miss Lindsey, I am going to release you.” Albus began, a stern, somewhat angry tone replacing the every kind quality of his voice. “You will not scream, nor fight, nor run. I do not seek to cause you harm. I simply want to ask you some very important questions. In return I am more than willing to answer all of your questions.”

Albus rose and slowly backed away from the supine figure on his floor. Drawing in a deep breathe he waved his hand and released Maddie from the spell. He watched her carefully as her mouth closed and her limbs slowly lowered to the ground. She lay there for a second, staring at the ceiling before cautiously standing and facing him. Both beings were suspicious, both of there muscles tensed in anticipation for whatever the other might do. When neither person made a move to either run or subdue, each relaxed.

“I want a weapon,” she whispered softly.

“I beg your pardon?”

“I want a weapon, something to defend myself with.”

“You want me to knowingly, willingly supply you with an instrument that could cause me bodily harm?” Albus asked incredulously.

“Yes. The way I see it if you’re telling me the truth then you have nothing to worry about.” Maddie head raised defiantly, her eye brow raised in distaste. “You don’t try and hurt me and I wont have to kill you.”

“And you will make no move against me should I arm you?”

“Not unless you strike first.”

‘Smart girl,’ Albus thought. “Very well. If I may?” He asked using his arm to indicate the cane by the door. She looked at the stick then back to him and nodded and turned to retrieve the makeshift weapon, stopping suddenly when she noticed the small mirror affixed to the bottom. She rose her eyes questioningly to him.

Albus chuckled, “A gift from an old friend. It is meant to be funny.”

“Uh-huh,” was the only response he got. But it didn’t matter the twinkle was back in his eyes. He thought he might just get through this whole ordeal far more intact than Remus.

“Shall we?” He asked nodding towards the stairs.

Severus Snape was just settling in to his seat in the great hall when a battered Remus Lupin approached him. He didn’t even attempt to hide the pleased smirk as he took in the werewolf’s appearance. His black eye’s flashed with annoyed amusement.

“Lupin, whatever happened to you face? It looks as though you’ve gotten into another scuffle with a hippogriff.”

“The Headmaster request your presence in his study.” Remus began ignoring the potions master’s baiting comment.

Snape suddenly became serious. To be called away when the sorting ceremony was about to start spoke of the severity of the situation. Whatever it was. Rising, he eyed the Gryffindor mongrel one last time before departing with all haste to the Headmasters office. Pausing only to mutter the disgusting password, ‘Mmmm-Mmmm Good’, and riding the rising stairs.

Walking into the office Severus was amazed by what he saw. A small blond was standing on the headmaster desk waving some sort of large stick around screaming at the top of her lungs.

“You’re fucking crazy is what you are! Wizard my ass!”

Kay, so I have to admit, not my favorite chapter. Just didn’t flow like I wanted it to. So don’t be to surprised if I chose to revise it in the future.
