THREE: Unexpected Results

Three: Unexpected Results

“Do you want the good news, or the bad news?” Severus asked, looking at a very long piece of parchment.

“Good – we haven’t had any good news on this case in nine months.” He said, realising their company’s reputation was on the line.

“I have calculated the possible magical signature changes.” Severus looked incredibly proud.

“Wonderful! Brilliant!” Lucius grinned, drinking his coffee.

“What’s the bad news?” Draco asked, he’d spent the morning interviewing Lovegood again, and was close to loosing the will to live after hearing about this seven-foot-tall God.

“There are seven-thousand-two-hundred-and-thirty-seven different viable magical signature possibilities.” He said, shaking his head and sitting down.

“You did the calculation that many times?” Draco asked, impressed.

“No, I did it four times then used a spelled quill to work out the rest based on mine.”

“However you did it – we now have to trace each and every signature – and some of them are probably going to exist in other people that aren’t her.” Lucius said, rubbing his eyes as he unfolded the world map and brought out the crystal on a platinum chain.

“Another positive result.” Severus said, five hours later, “That gives us twenty-nine possible locations all over the bloody planet!”

“There are still Seven thousand to go!” Lucius said, taking an Exhausted Draco’s place as he began to scry for the missing witch.

“It is going to cost a fortune for those international portkeys to visit each location.” Severus said, estimating the current fees.

“Well it’s a good job Weasley and Potter are loaded, isn’t it?” Draco yawned.

“Another one.” Lucius said, coming from the locating trance to find the crystal hovering over Hungary, then moving towards…

“Transylvania? What the heck’s in Transylvania?” Lucius said, puzzled.

“Not much now the vampires are extinct.” Severus said.

“What happened to them?” Draco asked.

“They stopped feeding – they stopped hunting the local magic folk and muggles.” Severus said, trying to remember what he knew.

“No blood, no vampire.” Lucius clarified.

“When did this happen?” Draco said, moving to the board.

“About a decade ago…” Severus said.

“About the same time Miss Granger vanished…” Lucius said, summoning relevant newspapers from the time.

“Do you think her strange apathy for helping magical creatures drew her to them?” Draco said.

“Or was she kidnapped by them and turned?” Severus said, contemplating the changed magical signature.

And survived them becoming extinct?” Draco said.

“It’s the only lead we have.” Severus said, sighing.

“We’re going to have to apply for an international portkey.” Lucius said, “Pack for Transylvania.” He said, writing a letter to Potter and Weasley to tell them the development.
