Lies

He had lied. Not that it was a new thing for Draco, but it was who he had lied to that was eating him inside. How could I lie to Ali, about her mother for Merlin's sake? I told her that Ginny was coming. How could I say such a thing? True he'd thought about inviting her to the festivities, but he couldn't go through with it. It had been ten years, surely she would be moved on with a family of her own. He didn't think he could bear to see her smiling face. He didn't want to shatter whatever happiness she'd found. And yet, he owed it to Alissa. He'd said he'd invited the woman she'd been longing to meet since he adopted her from the orphanage. He owed it to her to put aside his fears and at least invite Ginny. He couldn't promise his ex-lover would show up, but by inviting her at least he wouldn't have lied to Ali.

Moving things areound on his desk, he grabbed an unused invitation and a pen, unsure of what to say. How do you go about it, inviting somebody you loved fully, abandoned while carrying your child, and hadn't seen in nearly a decade? It was one of those delicate situations, but Draco who could talk his way into or out of anything, was at a loss for words. Everything that ran through his head sounded like crap. Everytime his pen touched the paper his mouth would get dry and his mind would go blank. The only thing he could see was an image of her smiling by the lake in the moonlight. Her hair shiny as newly minted copper pieces. Her eyes were sparkling, the color of honey with what seemed like a diamond dust coating. It had been just moments after he'd given her the ring, promised to be there forever and to love her for all eternity. That was the way her remembered her, always in that moment, always so happy.

"I lied. I wasn't always there. I'm so sorry, Gin, I never meant for this to happen," Draco spoke to the empty study his voice full of sadness. He then knew what he had to do. Taking his pen in hand, he pulled the invitation close, as well as an extra bit of parchment. He wasn't sure what he would write, but he did know that none of it would be a lie. He couldn't bear to cause Ginny to shed tears again.
