Truth be Told

Harry waited impatiently for Ginny to arrive. She had flooed him yesterday and told him to be ready at six o’clock. He wondered where she was planning on taking him. He was trying to keep his mind away from the fact that this was the time each week when Draco met his lover.

He hoped that Ginny would distract him from that. She arrived a few minutes after the hour and Harry climbed into her car. When she had turned 18, she had become fascinated with all things Muggle and that had included their vehicles. She had gotten her license and drove her little blue sports car everywhere. Of course it had only the best wizard modifications.

“Where are we going?” he asked when he got into the car. Ginny smiled at him warily. She knew that he would be angry when he found out their destination until he discovered the truth so she didn’t tell him. She drove through the streets until Harry started to recognize the area. He glared at Ginny.

“Harry.” She said warningly. “There is something you need to know and I know you. You won’t believe it until you see it. Trust me.” She implored. He growled an indecipherable reply and turned his gaze out the window.

Of course he would recognize the area. He had followed Draco here for weeks, watching him go up to a little house with a white picket fence. Ginny parked her car around the corner. Harry gave her a confused look. He had thought they had been going to confront Draco’s other man. She smiled at him.

“We are going to spy. You didn’t get to do that enough during the war.” She teased. He frowned.

“I didn’t have to. I could get all my information from the source.” He said talking about the visions he had gotten from Voldemort. Towards the end, it seemed as if Voldemort wasn’t even trying to block Harry from his mind. Harry was quite sure that Voldemort had been so gone in his insanity that he hadn’t even realized Harry had been there.

Ginny grabbed Harry’s arm, bringing him out of his memories and dragged him into an alleyway. When they were out of sight, she changed the color of their clothes to black. She answered his unspoken question with a cheeky smile when he raised a questioning brow. Harry rolled his eyes and turned his focus on the ‘spy game’ that Ginny wanted to play. If he tried hard enough maybe he could pretend it wasn’t Draco’s rendezvous they were going to observe.

Ginny led him through the alley and into someone’s back yard. There was a small garden and the lawn was manicured nicely. Harry thought sourly that it probably matched the perfect front yard with the picket fence. Ginny peeked in several windows until she found what she was looking for and then waved Harry over. He moved next to her and peeked in the window.

Draco was sitting in a plush chair across from an older man, who held a notebook. There was a table between them and Harry was startled to see a piece of parchment and a quill on it. The quill was writing down everything that Draco and the other man said. The window was open slightly but Harry couldn’t hear what was said so he pushed it open a little more.

“-Don’t want to talk about him. I can’t.” Draco said in a tired, dejected voice.

“You didn’t tell me why he left. Are you sure you don’t want to talk about it? Remember that if you let it build up in you, it will only fester.” The older man’s voice was mild and soothing.

Harry turned to Ginny with wide eyes. “Draco’s been seeing a therapist, not cheating.” was her whispered explanation. She tried to lead him away but he pulled away from her. He turned back to the window where Draco was talking again.

“I can’t let him think I’m weak because then he won’t have anyone to lean on. He needs me but he will pull away if he thinks that it’s too much for me. Nothing he goes through is too much for me to be there for him.” Draco was saying. He stood and began to pace, running his hands through his hair as he always did when he was agitated.

“So you would rather he think you were cheating?” the doctor asked neutrally.

“Yes-No-I don’t know. I want him to trust me. I want to be there when he needs me. You just don’t know Harry. He bottles everything up if he thinks it’s too much for someone else to handle. If he knew that I was having problems with all this, he would clam up and support me. He would never come to me with a problem again. HE would hold it all inside until he exploded.” Draco ranted.

Harry sighed silently. He didn’t know what Draco’s problems were but he knew he was right. If he had thought Draco was having a hard time, he wouldn’t have burdened him with his own problems. His eyes filled with tears. It was such a mess. Draco had lied so that Harry wouldn’t pull away when he had a problem. The whole situation was ridiculous. He decided he would talk to Draco tomorrow and they would figure a way through this. Harry turned to Ginny to tell her that he was ready to go and froze.

Several policemen were standing at the back fence. Ginny was staring at them in surprise. Harry moved to her side and one of the men shouted for him to stop. When Harry reached her, Ginny grabbed his hand and ran, pulling him along. They ran along the side of the house and into the front, only to be facing several more policemen. In just minutes, Harry and Ginny had been arrested.

It seems that one of the neighbors had seen them peeking in the window and had thought they were robbers. She had called the police and they had arrived in minutes to arrest them. If they hadn’t run, they could have explained what they were doing but running implied guilt and they had been arrested. As the car pulled away with them inside, Harry looked up to find a shocked Draco staring at him from the front yard of the house.

Harry and Ginny were only at the police station for about an hour before Hermione arrived to get them. It seemed that Draco had called her and explained the situation. Harry and Ginny were warned not to peek in anymore windows and were sent home. Hermione was amused and exasperated as she drove them to pick up Ginny’s car.

“I swear I thought Severus took a draught of laughing potion by accident again when I got home. He could barely stop laughing enough to tell me what was going on. Draco looked mortified. He was very upset to find you there, Harry.” Hermione told him.

Harry winced and Ginny laughed. “I suppose our spy days are officially over. Especially since it took us only 10 minutes to get caught.” She joked.

“I talked to Ron earlier. He said and I quote, ‘Draco is a stupid bloke for doing that to Harry. I can’t imagine doing that and Harry should stop peeking in windows before the Daily Prophet finds out or at least invite me along.’” the three laughed at Hermione’s spot on impression of Ron but Harry was nervous.

Hermione had let it slip that Draco was waiting at her house to talk to him. He didn’t know what to say. Even if Draco hadn’t cheated, he had still lied. He hadn’t trusted Harry enough to let him help with his problems. He hadn’t trusted Harry to be there for him and that hurt almost as much as being cheated on.

Harry was quiet for the rest of the ride to Hermione’s house. They had dropped Ginny off at her car and she had given Harry a quick kiss on the cheek and wished him luck. He had barely acknowledged her but she understood that he was trying to deal with the issue with Draco. Hermione was quiet on the way home as well. Too quiet Harry decided.

“How long did you know about Draco?” he asked intuitively. She gave him a guilty look.

“A couple of weeks. I tricked the information out of Severus. I couldn’t tell you Harry. This was between you and Draco.” She said a little defensively. He sighed and nodded. He knew she was right but it still hurt. If she had spoken up this whole mess could have been avoided. Of course, hearing it from his best friend instead of his lover might have even made it worse. If it could get worse.

By the time they had arrived at Hermione’s house, Harry’s head was throbbing and he just wanted to go to sleep. Hermione mumbled something and went into the kitchen. Harry saw why when his eyes focused to the different lighting. Draco was standing in the parlor, staring at Harry. He was pale and tired looking. It made Harry want to go to him and comfort him, to make sure he got enough to eat and sleep, in general to mother him but he resisted. Nothing would get solved if he did that.

“Can we talk?” Draco asked softly. Harry nodded and followed him into the library.
