Final Stand

Shadows Fall

Chapter 4: Final Stand

Voldemort stood over Harry Potter’s dead body, finally victorious. The Death Eaters that had been motionless through the whole fight finally became alive with excitement. Hermione could only scream at the lifeless body that now was Harry Potter. “He is the boy who lived no longer,” Voldemort said. Hermione could only continue to stare in horror. This can’t be happening! I’ve lost everyone dear to me, except for Layla. Hermione quickly looked and spotted her friend on the ground, and ran to her unconscious body. “Your all I have left Layla I’ll protect you the best that I can,” Hermione whispered. Lucius finally came too, and not in a very peasant mood. Damn that miserable bitch! She will indeed suffer until her last breath!

Lucius’ thoughts of ways he could torture Layla stopped when he saw his Lord standing over the lifeless body of Harry. He smiled and made his way to his lord. “My Lord congratulations on finally killing the boy,” Lucius said with a polite bow. Lord Voldemort looked at his supposed right hand man. “No thanks to you Lucius, you were beaten by a mere girl. I may as well have her take your place,” he said coldly. Lucius’ faced flushed with angry and embarrassment, had it been anyone else he would have killed them, but because it was his Lord he could only beg for his forgiveness. Voldemort ignored Lucius’ plea for forgiveness and went to the sniveling form of Wormtail. For even though Hermione had lost her concentration since the fight with Dark Lord and Harry, Wormtail was still acting like he was, too afraid to act otherwise. Voldemort looked from Wormtail up back to Lucius, “Why even my spineless servant Wormtail was able to kill that Weasley boy. So tell me Lucius what good are you?”

Lucius’ face flushed once more, “Please forgive me my Lord, but I can assure you that I will not fail you again.” He eyed Hermione and Layla’s unconscious form. “I will make sure that those two suffer the utmost pain for dare going against my Lord. If he but bid me the chance to do so,” Lucius said. Voldemort knew that they would indeed suffer, not only for the embarrassment he knew Lucius felt, but there where two reasons why he was still his right hand man. His knowledge of potions and torture were the two sole reasons why he still was so. Lord Voldemort turned his red eyes away from his servant to look at the two witches. They were quite remarkable witches better than some of his very own Death Eaters, but he would give them that and no more.

“Very well Lucius, you may have your fun. I only give you a first and final warning, do not fail me again, or I can assure you that the consequents will be great indeed.” Lucius bowed his head to his Lord, and then turned and started to walk over towards Hermione. “Since your friend is already indisposed, it would be wise for you to come quietly,” he said. Hermione eyed him with spite, and then looked down at Layla. What should I do? If I attack and fail I’ll leave her all alone in the world, but I know that a life of pain and torture is no life at all. I hope you can forgive me Layla, I’m sure you would do the same. With that final thought Hermione got into a dueling stance. “Not without a fight I won’t,” she said. Lucius face remained plain almost bored. “I’m highly sick of all this heroic drama.” Where his only words before he too drew out his wand.

To Hermione’s surprise Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters all left leaving her and Lucius all alone. Only the lifeless bodies of Ron, and Harry, and Layla’s unconscious form would be witnesses to the fight that was about to ensure. Hermione and Lucius circled each other, daring the other to strike first. Until Lucius decided there was more than magic that could win this battle. “I must admit my dear little mud-blood, you and your friends put up a good fight, foolish, but good,” he said hoping to spark angry within her. His words seemed to have done the trick for it was Hermione that gave the first blow. “Stupefy!” she shouted, but Lucius easily blocked it. “You’re going to have to do better than that,” he said smiling. “Impedimenta!” he shouted, Hermione quickly rolled out of the way and shout back another spell. However the pervious fights were catching up to Hermione for she was starting to feel increasingly tired and drained.

I can’t hold this up for much longer. I’m so sorry Layla. Even though I am the greatest witch of my age, I can’t seem to be able to protect any of the people that I care about. Tears started to form in her eyes, but she quickly blinked them away as she continued to fight on. After being hit by the Colloportus spell, Hermione knelt in pain, while Lucius walked in triumph over to her. “Give up to me now, and I just might spare you life and that of your miserable friend,” he said. Hermione looked at him like he had just grown three heads.Does he honestly think I’m that stupid? Instead she only looked at Lucius in pure hatred. “If you can call a life of endless torture by you a life, I would like to have no part of it,” she said. Lucius stared at her for a moment, and then looked at the stilled body of Layla. “Then you’ll get to die knowing that your friend will not only suffer for herself, but for you as well.”

Lucius smiled when he saw the look of horror appear on Hermione’s face. “You bastard! You’re the lowest of the low!” she shouted. “Hardly my dear mud-blood. That would be my humble Lord. I am merely the servant.” He replied. Hermione had never been so angry in her whole life.He isn’t even a man! Curse him! I have no idea what I should do! Risk it all? Or go quietly and hope to escape later? But then again would we even have the strength to escape? I won’t be able to live like that, but its not just my life that I’m putting on the line, and he knows this very well that bastard! Hermione took a quick glance at her friend, and gave a sad smile, before she slowly got to her feet, showing no sight of fear in her features.

Hermione got into a dueling stance once more and prayed that Layla would forgive her. Lucius smiled, “Clearly you do have spirit. I wonder if Miss Blade does too. Ah wonderful it will be to slowly…” but Hermione won’t allow him to finish. “Reducto!” she shouted, but to her shock Lucius easily blocked and smiled at her. “I am not so easily fooled twice. Farewell Miss Granger.” And without another word Lucius Malfoy performed the killing curse. Hermione Jane Granger could only watch in horror and then died, failing to protect Layla. Leaving her all alone in the rising of the Dark Age.
