Chapter 4: Running Away: Part Two
************************************
Harry had accidentally summon the Knight Bus, after seeing a Grim. He was taken to the Leaky Cauldron, where he was met with the Minister of Magic himself.
He was inform that, Aunt Marge had been taken care of, he was not going to be in trouble for doing magic outside of school ground, but was scowl for leaving in the manner that he did.
As soon as Harry was allowed to rest, all the pain that he didn't feel from the adrenalin pumping through his veins, went out like a candle. Making it hard for Harry to breath.
Using wandless magic Harry started to heal himself, but before that, he took a veil of skele-Gro, that he also made before leaving school. With everything all set, he had taken the potion to emend his broken bones, now the last step. he made sure that he was comfortable on the bed, and with his wandless magic put himself in a magical coma, for when he re woke, he would be healed.
Harry woke up a week later.
*****
It took Harry several days to get used to his strange new freedom. Never before had he been able to get up whenever he wanted, nor eat whatever he fancied. He could even go wherever he pleased, as long as it was in Diagon Alley, and as this long cobbled street was packed with the most fascinating wizarding shops in the world, Harry felt no desire to break his word to Fudge (the Minister of Magic) and stray back into the Muggle world.
Everywhere Harry went there were poster of a wanted escapee from Azkaban, the wizarding prison. Harry had heard snips here and there of people talking about said convict.
Once Harry had refilled his money bag with gold Galleons, silver Sickles, and bronze Knuts from his vault at Gringotts, he had to exercise a lot of self-control not to spend the whole lot at once. He had to keep reminding himself that he had five years to go at Hogwarts, and how it would feel to ask the Dursleys for money for spellbooks, to stop himself from buying a handsome set of solid gold Gobstones (a wizarding game rather like marbles, in which the stones squirt a nasty-smelling liquid into the other player's face when they lose a point). He was sorely tempted, too, by the perfect, moving model of the galaxy in a large glass ball, which would have meant he never had to take another Astronomy lesson. Ah! but the thing that tested Harry's resolution most appeared in his favorite shop, Quality Quidditch Supplies, a week after he'd arrived at the Leaky Cauldron.
Curious to know what the crowd in the shop was staring at, Harry edged his way inside and squeezed in among the excited witches and wizards until he glimpsed a newly erected podium, on which had a magnificent broom, that Harry had ever seen.
"It's the fastest broom in the world, isn't it, Dad?" squeaked a boy younger than Harry, who was swinging off his father's arm.
A large witch in front of Harry moved, and he was able to read the sign next to the broom:
THE FIREBOLT
THIS STATE-OF-THE-ART RACING BROOM SPORTS A STREAMLINE, SUPERFINE HANDLE OF ASH, TREATED WITH A DIAMOND-HARD POLISH AND HAND-NUMBERED WITH ITS OWN REGISTRATION NUMBER. EACH INDIVIDUALLY SELECTED BIRCH TWIG IN THE BROOMTAIL HAS BEEN HONEDTO AERODYNAMIC PERFECTION, GIVING THE FIREBOLT UNSURPASSIBLE BALANCE AND PINPOINT PRECISION. THE FIREBOLT HAS AN ACCELERATION OF 150 MILES AN HOUR IN TEN SECONDS AND INCORPORATES AN UNBREAKABLE BRAKING CHARM. PRICE ON REQUEST.
Price on request...Harry didn't like to think how much gold the Firebolt would cost. He had never wanted anything as much in his whole life--but he had never lost a Quidditch match on his Nimbus Two Thousand, and what was the point in emptying his Gringotts vault for the Firebolt, when he had a very good broom already? As he thought of this, he couldn't help but think of what Draco would say to that.
'Really Harry! with your skills, you could do great thing with a Firebolt. Not to mention that we Slytherin's deserve the best, you more then any.' Harry could even hear the superiority, and finality to this comment. Shaking his head, Harry turned, and headed to the Apothecary to replenish his store of potion ingredients, and as his school robes were now several inches too short in the arm and leg, he visited Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions and bought new ones, as well as every day occasion robes. He was not in the mood to hear Draco bitching and moaning about his gusting over sized wardrobe. Harry figure that at the end of the school year he could ask Draco or better yet, he could ask Ron to hold them for him. After all, after first year, Harry has been going to the Weasley's home after his birthday, till school started.
All that was left was to buy his school books for this year. Harry got a surprise as he looked in at the bookshop window. Instead of the usual display of gold-embossed spellbooks the size of paving slabs, there was a large iron cage behind the glass that held about a hundred copies of The Monster Book of Monsters. Torn pages were flying everywhere as the books grappled with each other, locked together in furious wrestling matches and snapping aggressively.
Pulling out his booklist out of his pocket, he consulted with it for the first time. The Monster book of Monsters was listed as the required book for Care of Magical Creatures. Now Harry understood why Hagrid had said it would come in useful, when he gave him a copy for his birthday. He had been a little worry about the gift, thinking that Hagrid had wanted help with some terrifying new pet. He was relieved this wasn't the case.
"Hogwarts?" said the manager, hurrying over to Harry when he enter the shop.
"Yes," said Harry, "I need--"
"Get out of the way," said the manager impatiently, brushing Harry aside. He drew on a pair of very thick gloves, picked up a large, knobbly walking stick, and proceeded toward the door of the Monster Book's cage.
"Hang on," said Harry quickly, "I've already got one of those."
"Have you?" A look of enormous relief spread over the manager's face. "Thank Heavens for that. I've been bitten five times already this morning--"
A loud ripping noise rent the air; two of the Monster Books had seized a third and were pulling it apart.
"Stop it! Stop it!" cried the manager. poking the walking stick through the bars and knocking the books apart. "I'm never stocking them again, never! It's been bedlam! I thought we'd seen the worst when we bought two hundred copies of the Invisible Book of Invisibility--cost a fortune, and we never found them...Well...is there anything else I can help you with?"
"Yes." said Harry handing over his booklist.
"Ah, I'll have these in a bit." said the manager, walking away to find the needed books.
Harry, mean while started to look around, hoping to find something worth reading for later, that night. He found a book on blood magic, and potion; 'Blood Properties: Magical and Potions'. 'This could be useful, for our potion' he thought. Looking for about twenty minutes, Harry found another book about Animagus; 'Step to Step On Becoming an Animagus'.
'Hmm...Maybe Draco would like to become an Animagus with me--I could try and see with Ron, Fred and George would like to become one as well.' Harry thought. Making his mind, Harry walked up to the counter, to find that the manager had already found all the needed school books on his booklist.
"Would that be all, Mr. Potter" asked the manager.
"Yes, please." said Harry, a bit firmly. Draco had told Harry that if he treated all with softness, they would all try to walk all over him. The way to get people to respect and treat you like an intelligent person, he needed to be a bit more firm when speaking to people, excluding their close friends. Harry found this to be true. So he used it now.
After paying Harry walked out of the store, and went back to the Leaky Cauldron, hardly noticing where he was going and bumping into several people. His mind on the two books he just purchased.
He tramped up the stairs to his room, went inside, and tipped his books onto his bed. Somebody had been in to tidy; the windows were open and sun was pouring inside. Harry could hear the buses rolling by in the unseen Muggle street behind him and the sound of the invisible crowd below in Diagon Alley.
Harry took the only chair in his room a placed it in front of the window. Walking back to the bed, Harry picked up 'Step to Step On Becoming an Animagus'; and return to the chair. He propped his feet on the window sill and began to read from chapter one.
******************
A week later, Harry met up with the Weasley's and spend the day with them, since they were also going to spend the night at the Leaky Cauldron. The next morning Tom, the bartender, woke Harry up with his usual toothless grin and a cup of tea. Harry got dress, he wore jeans that hugged his arse nicely, almost a skin tight black polo shirt, with black dragons boots. For his age, Harry was starting to show that Quidditch was doing wonders to his body. Even though he was a bit too skinny, he was nicely cut. He was just persuading a disgruntled Hedwig to get back into her cage when Ron banged his way onto the room, pulling a sweatshirt over his head and looking irritable.
"The sooner we get on the train, the better," he said. "At least I can get away from Percy at Hogwarts. Now he's accusing me of dripping tea on his photo of Penelope Clearwater. You know," Ron grimaced, "his girlfriend. She's hidden her face under the frame because her nose has gone all blotchy...."
"I've got something to tell you," Harry began, nut they were interrupted by Fred and George, who had looked in to congratulate Ron on infuriating Percy again.
They headed down to breakfast, where Mr. Weasley was reading the front page of the Daily Prophet with a furrowed brow and Mrs. Weasley telling Ginny about a love potion she'd made as a young girl. They were rather giggly.
They finished up with their breakfast quickly and headed to King's Cross, on borrowed Ministry of Magic cars.
The moment Harry passed the barrier to get through platform nine and three-quarters, he was assaulted by a blond boy.
"Harry!" said Draco happily, before being scold by his mother.
"Draco, please compose yourself. Hello darling, How was your summer? Did those muggles do anything to you? If they did, I will have Lucius go over there and give him a piece of my mind...."
"Mother, please" Draco interrupted her. "You're acting very unMalfoy like."
Narcissa looked to be insulted, "How dare ...."
"Narcissa darling, you are making a scene." Lucius said softly but firmly.
"Madam Narcissa, it is very good to see you again," said Harry with a happy smile. He couldn't explain why, but he always felt a ease, when he was with the Malfoy family. Like finally being with his family. "I had a great summer, I spent the majority at the Leaky Cauldron...."
"By yourself?" asked a worry Lucius, but he quickly compose himself when he notice that the whole of the Weasley's were watching their exchange with Harry. Clearing his throat, he said "Why didn't you owl Draco? You could of spend your summer with us a the Manor!"
"Well, you see, I saw told my the Minister himself, that I was not to leave Diagon Alley at all. I did wrote to Draco, explaining this" at that both elderly Malfoys look to their only son.
"Um...well. Harry told me of the occurrence and I did send the Minister an owl, pretending to be Father, asking to have Harry over for the remaining of the summer, and hopefully for the next few years to come. Meaning that you wanted to have Full custody of Harry. He owl back, but I had told Dobby to be on the look out if any owl was to come with a reply form the Minister himself for you to please send it to my room ASAP. He reply saying the he greatly regretted to decline the offer for this summer but that he would be looking to see what he could do for the next summers. You see the reason for Harry staying at the Drusley was for blood protection, but both Dumbedore and the Minister agreed that it seem to have never taken place.
"When questioning the Dursley family in a whole, they admitted to have never thought of Harry as family, thus canceling to blood bond between Harry and the Dursley. For that kind of Magic only works when they call each other family and Harry considers that place his home." Draco said this in a calm, mature voice. Leaving everyone that heard his speech awed struck, and Lucuis and Narcissa proud.
"You did that for me?"
"You used my name, to get your way?"They said at the same time, both Harry and Lucius stopped to look at one another, and smile, Lucius gave a small nod, indicating to Harry that he could go first.
But before Harry could say anything, there was a loud whistle. Guards were walking along the train, slamming all the doors shut.
"Quickly!" cried Mrs. Weasley.
Steam was billowing from the train; it had started to move. Harry and Draco ran to the compartment door and Ron threw it open and stood back to let them on, Draco helped Harry get on and then got on himself. They leaned out the window and waved at Mr. and Mrs. Weasley and to Mr. and Mrs. Malfoy until the train turned a corer and blocked them from view.
"I need to talk to you both in private," Harry muttered to Draco and Ron as the train picked up speed.
"Go away, Ginny," said Ron.
"Oh, that's nice," said Ginny huffily, and she stalked off.
Harry, Ron and Draco set off down the corridor, looking for an empty compartment, but all were full except for the one at the very end of the train.
This had only one occupant, a man sitting fast asleep next to the window. The stranger was wearing an extremely shabby set of wizard's robes that had been darned in several places, He looked ill and exhausted. Though quite young, his light brown hair was flecked with gray.
"Who d'you reckon he is?" Ron hissed as they sat down and slid the door shut, taking the seat farthest away from the window.
"Professor R. J. Lupin," whispered Draco at once.
"How d'you know that?"
"It's on his case," he replied, pointing at the luggage rack over the man's head, where there was a small, battered case held together with a large quantity of neatly knotted string. The name Professor R. J. Lupin was stamped across one corner in peeling letters.
"Wonder what he teaches?" said Ron.
"That's obvious," whispered Draco. "There's only one vacancy, isn't there? Defense Against the Dark Arts"
"Well, I hope he's up to it," said Ron doubtfully. "He looks like one good hex would finish him off, doesn't he? Anyway..." He turn to Harry. "What were you going to tell us?"
Harry explained what he had over heard Mr. and Mrs. Weasley talking about the night before.
"This Sirius Black was one of Vold...You-Know-Who's man, they said that he's out there looking to kill me, for destroying his master." Harry finished.
Ron looked thunderstruck, and Draco looked thoughtful. He said, "Sirius Black escaped to come after You? I don't know about that, Sirius is mothers cousin, for what both my parent have told me about the man, it seems he was the only one of the Black family to not follow Voldemort."
"Are you sure?" Harry asked. Draco nodded in confirmation.
"But they say he murder lots of muggles and a wizard," said Ron
"Yes, but they never really gave him a true and fare trial, did they?" question Draco.
"What are you saying?" asked Harry
"I don't think that Cousin Sirius, killed anyone. I think he was framed." He said in a matter-of-fact voice.
"Father told me that Sirius was...Is you godfather Harry! Had he not been sent to Askaban, you would have been raised by him, in the Wizarding world, and not with those good for nothing muggles." He said the last line with such venom that both Harry and Ron cringed.
Harry was, to say the least, shock. "I have a Godfather? But Aunt Petunia told me that I was never given one; how can I have a Godfather?" he said thunderstruck.
"Apparently he was friends with your parents," said Draco, "Him and some other fellow. There were two, but Sirius was accused of murdering Peter Pettigrew, he was the other of your fathers friends, I can't remember what was the name of the other one....I'll have to ask Uncle Sev, he'll be able to tell me. He did after all went to school with them." he said in a pensive kind of voice.
"Please do. I want to know everything there is to know about what really happen to my "parents"," here he gave Draco a meaningful look, "and my Godfather." He finished.
******
Hours later
The rain thickened as the train sped yet farther north; the windows were now a solid, shimmering gray, which gradually darken until lanterns flickered into life all along the corridors and over the luggage racks. The train rattled, the rain hammered, the wind roared, but still, Professor Lupin slept.
"We must be nearly there," said Ron, leaning forward to look past Professor Lupin at the now completely black window.
The words had hardly left him when the train started to slow down.
"Great," said Ron, getting up and walking carefully past Professor Lupin to try and see outside. "I'm starving. I want to get to the feast...."
"We can't be there yet," said Draco, checking his watch.
"So why 're we stopping?"
The train was getting slower. As the noise of the pistons fell away, the wind and rain sounded louder then ever against the windows.
Harry, who was nearest the door, got up to look into the corridor. All along the carriage, heads were sticking curiously out of their compartments.
Then, without warning, all the lamps went out and they were plunged into total darkness.
"What's going on?" Ron's voice came from behind Harry.
"Ouch!" gasped Draco. "Damn, Weasley, that was my foot!"
Harry felt his way back to his seat.
"D' you think we've broken down?" asked Ron, ignoring Draco, he was getting use to him whinnying.
"Dunno...."
"There's something moving out there," Ron said. "I think people are coming aboard..."
The compartment door suddenly opened and someone fell painfully over Harry's legs.
"Sorry-- d' you know what's going on?-- Ouch-- sorry--"
"Hullo, Neville," said Harry, feeling around in the dark and pulling Neville up by his cloak. They became friends ever since Harry return his Remembrall.
"Harry? Is that you? What's happening?"
"No idea-- sit down--"
"Ouch!" said Neville again.
"Quiet!" said a hoarse voice suddenly.
Professor Lupin appeared to have woken up at last. Harry could hear movements in his corner. None of them spoke.
"Stay where you are," but before Professor Lupin could reach the door, it slid slowly open. There stood a cloaked figure that towered to the ceiling. It's face was completely hidden beneath its hood. Harry's eyes darted downward, and what he saw made his stomach contract. There was a hand protruding from the cloak and it was glistening, grayish, slimy-looking and scabbed, like something dead that had decayed in water...
Then the thing beneath the hood, what ever it was, drew a long, slow, rattling breath, as though it were trying to suck something more than air from its surroundings.
An intense cold swept over them all. Harry felt his own breath catch in his chest. The cold went deeper than his skin. It was inside his chest, it was inside his very heart....
Harry's eyes rolled up into his head. He couldn't see. He was drowning in cold. There was a rushing in his ears as though of water....
********
When he came to, he found himself in the school infirmary. Grunting he tried to sit up...
"Harry, how do you feel?" Draco asked.
"Are you feeling dizzy?" asked the soft voice of Professor Lupin.
"Auuu...my head hurts" moan Harry.
"I should think so, Mr. Potter" said the voice of Madam Pomfrey's.
Harry looked up to see that Professor Lupin, Professor Snape, Draco and Ron were there, and Madam Pomfrey was like always when he found himself in this room, fussing over him, casting spells left and right.
When Medi- witch was happy with the results and giving Harry a bar of chocolate, she dismissed Harry from the infirmary.
**************
Through out the months, Harry keep seeing a Grim here and there. There had also been an incident where supposedly Sirius Black was in the castle. Trying to break into Slytherin's common room. Of course this being the house of paranoiacs, Sirius never found a way to get into said common rooms. Harry had gone out with Draco looking for Sirius, but had no such luck in finding him.
Harry, because of the Dementors surrounding the school, who were looking for Sirius, was being effected the most, had gone to Professor Lupin for help. He was taking extra lessons with Professor Lupin or Remus as he asked Harry to call him out of class, to learn The Patronus charm, in order to defend himself and those he care for against Dementors.
Draco had been injured in Care of Magical Creature, by a hippogriff, name Buckbeak, thanks to their dorm mate, Marcus Flint. Draco had seen, how after Harry had finish mounting the hippogriff, Flint through a rock at buckbeak. Draco had just pushed Harry out of the way when Buckbeak had attach, luckily Draco only got bitten by it and not stumped on.
When Harry couldn't be with him, in the hospital wing Pansy would stay with Draco. Sometime with her girlfriend Hermione Granger from Gryffindor. Harry liked her, though Draco had a bit of a problem with her, you see Hermione was really, really smart and was almost out doing him and Harry on almost every class.
Of coarse with the exception in Potion. Hermione was really good at it, but Harry with so many years of having to cook for his muggle "family" and Draco with his extra lessons through out his childhood from his Godfather, were both exceptionally good, and with what ever help they needed, they each had the other to back them up.
After that there was also the incident with Harry and Cedric Diggory in Quidditch. First Harry had once again seen the Grim, then when he was chasing the Snitch, a herd of Dementors had come upon him with out noticing. Harry had fallen out of his broom and thus, losing his first match against Cedric Diggory from Hufflepuff. The fall didn't kill him, but Draco sure almost did, when Harry had come too. It was thanks to Ron that Harry was still breathing and with a healthy heart beat. One problem was, that on his fall, Harry's broom had shattered, leaving Harry without a broom for next game.
Harry had also been depress, because he wasn't allow to go to Hogsmeade. He had made plans with both Draco and Ron to meet up by the Shrieking Shack, under his invisibility cloak.
Fortunately for him, Fred and George gave him a map of the school called The Marauder's Mad. It had been made by four people, Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. Which showed every single person on the school grounds, along with every single sacred passage. The Twins had made it their prerogative to show, Harry, which of the passages were good and which were not.
That was also when Harry found out that Sirius had also been James and Lilly Potter secret keeper. He rushed to where Draco was, and had demanded for him to explain to him, how could Sirius be their secret keeper and not betrayed them. Draco thought about it for a while before telling Harry that the only way was, for James and Lilly to have changed who the secret keeper was going to be and told no one.
"After all, it is a very Slytherin thing to do" He had said with pride, for his cousin the "Gryffindor" with a bit of Slytherin in him.
************
On Christmas morning, Harry was woken by Draco throwing his pillow at him.
"Presents!"
Harry reached for his glasses and put them on, squinting through the semi-darkness to the foot of his bed, where a small heap of parcels had appeared. Draco was already ripping the paper off his own presents.
"Another silk black shirt from mother," said Draco, a bit grumpily. Narcissa had for the pass three year been sending Draco a silk shirt. First year it was gray , second yea was emerald green, and this year was black. "Why can't she get something other then silk shirts?" He whined to Harry.
"I don't know Drake, but do please keep it this year." said Harry referring to the fact that Draco had given the shirt to Harry under the pretence that it was the wrong size.
"I felt weird wearing it last year, that I had no other place to wear it. If Uncle Vernon saw me with it on. He'll demand where I got it from, from who I stole it. Then when I tell him that I got it as a gift from a friend from this world, he'll bea.... Umm, he'll be angry." he corrected.
Draco notice the small hesitation, and error. Though Harry was a Slytherin, he wore his feeling most of the time on him sleeve. For all to see. He knew what Harry was about to say, and it both pained and anger him, that those filthy muggles abused his friend. He really hope that the Ministry would give his father full custody of Harry that way they would be always together.
"Ok--but this one is still yours. Mother doesn't think that I grow while I am out of the Manor. She got me the size I was before starting school. here," said Draco, handling over the shirt. Harry hesitated for a bit, before taking it.
"I'll wear it today then." said Harry, with a huge smile, that reached from ear to ear.
They spend the day fooling around outside, playing snowball fights and making snowmen that resemble a teacher.
That night they had plan to finally try to see if they were able to transform into their inner animal.
