Strange Coincidences

Hermione sat at her desk, tapping her pencil against the side of her cup she stared into space. She’d had the oddest feeling of worry that had caused her to pick up the phone and ring the nursery downstairs twice already this morning. Nothing was wrong with her daughter, it was something else.

“Miss Granger!” A petit woman came flying in the office door, out of breath and looking afraid.

“What is it Sarah?” Hermione asked, jumping to her feet immediately.

“I tried to tell them they couldn’t but they wouldn’t listen. They had a declaration from the Minister himself.” Sarah panted, holding onto a chair for support.

“What?”

“They’ve brought a prisoner from Azkaban here, they say they won’t take him back until they know what’s going on.”

“Walk with me,” Hermione said briskly, heading out of the door. “Who’s the prisoner?”

“Barty Crouch Jnr, Ma’am.”

“What?” Hermione didn’t stop, she sped up, “He’s been kissed by a Dementor, they don’t usually bring them here if they’re dying. They let nature take its course.”

“He’s not ill, ma’am.”

“Which room?” She asked as they entered the secure ward.

“34.” Sarah panted as she was struggling to keep up with her.

She marched straight into the room and was greeted by a rather gnarled looking guard who blocked her path.

“Who are you?” He asked in a gruff voice.

“I’m chief healer here at Saint Mungo’s. Would you mind telling me why a prisoner has been brought into my hospital without someone first consulting me?” Hermione was used to men not taking her seriously, some even asked if she was the chief healers secretary.

“We have permission of the Minister for Magic, we need this prisoners condition verified.” He replied, handing over a scroll which Hermione glanced at quickly before thrusting it back at him and walking to the bedside.

A face she knew from dreams stared back at her, expression vacant and limps totally still. He wasn’t behaving like someone who no longer had a soul. “What means have you used to control the primal instincts he should be reacting to?”

“Standard potions, everything by the book.” She pulled her stethoscope from her pocket and listened to his heart beat, checked his temperature before standing back.

“Why is he here? Everything seems fine.”

Before the guard could respond she heard a voice to the side whisper something like, “Irony.”

She turned quickly to see something in Barty’s eyes before it was gone and there was nothing there.

“That’s why,” the guard replied, “He should not be doing that.”

“It could be just a reflex,” Hermione replied looking intently at Barty, “He is capable, when not drugged up, of making sounds.”

“Once yes but this isn’t a one off. He has been saying that for the last few days, along with other things.” The guard took a seat by the door and shook out a copy of the Daily Prophet, “Take your time. I like it here better than Azkaban.”

Hermione huffed and marched out the door, Sarah in her wake. When they made it a few doors away Hermione stopped dead almost causing Sarah to walk into her. “I want one healer in the room with him at all times. Keep track of anything he says, does, if he sneezes I want to know about it.”

“Can we afford to spare one healer every shift?” Sarah asked, taking out notebook and scratching something quickly.

“We’re gonna have to.” Hermione brushed her hair behind her ears and looked up and down the corridor. “Call Jessica and Lee, I need a consultation. As soon as possible Sarah.”

“Okay.”

“Send them to my office when they get here.”

“Yes Ma’am.”

“Sarah, it’s Hermione, please call me by my name.” Hermione said, striding off, her skirt swaying and her heels clicking. This was one of the strangest coincidences she had ever experienced. She had been told that there was seer blood in her family but having extremely erotic dreams about a man for him to then end up in her hospital? That was just strange.
