~*~*~*Chapter Four/ Unexpected behaviour…*~*~*~

Sirius was leading me through the corridors of Hogwarts and I didn’t know where he would bring me or what he was up to; all I knew was that he seemed to be really mad about something. I swallowed at this thought.

Afraid of what might come next I followed him hesitantly with my hand clutched in my coat.

Finally we reached a painting of a really fat woman. //This is the entrance to the Gryffindor tower…but why is Sirius bringing me here? //

“Password!!!” she piped and blew here rosy cheeks

//She looks disgusting…//

As Sirius leaned forward to provide the password, he kept hold of me, but I could only hear a vague whisper and in the next second the portrait let us in.

A wave of warm air coiled around me as we entered the room. It was lit by a temperate cheerfully crackling open fire.
The common room of the Gryffindor tower was full to the brim by its inhabitants and I guessed that they wouldn’t really be pleased to see me - one of the villainous Slytherins.
While the black haired boy dragged me behind him I heard the whispers and giggles. Perhaps they thought that he’s trying to prank me again and that they’d have a good show that they could watch. It didn’t bother me that they thought that way, because I agreed with them. I could never imagine that Sirius Black would treat me with little but cruelty and harshness. They and I were more than surprised when he merely pulled me after him up to the boys' dormitories.

I was only able to stumble behind him with wide, doubtful eyes.

What is he up to?

Finally we reached the door of the dorm room and I was roughly pushed inside.

“Wait here,” he said as he turned around to go downstairs again. ‘I bet he talks to the rest of his gang…’

With nothing else to do other than look around the room, I let my gaze wander over the furniture. Four beds with rich burgundy curtains were spaced around the circular room and beside each to the right stood a nightstand with a beautiful antique lamp. At the foot of the beds were four ornate chests. The whole scene was lit by the inviting warmth of the candles that were mounted along the walls. This room was much more comfortable than the bedrooms of the Slytherins.

By the time Sirius still wasn’t back. ‘Maybe he has a discussion with his friends about me and what I’m doing here. ‘

This is really a subject that would interest me, too…

While I continued to wait as he told me to, I just invited myself to sit down on one of the beds and stared at the ceiling. The frieze showed a struggle between Godric Gryffindor and …I began to shudder…… some gargoyles! A horrible memory of the situation I was in a few minutes before came back to my mind, which surprised me somehow.

How was I able to forget this so fast? Did Sirius do that? Or am I just used to this that I just forgot…?

//Maybe I’m just a doll with a numb body and soul…//

Suddenly the sight above me was blocked by a big black shadow. It took me some moments to realize which or who it was that darkened my view. Again I looked in those grey eyes that seemed to sparkle from the intense power of their owner.

“Are you freezing? Well, it wouldn’t surprise me; you’re such a scrag…” he said with a teasing grin. I blinked a few moments before I answered.

“No… I’m alright… I … I should go now…” I’m too tired to respond to his vulgarity. As I was about to stand, Sirius shoved me down and glared at me, clearly annoyed.

“You’re not going anywhere, ‘cause I don’t fancy picking up your bloody corpse from the floor.” I looked at him in surprise.

Why is he so persistent that I’m staying here?

“And why shouldn't I?” I asked him.

“Don’t bother about it…”

I growled at his evasive response, which earned me a wide smirk from him. Sirius turned around and my gaze followed him to the chest. While he searched through the drawers I admired his tall and powerful appearance. And again the thought that he was all that I would never be, came to my mind.

“Found it!” He beamed suddenly and turned around with a big grin on his face.
Instantly I began to blush. This was the very first time that he looked at me this way.
Sure, I had seen him grinning before, but never towards me. I couldn’t help but really enjoy the fact that he was doing it now.

As he approached me he held some clothes in his hands. “Here, they’re too small for me, so they should fit your skinny body…”

I blinked at him in confusion before taking the clothes from his hands, carefully looking them over.
My eyes widened as I realized how expensive these robes must have been. Instantly I peered into Sirius’ eyes.

“A… Are you sure that you want to give me these?” I asked hesitantly. And once more Sirius surprised me this evening; he smiled at me gently and stroked my hair.

“Of course you dummy…”

He turned around again just to hand me a tray full of delicious food. ‘I didn’t see him bringing this in here…’

This must be a dream…

“Aren’t you hungry?” he asked and cocked his head to the side in a canine gesture. “You should eat, because you’re looking about to faint and I don’t want to have to sweep together any the dropped food.”

I nodded and started to eat what Black had given me. Why is he doing this for me? Why is he so kind to me? Doesn’t he hate me? I always believed that…

“As soon as you have finished your meal, change your clothes, please.”

After a while I couldn’t stand his odd, yet friendly behaviour anymore and had to ask him. “Why are you so caring all of a sudden, Black?” Again his face was unreadable.

“It’s just because I can’t stand the thought of Malfoy doing those disgusting things to you…”

“But you’re no better!” I snarled thoughtlessly.

“What? You’re comparing me to that snaky bastard?!” Sirius Black screeched, stunned. I rose angrily to my feet as I answered him.

“How can you ask ‘what’? Aren’t you one of those boys that treat me cruelly and pull tricks on me? Aren’t you one of those who call me names and laughs at every bad thing that happens to me? Aren’t you the one who hates me most out of all of them? You have no right to talk that way! You have no right to pity me and you never have! You-”

All thought escaped me; I couldn’t fathom what was happening.

Sirius Black was holding me. Again. What followed was even more unbelievable. He held my face between his hands and kissed me intensely. His lips roamed gently over mine and he made me feel so calm and loved.

I know that he doesn’t love me, but I just feel this way… A moment of complete happiness…

But this moment ended really quickly and Sirius pulled away and looked at me with his mysterious silver-grey eyes.

“This is the only way I know to soothe someone when he’s upset,” The black haired boy released me from his arms and looked at me apologetically. But maybe I just imagined things.
“I have to go now… Lucius will be more than mad at me now…”

“No, stay!”

“Why? It really is none of your business, Black,” I said as I left the room.

But before I could leave the Gryffindor common room a pair of strong arms pulled me back and I faced Sirius again.

“Stay for the night. I bet you've never had a quiet night since Malfoy began to…” He whispered the rest, so that only I was able to hear him. “Rape you.”

I swallowed at his words and looked in another direction only to meet a pair of hazel eyes.

James Potter…

“If Sirius asks you so nicely why do you have to be so mean and deny him this?” The raven asked with a cocky grin.

Thoughtfully I watched my feet before I answered.

The problem is if I don’t return to Lucius now I’ll make it even worse…Not that it’s not already bad enough. Well, it’s not only that, which holds me back. What if this is nothing but a mean prank that they’re pulling on me again?

A worried glance into Sirius eyes was all it took for him to understood my doubts and he gave me again that gentle smile of his.

I wonder how he can know me so well…

He embraced me openly, stunning the whole crowd of watching Gryffindors and myself, speechless.

“Don’t be afraid, I won’t bite you…” he whispered into my ear.

Some moments later I gave him a small smile. “Okay, but just for one night.”

“Good,” Sirius gave me a genius grin and led me to the open fire. “Sit down; I’ll get us some cocoa.”

I stared into the fire. The warm light gave me a feeling of total security. ‘I just can’t believe that this is all really happening…’ Caught up in my thoughts I didn’t notice when someone sat down beside me.

“Sirius is a really, erm, how do I say it… protective kind of person. I don’t know, at least he takes care of you, right?”

I jumped slightly.

It was Potter again. James looked at me with an understanding smile. “He told us that you needed protection and that he will ensure that you get it. It’s unexpected behaviour for someone like him towards you, right?”

Why does he speak to me so…friendly? I’m one of his enemies. What is he trying to explain to me with those words?

“Why are you telling me this, Potter?” I didn’t look at him while I spoke focusing my eyes on the flames.

“Because I want you to understand that Sirius is not that bastard-like…”
My head turned around and I looked at him with a mixed expression on my face. “So you’re trying to say that it’s not because of me that he treats me this way, but because of my pitiful situation? Okay, I get this…”

Before he could reply, Sirius came back sitting down next to my right and offering me some cocoa with sweet marshmallows, cream and praline. With a marvelled gaze I took the cup into my hands and began to drink the sugary liquid. It was the first time in many of years that something like this ran down my throat. I closed my eyes with the feeling of peace and the memory of my mothers’ smiling face.

What I didn’t realise at that time was the smile on my face and the way Sirius and all the others looked at me.

The important things to go on are not the future and the dreams you have, but the people and the happy and sad memories you have by your side. But at that time I wasn’t aware of this.

As I opened my eyes again and looked at Sirius I saw his amazed expression.
But I was just too happy to pay much attention to this. Suddenly I just felt so tired that I got to my feet and turned around to the dormitory of the boys.

“Where am I going to sleep?”

Sirius hesitated momentarily before responding. “You can sleep in my bed,” he murmured.

Instead of replying I nodded and made my way upstairs with the feeling that it would be the best sleep I would ever have.
