Chapter 4- What dreams may come...
Chapter 4
Supper was a grand affair, Ron had even ventured out of his reclusive state to join in, hoping to be able to show his girlfriend that he was there for her, but she acted like he wasn’t even in the same zip code, much less dinner table as she was. In fact Ron wasn’t sure, but he felt that at some odd times during the meal she was looking towards Snape! The nerve! She should be looking at him, but no she’s giving her I need something look to that ugly git.
Ron couldn’t eat, he stared at the wonderful meal his mother had prepared, for the first time in his life, Ron wasn’t hungry. In fact, he felt as if he’d be sick. So he pushed in his plate.
“I’m uh, going to my room, thanks for supper mum, Night everyone.” He felt a black cloud begin to form around him, and he couldn’t stand to be around anyone or anything.
“Alright, Ron, dear, have a good night’s rest, we’ll all need that over the next weeks… maybe months… who knows maybe even years… The war is coming to a head.” She grew silent as her youngest son walked out of the room.
---
Hermione didn’t notice that Ron had left; she barely noticed he was in the same house as she was. She just didn’t want to deal with him right now. She couldn’t handle having to speak of her emotions to anyone, and right now she was doing all she could to appear to be alright. She was somber, but she would speak with the people at the table.
Harry didn’t push her, neither did Severus, and how did she feel about being to call him Severus, she wasn’t sure of that yet. Molly would love for her to open up to her, but seemed to know that pushing wasn’t the way to get it done, as she’d lost enough people to know how to handle the situation. The rest of the group just couldn’t get around the fact that it had happened, and weren’t entirely sure how to talk to her, that was fine. The only problem was Ron, he.. he was insufferable most of the time, and right now she couldn’t handle him. That’s all there was too that.
Or at least she thought that was all there was to that, in her current state of emotional distress there could be whole other levels of why she didn’t want to speak to Ron. She’d figure that all out later.
---
Severus watched Hermione out of the corner of his eye, he saw the way she avoided everyone’s gaze, and knew that she was in danger of shutting down. It was the only way he managed to keep from going insane, and he could see the familiar start to the process clearly. He didn’t want that for the young woman, hell if he could stand it, he wouldn’t ask it for himself.
As the meal winded down Severus excused himself. He walked up the stairs and turned into his bedroom. He lay down in bed and sprawled out taking the full size frame all for himself, falling asleep quickly for the first time in years. It was probably the torture, the healing, perhaps even the camaraderie of the evening, but most likely it was the cooking…the best home cooked meal he’d had …well ever. He’d always had Elves do his bidding, and while they were great, it just wasn’t the same. A food prepared by a mother was always best. But he didn’t have a mother anymore… She’d died long long ago of a muggle disease that the wizarding world had no cure for.
Still yet he fell asleep quickly and without remorse.
---
Hermione’s night of sleep was wrought with nightmares, in them she saw the horrible demise of her mother, felt the heat from the explosion, heard her father gasp just before he was blown apart. She screamed long and hard into the night, completely unaware she was screaming.
Ron slept through the night without incident, used to hearing the bangs and whizzes of his brothers, and the screams and howls of the ghoul in the attic. In fact there was only one person in the house that roused from his dreamless sleep.
This person awoke in a panic, the screams disorientating him, and then as he found his bearings, he knew. It was her. He grabbed his robes and threw them on his athletic form, hiding his undergarments underneath the swaths of fabric hanging from his broad shoulders.
His hair was tangled and he pulled a hair tie through it, pulling it back at his nape. He crossed the room, then the hallway, and then into her unwarded rooms. “Hermione… It’s ok, wake up, they are only dreams. They aren’t real.” His voice was warm and soft, not as severe as he normally sounded, but he didn’t want to scare her, he only wanted her to soften her screams, or to wake and feel that the dreams wouldn’t come back at least for awhile.
“Mum! Dad! Don’t come for me! Mum! Dad! NOooooo!” She screamed again and her savior did the only thing he could think to do. He wrapped her in his strong arms and rocked her against his body.
“Come on Hermione wake up, it’s only a dream.” He continued to rock, and finally gave in. He uttered a spell, took a deep breath and joined her on the astral plane.
---
Severus was surrounded by death, a handbag at his feet, he smelled the fear of the girl in front of him, and could hear the scream as it echoed out of her mouth and into his ear. “Hermione, sweetheart, you must wake up, this is just a dream.”
She continued to scream until he crossed the wreckage to take her in his arms. “Hermione, wake up, you have to wake up. Everything is going to be ok, as long as you wake up. This is a dream, don’t subject yourself to this scene over and over, there was nothing you could do. I…I wish I could make this all go away for you, but it would cause more pain in the long run. You must wake up, and stop all the bloody screaming!”
His voice raised quite a few decibels on the last sentence of his pleadings, and the girl finally stopped screaming and stared at the man before her. “Profess… I mean Severus what are you doing here?”
“I’m saving the day… or rather the night, you silly chit. Now wake up so I can speak to you for real.” He hugged her to his body and was forced back into reality, Hermione was awake, and in his arms…
