Detention With Umbridge
Author's Note Here it is folks, the detention you knew was coming from the moment Professor Umbridge entered the story. Also in this chapter is a bit of a heart to heart between Hunter and Dumbledore.
Friday evening Hunter enters Professor Umbridge's office as scheduled and waits for the Professor to give him his assignment. "I believe I told you not to wear your glasses in my classroom," she tells him as she hands him a piece of parchment and a quill.
Hunter shrugs as he removes his sunglasses. "As you wish," he says as he puts them in his jacket pocket. "So what's my punishment for the evening?"
"You are to write 'I will not disrupt class' until I tell you that you can leave." Umbridge tells him. Hunter notices that she seems too pleased for his assignment to be simple lines.
"Fine I'll play along," he grins as he begins writting the lines. As he began to write he felt a sharp pain in his hand. He continues writting and feels the pain continue as he writes. Once he stops he feels the pain slowly fade away. Hunter laughs as his mind catches on to what she's doing. "Clever trick," he flashes a fanged grin. "Too bad it will be gone before I even get back to my dorm."
"What are you talking about?" Professor Umbridge asks feigning innocence.
Hunter removes his glove and shows her the lines cut into his hand. He smiles as he sees her recoil from the clawed hand. "I like your style," he tells her. "But all it takes is this." Hunter licks the back of his hand causing the lines to slowly fade away.
He shows her the healed hand and her eyes widened as she realizes that her plan has no effect on him. "Get out you foul half-breed and never come back. When the Minister hears about this,"
“Sorry Professor," Hunter says putting his glove and sunglasses back on. "But there’s really nothing that he can do,” he states. “While the Ministry is able to pass laws to control werewolves they have no authority over the other changing breeds, even those in England." He turns and walks out the door hoping that his little bluff worked.
As Hunter walked back to Gryffindor he thought about what he had told Umbridge. It was true that the Ministry had no authority over the changing breeds, so they could not really do anything to him from that front. The problem was that he was in the country on a student visa and once he graduated from Hogwarts he would have to either return to America or apply for a work visa to remain in the country. "Assuming they'd even allow me to stay," he says to himself.
"If she has anything to say about the matter I'll be deported the day after Graduation." Hunter thinks about the prospect of returning to America as a shiver runs down his spine. While it's true he never wanted to come here in the first place he has come to actually like it here. "I've got friends, a band, Carla and Katie," he says aloud to himself. "My life's finally becoming something I can enjoy and now I might lose it again." He growls loudly as be nears the Tower. "Why is it that the ones in power have to be such a bunch of bigoted idiots?"
"Probably because those with enough common sense to know right from wrong don't want the responsibility that goes along with it." Hunter quickly turns around and finds himself face to face with Professor Dumbledore. "Good evening Mr. Catiar," the kind old wizard says. "I take it things did not go well during you detention with Professor Umbridge."
Hunter laughs. "You could say that. She told me to never go back which is fine with me."
"Ah I see," Professor Dumbledore signals for Hunter to follow him and they are soon standing outside the Room of Requirements. "We can speak more freely inside."
Hunter enters the room and finds it to be an exact replica of the Headmaster's office. "A word of advise," Hunter offers as the Professor closes the door. "You may wish to reconsider allowing me to speak freely."
There is a twinkle in Dumbledore's eye as he gives Hunter a friendly smile. "You will not be punished for speaking your mind in this room Mr. Catiar." he watches Hunter shrug as the young man plops down on an over stuffed chair.
"Tried to warn you," Hunter reminds the Headmaster as he takes his gloves and sunglasses off. He then sets his feet up in the coffee table and looks at Dumbledore expectantly. "Shoot."
The Headmaster nods as he takes the chair opposite Hunter and folds his hands in front of his face. "I have been considering the changes you have undergone over the summer and am curious as to the exact nature of your relationship with the tiger with in you."
Hunter shrugs as he usually does. "We get along just fine." Hunter holds out his hand as the room provides a pack of cigarettes for him. "I've made my peace with what I am even though I don't understand why I can't return to my original appearance." He takes out a cigarette and lights it. "The tiger is a part of me as I am a part of him." Hunter takes a drag before continueing. "He has a few tendencies that I could live without," Hunter admits. "But I've learned to accept most of them."
Professor Dumbledore notices the faint blush in Hunter's cheeks. "Such as?" The Headmaster asks the young Bastet before him.
"Let's just say that I've had more then my fair share of cold showers since I got back." Hunter chuckles.
Dumbledore gives the young man a knowing smile. "While I do not condone students having sex I understand that it does happen far more frequently then anyone cares to admit. In your case I can certainly understand your frustration and commend you for your restraint."
Hunter nods as he notices the time. "It's getting late," he says. "If there is nothing further you wish to talk about I'll take my leave now."
"Ah, so it is." Dumbledore replies. "I will bid you good night and hope that we can talk again at another time."
