Shadows of Pain

Author's Notes: I used two of my favorite songs in this chapter. Seether - Broken (featuring Amy Lee) and The Black Crowes - She Talks to Angels. I modified Broken to fit with the story line so please don't tell me how the song goes. I know how the song's suposed to go but the original version didn't fit with what I was trying to do. Also keep an ear out for more songs to follow in up coming Chapters.

In the weeks that followed Hunter's attitude remained unchanged. As a result the other students, especially those in his own house, had begun treating him the same way his former schoolmates had. He was left completly alone, which was the way he prefered it. Each day he would eat his meals by himself and each night he would head directly to his room and smoke a cigarette and play his guitar.

His roommates would ask him to stop once they came up to bed and he would then spray air freshener to cover the smell so they could sleep. That was the only time anyone besides the teachers spoke to him. The teachers had also taken to ignoring him except to issue detention and deduct points for smoking around the castle, failur to dress properly, and the few fights he had been involed with. At the first faculty meeting they had worked out a schedule for his detentions with each of then taking a different night during the week.

His schoolwork had been impecable and as a result they left him along in class provided he did nothing to warrent their attention. For Hunter Catiar his new school was exactly the same as his old school. New country, new faces, same situation.

One day while he was in Transfiguration class he was supposed to be working on transfiguring a hedgehog into a teapot but instead he was writting something in his notebook while Professor McGonagall was making her rounds observing the class' progress.

"Mr. Catiar what are you doing?" His Head of House asked in an irritated tone of voice. "Your assignment is to transfigure your hedgehog into a teapot."

"I'm writting song." He answers while continueing to write in his notebook.

"Mr. Catiar, you will stop what you are doing right now and complete your assignment or I will have to..."

Hunter picks his wand up off his desk and without even pausing his writting, casts the proper spell and changes the hedgehog into a teapot. Setting his wand back down he pauses from his writting to consider a line before writting it down.

McGonagall is of course extremelly irritated with Hunter at the moment but says nothing as she continues to check on the rest of her class. He has so much potental I hate seeing it go to waste. I wish there was someway to get through to him. Professor McGonagall always took it as a personal failure when one of HER students was slipping through the cracks so badly that there appeared no way to save them.

Harry and the others saw what had happened as Hermione help both him and Ron with their own hedgehogs. Harry had managed to get his to resemble a teapot but it still had quills here and there. Ron was struggling even more then he was. So far Ron had only managed to change his hedgehog's skin to porcelain but it was still a hedgehog.

"What's his problem?" Harry wondered aloud. In the weeks since he's met Hunter he has never been able to figure the other guy out.

"I don't know," Hermione answered. "He doesn't talk to anyone unless they talk to him first. Even then he only answers what's asked and doesn't speak about any thing personal."

"Forget about him and help me get this right." Ron nearly whined.

Since it was Friday night Hunter had met with Professor Lupine for his nightly detention. It was also the night before the first Quidditch match of the season, featuring Gryffindor versus Slytherin.

Do to his actions, even with the teacher's agreement Gryffindor was still in last place. With Gryffindor following Hufflepuff by 200 points each match was more important then in any previous year in Hogwart's history.

As a result it came as no surprise to him when he entered the common room it was completely deserted. He walked up to his room and found that his roommates had already gone to sleep. Collecting his cigarettes, guitar and ashtray Hunter heads back down stairs and takes a seat in a chair in front of the fireplace.

He begins to play his guitar, closing his eyes as he allows himself to feel the pain the music invokes. The all too familiar song is one he wrote shortly after he lost the only person he ever cared about in his old school.

I wanted you to know, that I loved the way you laughed. I wanted to hold you high and steal your pain away. I keep your photograph, and I know it serves me well. I wanted to hold you high and steal your pain. Because I'm broken, and I'm lonesome. And I don't feel right, since you've gone away. You've gone away. I don't feel you, here anymore.

Katherine Bell was having trouble sleeping that night. Tomorrow was her first Quidditch Match of the season. While she never had much trouble sleeping before a game none of the others mattered as much as this one did. Gryffindor was 200 point behind Hufflepuff and they needed as many points as they could get to be back in the running for the House Cup. All because some stupid new kid cost us 500 points his first day. I don't think even Fred and George have cost us that many points in an entire year.

Katie decides to stop trying to sleep and gets out of bed and takes a walk around the tower to clear her head. Putting on her slippers and night robe she makes her way down to the common room. Once she reaches the top of the steps she hears music coming from her destination. She makes her way slowly and stops in her tracks as she sees the new guy playing a guitar singing to himself.

The worst is over now and I can breath again. I wanted to hold you high and steal your pain away. There's so much left to learn, and so much left to fight. I wanted to hold you high and steal your pain. 'Cause I'm broken, when I'm open and I don't feel like, I am strong enough. 'Cause I'm broken, when I'm lonesome. And I don't feel right, since you've gone away. 'Cause I'm broken, and I'm lonesome. And I don't feel right, since you've gone away. You've gone away. I don't feel you, here anymore.

Hunter sets his guitar down and pulls out a cigarette. As he lights it he gets the feeling that he's no longer alone. "If you're coming down then do it, other wise go back to bed." He never once looks up to see who it is; he just takes a drag and stares into the fire. His emotions are once again back under control as the girl wakes over and sits in the chair opposite him.

"You know there's no smoking in the school right?" Katie asks looking at him. He's dressed in a pair of faded black jeans, a red T-shirt and white socks. His biker jacket lies over the arm of a near by chair and his work boots are set next to the chair he's in.

"Tell a prefect or get a teacher so they can add another night to my schedule." He says taking another drag.

GOD he's annoying... "What's the point?" She asks frustrated. "We'll just lose more points and you'll only do it again." She leans back in her chair and watches him as he shrugs. "What's your problem anyways? Don't you even care that you're always in trouble?"

Hunter looks at her as he takes another drag from his cigarette. "I don't have any problem and no, I don't care." He sets the cigarette in the ashtray and picks up his guitar again. "If you don't like American Muggle Rock better tell me now."

Katie growls in frustration but gets no response. "Fine, you know that song that band did about a girl talking to angels?"

"The Black Crowes," He answers. "The name of the song is 'She Talks to Angels.'"

"That's the one," Katie says. "Can you play that one for me?"

Hunter doesn't answer as he starts playing the song. "She never mentions the word addiction, in certain company. Yes, she’ll tell you she’s an orphan, after you meet her family. She paints her eyes as black as night now, pulls those shades down tight. Yeah she gives a smile when the pain comes, the pain’s gonna make everything alright. That's right. Says she talks to angels, they call her out by her name. She talks to angels, says they call her out by her name.

Katie sits back in her chair and listens as he plays the song. He's very good. I guess he can't be all that bad.

She keeps a lock of hair in her pocket. She wears a cross around her neck. Yes the hair is from a little boy, and the cross is someone she has not met. Not yet. Says she talks to angels,
says they all know her name. Oh yeah, she talks to angels. Says they call her out by her name. She don’t know no lover, none that I ever seen. Yes, to her that ain’t nothing. But to me, yeah me, it’s everything.

Hunter continues to play as he watches her fall asleep in the chair. Sweet dreams.

She paints her eyes as black as night now, she pulls those shades down tight. Oh yeah, there’s a smile when the pain comes. The pain’s gonna make everything alright, alright. Yeah. She talks to angels, says they call her out by her name. Oh yeah, yeah, angels, call her out by her name. Oh, angels they call her out by her name. Oh, she talks to angels, they call her out yeah, they call her out. Don’t you know that they call her out by her name.

Hunter stops playing and sets his guitar down. Getting up he picks up his jacket and then gently drapes it over the sleeping girl. He walks back to his own seat and puts his cigerett out before picking his guitar back up to continue playing. Deciding not to wake her up he plays soft ballads without singing along.
