Chapter 4

Draco sent away fo his next gift. The only way he knew how to win a person over was to give them gifts and the next gift he had planned for Hermione was magnificant. He had been keeping a very close eye on her over the last two weeks. He had felt the strangest sensations as he watched her read in their private common room or sit in the corner writing something she would not let him see. When he tried too hard to see what it was she would move down to the Gryffindor common room where everyone was curious but no one bothered her.
On the morning of September 19 Draco recieved the thing he had ordered and just in time for he had learned that it was Hermione's birthday. Hermione was very surprised when a post owl came swooping down to her carrying a small package. There was a note on the top: Happy Birthday Hermione, An Admirer. Hermione was very curious as to who was sending her things and she didn't want to open the package in front of the hall so she hurried up to her common room before classes and ripped it open.
Inside was the most elaborately made silver chain with a dragon shaped charm on it made of diamonds and onyx. Who would have the money to get her something like this and who would? Still, she could hardly send it back and it was in her soul colors which she had come to like very much so she fastened it on. Draco could hardly contain his excitement when he saw her wearing it later that afternoon.
In the common room that evening Draco asked,
"That dragon pendant where did it come from?"
"That isn't really any buisness of yours is it Malfoy? If you must know some overly kind person has been sending me these beautiful gifts in my favorite colors and signing notes with An Admirer. I have no clue who it is but they must have a lot of money to be able to afford to give away something like this." Hermione gently touched the pendant around her neck and went back to writing in her notebook.
All of a sudden she began to feel very sleepy and only had just enough time to seal her notebook so no one could read it before she collapsed onto the floor as the Loralya sleep claimed her. Her last thought before she passed out was that someone was going to find out what she was now because in the sleep she couldn't hold the spell that kept her ears looking normal and since he was the only one around that person was sure to be Malfoy.
Malfoy was, to say the least, surprised when Hermione fell to the floor but he hurried over to help her hoping to the gods that she was asleep and wouldn't remember that it was him. As he lifted her into his arms her silvery hair fell back revealing her ears. At first he noticed nothing but then he did a double take. Her ears now tapered to a point. He was holding an elf in his arms.
Being a pureblooded wizard Malfoy knew enough about elves to know that he was honored to be in ones presence. This also explained why she had changed so much and several other things as well. One of which was why she was now dead to the world. The Loralya sleep had obviously claimed her. She would be asleep for a couple of days now and it was up to him to keep her secret to himself as she clearly didn't want anyone else to know.
Draco covered for Hermione the next couple of days telling Dumbledore and Madame Pomfrey that it was just a cold, not bad enough to go to the infirmary but enough to need a little rest and no bother. Draco watched over her mostly from a distance because of Slizor who lay on top of his mistress while she slept. When Hermione awoke Draco swiftly left the room leaving her notebook and another small package and bouquet of flowers on her bedside table.
Hermione checked to see that her notebook was undisturbed then she noticed the flowers and package. She had come to look forward to the messages and gifts. This time the gift was a silver and black notebook. Clearly this person knew she liked to write even if they didn't know what. Hermione immediately copied her favorite songs and stories into it. To her surprise the pages kept going. It was a never ending notebook. She was thrilled. It was perfect.
Everything continued well after that. Neither Hermione nor Draco mentioned the fact that Draco now knew about her being an elf althoug they both knew he did. Hermione continued to get flowers but no more packages although she didn't know why. Draco was planning something extra special. There was a Halloween ball planned and he was planning to invite her to come with him. It would be the test of whether or not his gifts had worked. On the morning of October 26th Hermione woke up to the weight of a large package on her legs. She opened it eagerly to find a single rose on top of a beautiful dress. It was strapless with silver at the top and below the waist it cut in a diagonal from her hip to her toes. The part that wasn't covered by the diagonal was black and there were silver elbow length ballroom gloves with it. All were made of silky material. There was a note with it:
Dearest Hermione,
I don't know where my feelings for you have been coming from, rest assured they are not because of your looks. I have been sending these gifts to you for a reason but I will not explain my reason until I have an answer to the question I ask here: Will you meet me in the entrance hall to be my partner at the ball. I will be wearing a matching costume. I was thinking we could go as Christine and Erik from The Phantom Of The Opera. If you wish to go I will be wearing the matching costume and a rose like the one I have given you.
Hoping you will say yes,
An Admirer
Hermione was very curious as to who this admirer was so she decided she would go. She could leave if it turned out to be a disaster and there was a costume contest. Christine and Eric would be a great costume to enter into it.
On Halloween Draco waited impatiently in the entrance hall to see her. He knew she would look good no matter what but- there she was. She had put her hair up and had a silver crown on. She was wearing the dress, bangles, and pendant as well as the rose he had given her. She was drop dead gorgeous. Draco donned his phantom mask and rose and went to meet her. Hermione's face went pale when she saw it was him. He dragged her into a spare classroom.
"Malfoy?!"
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you but I didn't think you would come. I- I don't really know what I am feeling towards you at the moment. Malfoys don't usually admit to this sort of thing but when I see you I go sort of all hard and soft inside. Please at least come with me to the ball. We don't have to go steady or anything." Hermione thought about saying no. After all, he had been horrible to her for a long time but then she thought to all the considerate things he had done for her lately and changed her mind.
"Alright. Let's go enter the costume contest." Draco beamed at her and for a moment Hermione thought that perhaps he wasn't so bad after all. He kept a tight hold on her hand all the way through the hall as though afraid she would disappear if he let go. They got strange stares. Hermione and Draco? What were the odds. Hermione was glad that Harry and Ron weren't there yet. They were going to raise a rucus. Dumbledore's eyes twinkeled at them as they wrote down their costumes on the contest list.
