The Professors Meeting

Chapter 4: The Professors Meeting

After the feast Dumbledore stood up and whispered to Sophia that he needed to talk to her in his office. He also whispered similar messages to Hagrid, Prof. McGonagall and Prof. Snape. Hagrid smiled and took a large gulp from his tankard, Minerva nodded gravely, but Snape, although he said nothing, looked particularly disgusted.

As they stood up to leave, Hermione came up to talk to Sophia.

“I’m so glad you are going to be a professor here! What levels are you teaching?” she asked.

“Are you taking Muggle Studies, Hermione? But you come from a muggle family. You could be teaching the class from what I’ve heard about some of the wizarding families.”

“That’s what Ron and Harry said. But it is interesting to study it from a different perspective, besides, Muggle History is a fascinating subject.”

“Aren’t they all...” Ron muttered behind her back. But she heard anyway, as she always does.

Sophia laughed, and when she shook her head, she noticed Snape staring at her and Hermione with intense hatred. She shivered under his cold gaze. She couldn’t help but feel that there was something a little freaky about the dark potions master.

“Don’t worry,” Hermione whispered, “everyone is scared of Prof. Snape.”

As she spoke, Snape’s gaze snapped to Hermione and narrowed into an even darker stare. ‘It is almost as if he can hear us, or read our thoughts,’ Sophia thought, ‘which, of course, wouldn’t be surprising...’

“I’ll catch you three later, I have to go see Dumbledore.” Sophia went outside the dining hall and stopped. The grand entrance led to a hallway full of staircases leading all sorts of directions. Hmmm, she had no idea where to go. Snape brushed past her with what she thought was a snicker, and quickly swept up the first set of stairs. Sophia contemplated following him, but remembered Hagrid’s advice to stay clear of him.

“Do you need help?” a voice said from behind her. Sophia turned around and saw Harry behind her.

“Yeah, I need to get to Dumbledore’s office. Any clue where that is?”

“Sure, I can take you there.” Sophia smiled at him, Harry was such a nice boy.

Harry whispered something at the statue that blocked the entrance to Dumbledore’s office, and the door opened. He led Sophia up the winding staircase and gestured to the sitting area around a roaring fire. Snape’s narrowed eyes flicked from Harry to Sophia, and back again.

“Thankyou Mr. Potter for leading Professor Aristides here.” Harry nodded and took his cue to go back down the stairs. “Please, Sophia, take a seat.” He gestured to an empty couch.

“The reason why I have asked you here is to explain to you Sophia’s presence at Hogwart’s this year, for, I will need all of your assistance at some point. Sophia’s parents are Viola and Plato Aristides.” He paused to let this sink in, obviously Minerva, Snape and Hagrid had all heard of them. “Sophia will play an important role in my plan to call our potential allies to us at our meeting in the Spring. She is not a squib, but due to her parents’ wishes, she was not taught magic, and will need all the help that she can get from you in order to catch up.” Dumbledore looked at his colleagues, but particularly at Snape, over the rim of his half-moon glasses as he said this.

“I’m not quite sure I understand myself what my role is to be in this meeting, Prof. Dumbledore.” Sophia said.

“I believe that will be fully explained when the time comes. In the meantime, my heart tells me that you will be important for summoning together the powerful creatures that will be coming to the meeting.”

“Creatures?” Sophia asked, “you mean there will be more than humans at this meeting?”

“There will be everything we can muster that might help us in the fight against Voldemort.”

“It is that bad, is it?”

“I”m afraid so,” Dumbledore answered.

“I don’t mean to question you, Professor Dumbledore, but shouldn’t this be kept secret?” She asked meekly, looking sideways at Snape.

“I assure you, Sophia, I would trust everyone in this room with my life.”

Sophia shrugged to herself, thinking ‘does he trust even that cold-hearted Snape who is at one point all friendly and flirty, and then the next minute looks like he wants to murder you...sheesh.’ Sophia stopped her thought process when she noticed Snape staring at her, once again as if he could read her thoughts.

“I’d suggest you get yourself a little more informed before you question my allegiance again, Miss Aristides.” Snape said, not looking at Sophia.

“Severus, please. I have not had time to fill Sophia in on every small detail. Perhaps you would be so kind as to do so?” Dumbledore’s eyes twinkled. That silenced Snape. He looked like he would rather kiss a hag than have a private discussion with her. Sophia sighed and made a mental note to find out what Snape’s story was.

“Perhaps you would like some basic charm coaching in the evenings, Miss Aristides?”

“That’d be lovely, thankyou Prof. McGonagall.” Sophia smiled, grateful for the change of topic.

“Please call me Minerva.”

“And you can call me Sophia, if you like.” She could already tell that she would get along with Minerva quite well.

“And I’d be happy to show you all the magical creatures we have at the castle whenever you like!” Hagrid said proudly.

Snape started to snicker, but he was silenced by a Look from Dumbledore.

“Really, Hagrid? That’d be fantastic! I am quite fond of animals.” Sophia was quite excited now.

“I’d like you to sit in on Prof. Flitwick’s first year Charm courses, as well as Prof. Ferro’s Defence Against the Dark Arts introductory course. You may also wish to speak to Mme. Hooch about flying lessons. I have asked one of the resident ghosts to give you a tour and introduce you to the rest of the staff. His name is Sir Nicholas. He will be looking for you at breakfast on Saturday morning.” Sophia nodded, “sounds great, Prof. Dumbledore. I look forward to learning more about magic.”

“If you know nothing about magic, then what do you actually...do, then, in the muggle world?” Snape asked.

“Actually I was a professor of folklore and ancient cults at a university in Scotland. And, believe me, the textbooks have it all wrong. Although I suppose that was the point, to mislead the ‘muggles’.” Everyone smiled and nodded at Sophia, except Snape. He crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes at her. Before he could say another word, Dumbledore dismissed the meeting.

“Severus, could I have a word with you please?” he asked Snape.

“Of course, Headmaster.” Dumbledore waited until the others had left, Hagrid leading Sophia to the Owlery chattering about all the different kinds of post owls.

“Now, Severus, I know that you do not trust people easily, and you especially dislike new people, but I must ask you to try your best to help this young lady. She is to play an important role in the war to come. And it is to our advantage that Voldemort does not know about her. Please, invite her to sit in on your potions classes. She is not stupid. I am sure she can catch on quickly. And she needs to be as prepared as possible.” Dumbledore looked so grave that Snape immediately nodded his acceptance.

“Inform her that she may sit in on any class she wishes.”

“Thankyou, Severus. I knew you’d be willing to help out.” Dumbledore grasped his hand warmly.

***

Severus Snape paced back and forth in his quarter's in the dungeon of Hogwart’s. Her presence was insufferable, and now he was going to have to endure her in his classes? He shook his head. No, she will be too much of a distraction. The students will never listen if she is there. And even I may be susceptible to distraction as well. Even now his pulse was still racing from their last meeting, and as he continued thinking about her Snape's ever-increasing groin was throbbing. He laid down on his small bed and wrapped his hands around himself. He closed his eyes and tried to will all thoughts of her out of his mind. It wasn't working, he kept unwillingly picturing her sitting astride him. With the images of Sophia and his hands, it did not take long for Severus Snape to release his tension in ecstacy.

'Much better,' Snape thought, satisfied with his personal solution to his lonely lifestyle, for now. He changed quickly and headed back to his duties of hallway patrol.
