Ginny Weasley was, to say the least, surprised when Hermione wobbled into her room and collapsed on the bed. She wasn't tired in a sleeping sort of way but her body and her spirit were worn to the bone. Ginny came over to her and reached out a hand to her but her friend flinched back so she withdrew it.
"Hermione what happened?" She asked but Hermione just shook her head.
"I'm not ready to talk about it Ginny. Can you get Harry and Ron for me please?" Ginny nodded and left the room for a moment before reappearing with Ron and Harry at her heels.
"Hermione where were you? We were so worried. The adults wouldn't tell us what was going on." Pain washed over Hermione again but she gritted her teeth and tried not to show it.
"It doesn't matter. I just have to tell you that I don't think I will be well enough to come on the-" She gave a sidelong glance at Ginny "-hunt with you." Ron and Harry were taken aback at her words.
"Hermione surely you don't mean that. Your face looks awful but other than that I can't see anything wrong with you." Harry said. Hermione sighed.
"Things are wrong with me Harry. Everything in the world is wrong with me." She said so softly that they had to lean close to hear. Ron perked up.
"Maybe you can go back to Hogwarts and do research for us. Hogwarts can be our base" Hermione thought and then nodded. She wondered why Ron was not acting mean towards her like he had at the beginning of the summer when she broke off their relationship but she shrugged it off as something she did not want to think about.
"I'll do it." She said. Then Draco walked into the room.
"What are you doing here ferret? Shouldn't you be sulking in your room?" Harry snarled.
"Harry don't. He was the one that rescued me." Harry looked startled
"But Mione why would he do that?"
"I don't know but you have to give him credit for it." Harry shrugged and he and Ron left the room. Ginny stayed silent on her bed.
"Mrs. Weasley is bringing you lunch." said Draco. He moved towards her but once again she flinched back. It was hard to be near another Malfoy so soon after what had happened. Draco saw the flinch and stopped where he was. He turned to Ginny. "Hey Red would you mind giving us a moment?" Ginny growled at the name.
"I don't need to. This is my room as much as it is Hermione's and stop calling me Red!" She snapped.
"Ginny please. You can stay just outside the door." Hermione said gently. Ginny rolled her eyes and stomped out of the room. Draco sat on the floor.
"So what was it you wanted to tell me Malfoy?" Hermione asked.
"You can call me Draco." He mumbled something else unintelligable.
"Sorry I didn't get that last bit." Draco took a deep breath.
"I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help you." Hermione was somewhat taken aback by this kind gesture.
"Malfoy,-"
"Draco"
"Fine Draco then, why are you suddenly acting so nice to me after six years of treating me like shit?" Draco fidgited.
"I don't know. I just know that something funny happened to me when I heard that you were kidnapped by death eaters. I just couldn't stand it somehow. I know I have given you no reason to trust me but maybe sometimes we could meet to do something fun together and I could earn your trust." Hermione thought for a moment.
"Alright but wait until I feel better." Draco was about to say something but was interrupted by a knock at the door. Draco opened it and Mrs. Weasley bustled into the room and began setting up Hermione's lunch. Draco silently slipped out of the room.
Strangely enough Mrs. Weasley didn't ask about what had happened to Hermione but she had a hunch that Draco might have had something to do with that. Hermione picked at the food and ate a few bites but despite the fact that she hadn't eaten in days she just had no appetite. Mrs. Weasley left the food there in case she got hungry but three hours later she came and took it away barely touched.
Days went by and Hermione got no better. She tended to her secret wounds in the middle of the night when everyone was asleep. The wounds were healing at an agonizing pace but the mark on her collarbone wasn't healing at all.
