Into The Unknown
Author's Note
I bet that some of you are wondering what I'm smoking as I'm writing this story. Well, I've read part of The Half-Blood Prince, and I got to wondering what would happen if someone stopped Severus from turning on Dumbledore. What would happen if someone stood in his way, someone too strong for him to handle. This is what I came up with. I hope you all enjoy.

Severus strode quickly past the assembly and knelt respectfully in front of Voldemort. “My Lord, I need to speak to you…in privacy, and at once.”
The dark wizard cast a curious look at his second-in-command and replied, “Very well, Severus. Let us talk then.”
The two wizards began walking away from the rest of the group. They both remained silent until they were certain they couldn’t be overheard.
“You look upset, Severus. What’s the matter?” Voldemort asked as he stopped and leaned against a tall grave marker.
“I need to ask you something, My Lord.” He said in a hushed tone, “Is there anywhere in America besides Morlott’s where magic is taught?”
The Dark Lord pondered the question for a moment, then replied, “Not that I’m aware of. Why do you ask?”
Severus drew in a deep breath then said, “This new professor at the school claims to be from America, and yet no one at Morlott’s has ever heard of her. When I tried to confront her about it, I was sent flying across the room and was completely paralyzed for over ten minutes. She didn’t use a wand or utter a single word. Have you ever witnessed such magic, My Lord?”
The Dark Lord’s expression became deadly serious. “No, I haven’t. Are you serious?”
Severus nodded. “I’m quite serious. What I saw her do isn’t supposed to be possible, is it?”
Voldemort went silent for a moment, and then replied, “No, it’s not supposed to be possible. There have been Witches and Wizards who could either do wandless or nonverbal magic, but never both. Even Merlin himself used a wand.”
The blood left Severus’ face, making him look even paler than usual. “I don’t know who or what she is, My Lord, but she’s extremely dangerous.”
“So it seems.” The Dark Lord agreed, “See if you can find out anything about her. Watch her closely. If she is indeed as powerful as you’re telling me, then we have a very worthy opponent on our hands.”
Severus gave a slight bow. “Yes, My Lord.”
“I see now why you didn’t want to tell me this in front of the others.” Voldemort said, “Keep this knowledge to yourself until we find out what we’re up against.”
He nodded. “Of course, My Lord. I’ll tell no one.”
“Let’s get back to the others.” The dark wizard advised, “They’ll be concerned if we take too long.”
Severus was in a very foul mood for the rest of the evening, but did his best to keep up appearances. Her words haunted him for some reason. She had spoken them as if she were giving an omen of something that was to come. It gave him a very bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.
When he arrived back at Hogwarts, he noticed that the door to her room was once again standing open. He wasn’t sure if he should approach her after what happened. He’d never been hexed that hard…ever! After thinking about the situation, he decided to go into his chambers instead. Angrily, he thumbed through his best magical texts, trying to find anything that would help explain what was going on. At half past midnight, he went to be empty-handed. There was nothing in his books to explain this Witch and what she could do. If Voldemort knew anything, he certainly wasn’t telling. He had grossly underestimated this Randi MacKenzie, a mistake he was not about to make again.
