The game between Puddlmere and the Cannons went on for 3 long, exciting and exhausting days. When the snitch was finally caught on the third day at 4:18 a.m. by the Cannon’s Jamie Selby almost everyone in the stadium was asleep, not to mention a couple of players on the pitch. When the Weasleys’ and there two charges made it back to the Burrow, Dumbledore was waiting outside, sucking on a blood pop. Even though Dumbledore looked normal enough Harry tensed with fear. He couldn’t help wondering if someone else had died by the wand of Voldemort or his insane Death Eaters. Strangely as Harry and the Weasley clan moved closer they saw a strange smile on Dumbledore’s face and that incessant twinkle in his eye. Something was up.
“Molly, Arthur, how are you?” Dumbledore smiled warmly at the Weasleys and they smiled back. Molly promptly asked the headmasters security question and when he answered correctly she nodded and invited him inside. After a small exchange of pleasantries about Fred and George’s shop and Ginny’s potential as Quidditch team captain Dumbledore asked if he could have a word with Harry. The ebony haired boy nodded and followed the Headmaster out of the Kitchen.
“Harry, m’boy. How is your summer going?” Harry smiled back at the old man.
“Fine sir, thank you. If I may ask, is something wrong?” Harry couldn’t help feel that Dumbledore might be delivering bad news.
“Well Harry, I’ve come across some information recently that has pushed me into action.” Harry shifted from one foot to the other nervously. “You see, just 1 month ago Lucius Malfoy came to me, near dead, looking for protection.” Harry sputtered in outrage.
“It’s a trick sir! You can’t believe him!” Dumbledore held up his hand to silence the younger man.
“Now Harry, I have administered the proper tests and have found Lucius and his family trustworthy. They are in fear for their lives Harry, simply because they can no longer agree with Voldemort. Before you say anything let me just say that every man who is not standing with us Harry, is standing against us, and vice versa.”
“Okay. But the Malfoys, sir?”
“Harry they need The Orders help. Lucius and Narcissa are not afraid for themselves, they are afraid for Draco.”
“What about him?” Harry had to ask, the old man had gotten his attention. Why would they be afraid for that little Death Eater in training? /I bet Malfoy is just furious at them for not letting him join the ranks./ Dumbledore seemed to have read his mind.
“Draco is a young man Harry. Not that much older than you. I admit you shouldn’t have to be in the middle of this war Harry, and I’m sorry you are, but neither should he. Also it has come to my attention that Draco might be a ‘special’ case.” /What? When did Draco get preferential treatment?/ “As you may or may not have known Harry, Draco Malfoy had his 17th birthday 3 days ago.”
“Why is that important sir?” Harry was having a hard time hiding his outrage.
“It is important because on his 17th birthday Draco came into an inheritance of sorts. It turns out that Mr. Malfoy is indeed half vampire and an eighteenth Veela. I’m sure you’ve heard of both these magical creatures Harry.” The headmaster was met with a second of shocked silence.
“Yes but, he’s not a pureblood?”
“Evidently not.” There was Dumbledore’s mischievous twinkle again.
“I’m sorry sir, but what exactly does this have to do with me?”
“Well since you’ve decided that you will be returning to Grimmauld Place when you leave the Burrow, I was hoping you wouldn’t mind a bit of company.”
“You mean the Malfoys?!? At Grimmauld Place? No absolutely not. There horrible and- and Sirius hated them.”
“Not all of them would stay with you Harry, just Draco. And as for Sirius, he may have disliked the Malfoys, but he hated Voldemort. Draco is not safe where he is and Grimmauld Place would be a perfect place for him to lay low until the school year begins.” Harry eyes flashed with anger.
“Why can’t he stay at the school then?”
“Voldemort would find out and as it is he doesn’t know the Malfoys have contacted me, he simply thinks they’re in hiding. It would look strange if Draco returned to school early. I also think it would be best Voldemort does not know the Malfoys have come to me until the latest possible moment.”
“But-but what if it’s all a lie?”
“I trust them.” With the bearded wizards response Harry’s head fell forward in defeat.
“Well I guess it would be alright then.” Dumbledore’s face lit up; apparently he had known he would be in for a hard time trying to convince the boy. After discussing why Harry should not tell his friends of Malfoys specific conditions until Draco was comfortable enough to tell people himself, they walked back to the Burrow, each lost in his own thoughts.

“Mate, they can’t make you do that!” Ron’s face was the color of his hair.
“Yes Ron, they can.” Harry sighed for what seemed like the hundredth time that evening.
“But living with the ferret, all alone!?! That’ll be a bloody nightmare!”
“You know Ron, members of the order are always there, popping in and out, so Harry won’t really have to be alone with Malfoy all that much.” Ron twisted his head to look at Hermione, who had not spoken since Harry had made his announcement.
“You don’t think this could be a good idea do you? You’re mad, you know that?”
“No Ronald, I’ve just been thinking is all.” She chewed her lip before she continued, “maybe we all need to finally figure out how to get along. Obviously the Malfoys aren’t as bad as we all thought they were. I mean yes, Malfoy is a horrible, terrible…filthy cockroach of a boy really. But he’s not a murderer Ron and his parents don’t want him to become one either.” Ron just stared at her in shock.
Hermione had made Harry think. /What if this is the truth? Malfoy is half vampire, they are extremely powerful creatures, can we really risk ostracizing one?/ He excused himself while they bickered and went to the room he shared with Ron and laid down. Staring at the ceiling he wondered if Hermione wasn’t right. /Why does Draco always have to mess good things up?!? Stupid Ferret!/
