Decisions

Decisions

Healer Moore was a staunch older gentleman, old enough to be Ginny’s grandfather, in fact. Ginny looked up to him a great deal, as he was one of the most respected Healers in Britain. She only hoped that his reason for calling her to his office had nothing to do with the subtle passes he had been making at her. After all, she admired the man, but was certainly not attracted to him.

She made her way to his office, her white rubber soles squeaking on the stark linoleum. She gripped her wand a little tighter in the front pocket of her apron as she softly knocked on the heavy wooden door.

“Yes, come in, Miss Weasley,” she heard his gentle voice call from within.

He must have a sensor ward on his quarters, she thought absently as she turned the brass knob.

“You wanted to see me?” she inquired, stepping into the dimly lit room.

“Ah, yes, Miss Weasley. Please, have a seat,” he said, beckoning to a very comfortable looking armchair in front of his mahogany desk.

Ginny crossed the moss colored carpet and felt the cracked leather creak beneath her as she took a seat.

“We are opening a St. Mungo’s in the states, New York to be more precise,” he said, looking at her brightly. “You’ve been doing so well for us here, that I have decided to offer you a position in the Spell Damage department at the new hospital.”

Ginny looked stunned. She had certainly not expected to be offered a promotion in her first year.

“That would be quite the commute, Sir,” she said a little dazedly.

“Well, that is another thing about the position, Miss Weasley. You would be taking up the post as head of the department----”

“But sir! I am only a first year Healer, surely I’m not-----”

“Nonsense, Miss Weasley. Your skills are exemplary! I can think of no one better for the job. There are only a few small requirements for taking the job. The first being that you would of course need to relocate to a home closer to the new hospital. As head of the department, you will need to be able to apparate to the hospital in an instant if needed, and an apparation from Britain to New York takes near of an hour.”

“But Sir! Move? To the states? Why, I don’t know, I---”

“Think about it, Miss Weasley. I should also mention that your wages will be nearly doubled in this new position. Take your leave after lunch, discuss it with your family, and let me know by the end of the week what you decide. Oh, and Miss Weasley?” He said as she was rising from the chair.

“Yes sir?”

“While I do believe you are the best for this position, do not dawdle in your decision, for there are many applicants who would be well qualified for the position.”

Ginny nodded and turned to leave the room, feeling the older man’s gaze on her soft curves as she walked away.

Ginny passed through the remainder of her shift in a haze. She could scarcely believe what was happening. This was the job opportunity of a lifetime, but could she really leave her family behind and move to the states? She would definitely need to think about this some more, and she would need to talk to her mother and father.

She picked at her lunch at the Leaky Cauldron. She knew her father would not approve of his only daughter moving so far away, but she wondered how her mother would react to the news.

Harry walked down the street with his partner, Roger. They were taking their lunch and decided to explore muggle Brooklyn.

“Did you hear about the new St. Mungo’s they’re building up on Fourth?” Roger asked.

“No, no I hadn’t. When is that opening?” Harry asked him.

The opening of a new hospital would bring more witches and wizards to the area, which undoubtedly would mean higher levels of crime, and an increase in their workload.

“In two weeks, I heard them say. They’re bringing in lots of new healers from all over. Likely some nice tail in the bunch,” he remarked, giving Harry a spirited elbow in the ribs.

“You know, I am starting to think perhaps I should settle down a bit. Maybe pick one girl, and date her more than once. I mean, we’re not in auror school anymore. It might be nice to think about having a family,” Harry said earnestly.

“You’re joking, right?” Roger snorted.

Harry’s face fell a little.

“Yeah, yeah of course I am. Don’t be ridiculous, Roger, honestly,” he said, mustering a laugh.

“Good, cause the idea of Playboy Harry Potter settling down could only be a joke,” Roger said.

Harry looked away.

“Yeah, you’re right about that,” he said softly.

“Come on, let’s head back to the barn. Didn’t you say you were leaving early today?”

“Oh, yes, I have plans in London,” Harry replied absently.

“I take it that means you will be spending your day off there as well?”

“Yes. London is an hour’s apparation away.”

“I hope you enjoy it,” Roger said as they made their way back to the barn.

Ginny took a deep breath as she tread the familiar path to the front door of The Burrow. She had been able to think of nothing else all day, and she knew that she could never make a decision like this without at least seeing what her parents had to say about it.

She entered the kitchen where her mother was beginning to prepare supper.

“Hello, Dear. I am making your favorite tonight. It was such a delight to hear you were coming,” Mrs. Weasley said warmly.

“Hello, Mum. Actually before we eat, there’s something I would like to talk with you and Dad about,” she said nervously.

“Oh, Dear, you’re not pregnant are you? Because last time I checked you are not married, young lady---”

“Oh, no, Mum, nothing like that,” Ginny said, chuckling nervously.

“Alright, then, we’ll wait for your father. He’ll be home any minute.

Ginny nodded and made her way to the cabinet for a glass. As she filled her glass with pumpkin juice from the tip of her wand, Arthur Weasley entered the kitchen.

“Well, hello, Ginny. What a nice surprise,” he remarked, giving her shoulder a squeeze.

“Hello, Dad,” she replied nervously.

“Ginny says she has something to talk to us about, Dear” Molly said.

“Oh no, you’re not pregnant, are you? Because if you are----”

“No, Dad. It’s nothing like that,” she replied.

“Well, then let’s go sit down and talk,” Molly suggested.

The other two nodded and followed her into the parlor.

“So, Ginny, what’s this all about?” Arthur asked when they were all seated.

“I was offered a job as head of Spell Damage at St. Mungo’s,” Ginny began.

“Why, Dear, that’s wonderful!” Molly crooned.

“Yes, congratulations!” Arthur offered.

“Well, the job is at the new St. Mungo’s---”

New St. Mungo’s, Dear?”

“Yes, Mum. They’re building a new St. Mungo’s in the states, in New York,” she said sheepishly.

“Well that’s an awful commute,” Arthur said. “It’s near of an hour each way.”

“Well that’s the thing. As the head of the department, I would need to be available within moments, so if I take this job, I will have to move to New York,” Ginny said, a bit rushed, face coloring.

“Move? To New York?” Molly said, aghast.

“Now, darling, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our Ginny, let’s just be happy for her,” Arthur said, much to Ginny’s surprise.

“Yes, I suppose you’re right, Dear. Ginny, is this what you want?”

“Well, I uh-” Ginny began, clearing her throat. “I think maybe it is. The increase in pay is very lovely, and it really would be fun to live in a new place. The apparation is only an hour….which is really not that long, I could come and visit every month at least.”

Molly’s face relaxed visibly.

“Well then I think this would be a wonderful opportunity for you,” she said warmly, hugging her daughter.

“I’ll tell Healer Moore in the morning that I accept the position, then,” Ginny said, relieved that her parents would be supportive.

“Just promise to visit, Dear,” Molly said.

“Of course, Mum, and you can come visit me, too,” Ginny replied, feeling better about the whole situation.

Perhaps this would be her way of finally getting over Harry. She could start anew in a place where there were no reminders of their love. Yes, this was going to be very good for her indeed.
