Chapter 3
Severus saw the storm brewing. Draco had just callously used the same sort of comment that had so irked her just a few moments ago. He watched amusement twinkle in Draco’s eyes, actually saw the boy looking for a harsher insult to throw at Miss Granger. He also saw the indignation and anger burning pink across her cheeks. He would need a course of action for the next several days; that was something he could contemplate. But for now, he needed to dispel this situation, and fast.
“Hermione Granger, this is Draco Malfoy. You and he were students together. He is my companion. I am Severus Snape; I was both yours and Draco’s Professor for a time,” he said smoothly, calmly, attempting to use a voice that would both placate Miss Granger and warn Draco.
Draco stood still for a moment, looking back and forth between Severus and Granger. Then awareness settled on his features.
“She doesn’t remember? How much does she not remember?” he questioned, his tone growing almost gleeful.
“Miss Granger’s accident has unfortunately left her with complete and hopefully, temporary memory loss. It is clear through the conversation we were having prior to your arrival that she still retains a sense of herself...she just hasn’t enough recollection of her past to put things into any context.” Snape finished his speech and then smiled reassuringly, he hoped, at Miss Granger.
“Miss Granger, would you like some water and a towel? There is a washroom just down the hall. We don’t have electricity, so I regret to inform you that the water will be cold. However it may give you a moment to collect yourself.” He watched her, waiting for her to gather her wits enough after the shock of the last few moments.
She opened and shut her mouth several times, as though trying to catch the words that she wanted to say. He was slightly put off by this action, though he tried not to allow it to register on his face. He had always found her to be at best an annoying slip of a girl, an attention grabbing do-gooder with a penchant for following others into trouble, but he had not yet found her fatuous as he did most of his students. If there was one thing that made his skin crawl, it was people who had no self-control, including that of their emotions. Her reaction was showing him that she was, in fact, as easily ruffled and confused as anyone else. Pity, he hated to lose his respect for someone once they had gained it.
Suddenly, he watched her eyebrows knit together and then rise as though in shock and amusement. Her mouth formed the letter before her voice spoke the word.
“Oh,” she gasped out.
Severus looked at her questioningly. Draco was still trying to understand what the implications of the girl losing her memory might be.
“You mean, you and he,” her hand waved for a moment in the direction of Severus, and then Draco, as her eyes went back and forth between the two, “you and he are...partners?”
“Miss Granger!” snapped out Severus, his brows knitting as his eyes opened wide in shock.
“Ugh, Granger; too far!” Draco grimaced.
Severus cleared his throat and closed his eyes for a moment.
“No, Miss Granger. Perhaps I was not clear. We are roommates; that is all. I believe you should go wash up and find something more suitable to put on for conversation. I can’t very well have a serious conversation with you regarding what I know of your past if you continue to walk around in my nightshirt which is decidedly too large for you. Please, if you don’t mind?” He indicated the nightshirt, one shoulder of which was dropping down her arm, and then pointed in the direction of the hallway.
She looked from one to the other, grabbing the collar of the shirt and pulling it tighter around her throat, huffed once in her irritation at being dismissed, then picked up the sack that Draco had tossed so unceremoniously at her and strode down the hallway, head high and chin out.
Severus waited to hear the door close and then turned to Draco.
“This is an interesting dilemma in which we find ourselves. Though we can assume she came for us, we don’t really know her intentions, or how she came to be here. Nor, for that matter, does she. I think that I will have to ask you to leave the room while I discuss with her some of her past. I do think it would be prudent for both of us to try and treat her well, don’t you? Her memory could come back at any moment, and we will have to have tried to gain her trust before she remembers why she...”
He was interrupted by the creak of a floorboard in the hallway, and Severus looked over to see Miss Granger standing, eyes narrowed, in the entryway to the room. She immediately changed her expression to one of embarrassment.
“Sorry, I...there wasn’t a candle in the washroom.” She scurried across the room, grabbing one of the candles, and then shot both of them mistrusting looks as she disappeared down the hallway again.
“Oh, well done, Snape! Shouldn’t be too difficult to gain her faith now that she knows we are plotting to try to do so. Why don’t you just run down the hallway and tell her why we have been hiding out here? Why we don’t use any magic?” Draco’s voice was laced with sarcasm. “Oh, hang on! Do you think she remembers she’s a witch? Wouldn’t that be fascinating if she had reverted back to thinking she’s a Muggle? We could definitely do something with that, couldn’t we?”
Severus closed his eyes in an attempt to keep Draco from realizing he was rolling them and then rubbed at his forehead. This boy had still not learned the fine art of subtle manipulation.
“Malfoy, I think it best if you find something else to occupy your time whilst I speak with Miss Granger. I don’t care what you do, just don’t do it here,” he said tiredly, his eyes still shut tight.
“Fine, dismiss me. But don’t expect me to help you if you don’t let me in on what you’re planning. I may just plot my own manipulations for the Mudblood. We’ve been on our own an awfully long time.” With that Draco stood, smoothed out the creases in his slacks and strode down the hall, slamming the door to his room.
Still rubbing his forehead, Severus sighed heavily. The day was only going to get worse.
