Eating Crow
~~~~Eating Crow~~~~
Life has a funny way of making sure all your past sins come back to bite you on the arse, hence the creation of the Golden Rule. Draco, however, had been raised by what Lucius liked to call the Platinum Rule.
"Do unto others especially before they do unto you." he would say to his six year old son.
And until recently he'd believed that and everything else his father told him as the absolute truth. Which is why Draco was now in his current predicament. He'd never gotten along with Weasley and okay insulting Granger hadn't been the greatest of moves. However, that was before, surely they would have been mature enough to see past that. All he had to do was smooth over a few ruffled feathers. Right?
Wrong!
Draco had been quite proud of himself really. When he'd seen Granger with her books strewn all about after being tripped, Draco hadn't kicked not one book farther down the hallway. NOT ONE! He'd even pointed out the one in the corner she'd missed. Did she thank him? Nnooooo!
When he'd sent her an owl saying that she wasn't that bad for a muggle born, he'd thought for sure it was a stroke of genius. In her return owl her reply hadn't been very lady like. After all, he was just trying to do something generous and she'd told him do go do something to himself that he was quite sure was physically impossible, even with magic.
Then there was Weasley! Draco could have been up for saint hood from all the times he'd not hexed that idiot. Hell, he'd even refrained from taking verbal shots at the weasel for two weeks. TWO WEEKS! Seriously there was just so much to work with, one scarcely knew what to insult first and Draco hadn't said one word.
But had Harry or anyone else noticed? No, all they saw was the same old Malfoy. So, here he was in the library, staring at the object of his affections and couldn't even think of one bloody way to get past his two guard dogs. The blonde sighed and continued to gaze longingly over his book as he plotted.
This was going to take a lot longer than he thought.
Harry had yet to return his supposed mate's scroll to Trelawney. He knew he needed to give it back but he just wanted to hold on to it for a bit longer. They were in the library now and he was supposed to be reading up on the exciting life of the rabbit foot catus and how it could be used. Instead he was reading the scroll again just so he could try to figure out the author. It wasn't like he believed this stuff or anything but he was curious to see who had written about him. At least that is what he kept telling himself over and over again for the past two weeks.
If only to himself, he'd admit the truth. Harry really wanted to meet the man, who with a few words, had managed to worm his way into his thoughts and even his dreams. The previous nights were filled with images of the kind of life they'd share and he wanted that life. Didn't he deserve some happiness? Even monsters got a companion! Why couldn't an abomination like him have one?
Harry knew he shouldn't think of himself in such terms but after hearing it nearly all of his life it was hard not to. Here in this scroll, however, was someone who thought him an angel. To his mate he was someone to be loved and maybe even cherished for all of time. And he wanted that, DAMN IT! He needed it. It was becoming an obsession. He had to know for sure that it wasn't his mind imagining things.
The key he knew would be to break the encryption spell placed on the scroll. Then he'd know for sure and could put the whole mess behind him. He ignored his first instinct to show Hermione and ask how to break the spell on it as that would lead to questions Harry wasn't sure he was willing or able to answer. It would take longer but he was determined to do it and it would be kind of nice to solve it on his own.
He hoped...
A/N: I only had a five minute break at work and my muses were chatty. With that in mind, I wrote this and posted it as is. Hope you enjoy it. I'll try to get more time so I can write longer chapters soon.
On a side note: Even though I swore I wouldn't do this, I'm starting a update list. So if you want to be added to it shoot me an email. Please don't put them in the reviews as they might get missed.
