Chapter four: Friends!
Waking up with Harry’s body tangled around his, was a dream come true for Draco. They had fallen asleep facing each other, which Draco took full advantage of now as he stared at Harry’s relaxed, sleeping face. Harry was truly beautiful, and it was all natural beauty, not the kind of perfection that took hours in front of a mirror.
Draco watched as Harry slowly opened his eyes, blinking a couple of times before sweetly smiling at Draco.
“Morning,” Draco whispered, not wanting to disturb the silence of the house.
“Morning,” Harry whispered back.
The two snuggled closer. A confused expression melted itself onto Harry’s face.
“Draco?” said Harry.
“Umm?” Draco replied, his face buried in Harry’s chest, the soft skin touching his forehead.
“How did you know I was freaked out about being… you know? I don’t believe I ever told you that,” Harry had been pondering about this all night.
“You didn’t have to, Harry, it was written all over you. Every time we would got closer, you would stutter out excuses and run off. You always tried to talk about girls a lot when I was around, that and other stuff told me how freaked out you were,” Draco answered.
“That obvious, was I?” said Harry.
Draco pulled his head back to look as Harry’s face. “Just to me,” he said.
Harry smiled and gently placed his lips on Draco’s, shuffling himself closer to the blond, he let his body rub up against Draco’s. They kissed deeply for a while, just being content to be lying next to each other,
Suddenly, both boys jumped as they heard a loud CRASH from downstairs. Harry was getting up and reaching for his wand, when he heard a familiar, loud voice say, “damn, not again!”
“Neville, still as clumsy as ever then?” Draco smiled; he and Neville had gotten on well during their seventh year and had formed a friendship. It had disappointed the blond when none of the people he had considered friends during that last year had gotten into contact with him. Harry he could understand, but he thought at least Neville would have kept in touch.
“Yeah, we should go down, make sure everything is okay,” said Harry. Both boys pulled on their clothes, having slept in their boxers, and headed downstairs.
“Everything alright, Neville?” Harry asked, as he entered the kitchen.
“Harry,” Neville beamed. “Yeah, everything’s fine, just broke another dish, that’s the second one this week.”
Neville turned towards Draco, “It’s good to see you again, Draco.” Neville than pulled the blond into a friendly hug. Pulling away he said, “So, what do you guys want for breakfast?”
After the three boys had eaten, and Neville had cleared away the dishes, Harry went to Firecall his boss to give him an update.
“So, you finally asked Luna to marry you then?” Draco asked, as Neville sat back down at the table.
“Yes, being apart from her, while she was finishing school, was awful. It felt like apart of me was missing,” Neville replied.
“I know what you mean,” said Draco, his eyes glancing towards the doorway Harry had left through, only moments ago.
“You still love him then?” asked Neville, as he followed the blonds gaze. Draco had confined in Neville about his love for Harry during their last year. It had felt good to finally tell somebody. Neville had never told anyone, even to this day, that he knew of Draco’s feelings for Harry. Draco nodded.
Not knowing what else to say, Neville asked something he had wanted to know the answer to for over a year. “Why did you leave King’s Cross without saying goodbye?” he asked.
“I was avoiding Harry. He made it perfectly clear that he did not want me around, so I left,” replied Draco. He knew this topic would be brought up if he ever saw these people again. He did truly regret not seeing everybody one last time at the train station that day.
“Without even saying goodbye to your friends?” Neville snapped.
“You’re all Harry’s friends, not mine. None of you would have given me the time of day, had I not formed an alliance with Harry,” Draco bit back.
“That’s probably true, but Draco, I considered you a friend, and so did all the others. You became one of us, Draco, the least you could have done was say goodbye. Even if you never wanted to see us again,” Neville’s voice had risen slightly and the anger was turning his face a faint red colour.
“What? When did I say I never wanted to see you all again? And it’s not like any of you made the effort to get into contact with me,” Draco could feel his own anger rising, anger that had been slowly simmering for over a year.
“Because you never told us where you were. How are we meant to send an owl without an address? And nobody tried to find you, because everyone assumed you didn’t want us to,” reciprocated Neville.
Draco slumped in his chair with a sigh, letting the anger pour out of him. He wasn’t in the mood for an argument. “Of course I wanted to keep in touch. I missed you guys, you, Luna, Dean, and Ginny. You were good friends to me during our final year. I don’t think I would have coped without you guys and Harry. Hell, I was even starting to consider Weasley and Granger as friends. I even thought they were starting to trust me,” he explained.
“They did trust you, Draco. It was just hard for them to adjust to the new you. I mean, you were horrible to them for five years,” Neville said, he too was beginning to calm down.
“I’m sorry I just left when we got to King’s Cross. I wasn’t thinking straight and I really didn’t want to bump into Harry,” said Draco.
“Apology accepted,” replied Neville, “and I’m sorry I didn’t try harder last year to find out were you were. I missed having you to talk to. You’re a good friend to have, Draco.”
“Thanks,” Draco smiled. The two sat in silence for a few minutes. Harry still hadn’t returned from Firecalling his boss.
“You missed out Seamus,” Neville suddenly said.
“What?” replied Draco, puzzled.
“When you listed your friends, you missed out Seamus,” Neville clarified.
“Oh,” Draco said, he could fell his cheeks burning slightly and his eyes had widened. “Urm, well… Seamus was a good friend too.”
Neville nodded as they fell back into a comfortable silence and Draco breathed a sigh of relief. That was close, he thought Neville might have known something, but obviously, he didn’t, thankfully.
When Harry returned, ten minutes later, Neville and Draco were having a friendly spat about the last Quidditch game the Chudley Cannons had played. He stood in the doorway, watching as Draco laughed, throwing his head back slightly and his eyes crinkling. It was then that it really hit Harry, he had been really stupid that night on the Astronomy Tower.
“What do you think, Harry?” Neville called to him, when he had finally realised the other boy was standing there. “The Cannons new chaser any good?”
Harry joined the other two at the table and the three sat discussing Quidditch for quite awhile, until Neville was doing nothing but yawning.
“Did you sleep at all last night, Nev?” Draco asked, as Neville yawned for the tenth time in five minutes.
“No, I only just got in before I started making breakfast,” he replied, yawning yet again.
“Bed. Now. Longbottom,” Draco demanded, causing Harry to chuckle as his stubborn, but friendly, manner.
“Yes boss, night, or should I say morning?” Neville replied as he got up and left the room.
They heard the other boy slump up the stairs and shut his bedroom door.
“Tea?” Harry asked and Draco nodded.
“So, what did your boss have to say? Anything interesting?” Draco asked, as he watched Harry prepare the tea.
“Not really, I was a long time because he was giving me a lecture about some overdue paperwork from my last case,” Harry replied. He poured the tea and the two boys moved into the living room. Neither one had brought up the subject of their relationship nor what the previous night had meant, both waiting for the other to bring up the topic.
Neither boy had yet to speak, when the fireplace roared and Luna climbed out, brushing soot off her robes with her hands.
“Hi,” she smiled, at the two boys. “Is Neville home yet?”
“Yes, we’ve just sent him to bed,” Draco answered. Luna pulled off her cloak and took a seat next to him on the sofa.
Harry, who was sat on the chair opposite, asked, “You had a good morning at work?”
Luna sighed, “I don’t know how my father coped, running that place is a nightmare.”
Harry chuckled. Luna may complain, but Harry knew she wouldn’t give up The Quibbler for anything, except maybe Neville.
Luna sighed again, “Well, I better start getting dinner ready, there will be seven of us, after all.”
“Seven?” both Harry and Draco exclaimed, with bewildered looks on their faces.
“Yes, you two, me, Neville, Dean, Ginny and Seamus,” she said, as she took off for the kitchen.
Harry smiled, turning back to Draco, “I haven’t seen Seamus for ages, and it’ll be good to catch up with him. Dean and Ginny too.”
“Yeah… great,” Draco replied, gravely. He wasn’t looking forward to the others arriving. Dean and Ginny he didn’t mind. Seamus, on the other hand, was another matter.
