Chapter 4
Severus woke early on the morn of the Hogsmeade weekend. After getting dressed, he spent the time before breakfast pacing his room, thinking. He knew Hermione would try her best to meet him. The fact that she had tried sneaking to his rooms a few nights before proved that. He wasn’t worried about her being unable to slip away from Potter. The little Weasley girl had him pretty well wrapped around her finger. The girl’s brother however, could be a problem. He and Hermione had remained close friends, and other than Potter, the boy was really close to no one else. His brothers were all older and busy with their own affairs. Snape sighed. He would just have to trust in Hermione’s ingenuity. Surely she was bright enough to manage to lose Weasley somehow.
As indeed she was. Hermione had sent an owl to Ron’s twin brothers the night before. Fred and George were currently staying at their newest joke shop in Hogsmeade.
Dear Fred and George,
I don’t know if you are aware of it, but Ron and I have mutually decided to end our engagement. We are still and will always be friends, but we realized that the love we have for each other, though deep, is not the kind of love that a married couple should share.
Even though this was a mutual decision, it has still been hard on us both. Could you possibly meet Ron Saturday morning on his way to Hogsmeade? I think spending the day with family would do much to cheer him up. And of course the two of you have the keenest sense of humor in the family.
Love,
Hermione
Snape observed Hermione closely over breakfast, grateful for his voluminous robes that hid the evidence of his arousal. She looked lovely and fresh in her white blouse and blue skirt. She also looked very eager and excited. She could barely sit still, and the one time she allowed herself a glance at him, the beaming smile she gave him stole his breath away. He hoped her joy this morning was because she had found a way of getting away from the two nuisances she called friends.
When Hermione caught sight of the two vivid red heads coming towards them on the path to Hogsmeade, her heart leaped. They had done as she asked! Of course, she had had little doubt that they would. The twins might torment and tease Ron unmercifully, but the Weasleys were a close-knit family. Ron’s brothers loved him unconditionally, and would do anything for him.
“Hello, you lot,” Fred said as they drew close, beaming at Hermione, Ron, Harry, and Ginny. Hermione was relieved to see his smile. She loved the Weasleys and had been afraid that they would be cool to her because of the breakup. Clearly this wasn’t to be the case.
“What are you two doing here?” Ron asked.
“What, we can’t decide that we want to spend the day with our ickle brother?” George grinned.
“Yeah, it’s been too long since we had a good laugh at your expense,” Fred added, grinning just as broadly.
“So come on, Ron,” George said. “We’re going to hit every pub in Hogsmeade today.”
“What, all two of them? Where will we find the time?” Ron asked as his brothers each took an arm and marched off with him.
“What was all that about?” Ginny asked.
“Dunno,” Harry shrugged. “But it looks like it’s just the three of us today.”
“No,” Hermione said. “You two go on and enjoy some time by yourselves. Unless you fancy spending the day in the bookshops.”
Harry winced, but said, “Are you sure, Hermione? We don’t mind if you hang around.” Ginny nodded.
“Positive, Harry. Now, go on, you two. Have a real date for once.”
Harry kissed her on the cheek. “Thanks, ‘Mione. We’ll see you tonight.”
Ginny gave her a brief hug. “Have fun in your bookshops!”
“I’ll have fun,” Hermione replied. “Now go!” Laughing, she watched the two of them hurry towards the village, and slowed her steps so that she would be out of their sight sooner. She had no intention of going all the way to Hogsmeade village when she could skirt around it and reach the Shrieking Shack. Her heart began to beat faster as she thought of who awaited her there.
Severus had not been idle whilst he waited for his Hermione. The bedroom of the Shrieking Shack had been transformed. Black silk hangings covered the bare wooden walls, the bed had been repaired and cleaned, and the floor had been covered in black carpeting. He surveyed his work with a critical eye, satisfying himself that he had done all he could to make the place fit for his woman. He could think of nothing else to do, so he left the room and went down the stairs to wait at the door, to watch for her arrival.
He peered out the dirty window of the front door, but saw nothing except a few fourth years some distance away, scaring each other about the supposedly haunted dwelling. No sign of Hermione. Damn! Then he saw movement in the trees just behind the students who were jokingly pushing each other toward the Shack. Could it be…yes! He caught a glimpse of blue and white. It had to be Hermione. But how was she going to get past the fourth years?
With an evil gleam in his eyes he opened the door just a crack, not enough to be noticed by the students. Pointing his wand at a spot a few yards in front of the laughing students, he conjured a small dust devil. When the students caught sight of it, their joking stopped immediately. Their eyes flicked from it to the Shack. When the dust devil started moving towards them, they backed away slowly, trying to keep their calm, but when it sped up, picking up more leaves, dead grass, and dust, and started moving in figure 8 patterns, always closer and closer, their nerves broke and they fled, screaming. Hermione shrank back farther in the trees as they passed, but she need not have worried. They probably wouldn’t have seen her if she had been standing in plain view wearing nothing but a smile.
As soon as they were out of sight, the dust devil vanished. Hermione smiled. She knew exactly who had conjured it, and it was no ghost. Coming out from her hiding place, she saw the front door swing open, and a pale hand beckon her. Her heart was beating like mad, intense thrills of desire kept shooting through her body. For a moment she couldn’t move; she felt like someone had used Immobulous on her. When the hand beckoned her a second time, however, she shook off the paralysis and began to run.
