Chapter four

When Ron and Harry entered the pub, Hermione and Draco had already sat down. She waved them over and they obeyed. Harry had to know what was going on with her, the same with Ron.

“Alright…” Harry said, sitting down. “What’s going on?” he asked sternly.

“Furie…” Hermione mumbled.

“Huh?’ Ron asked.

“Here we go…maybe we should go upstairs or something?” Draco suggested, motioning to the patrons around them.

“Good idea…” Hermione agreed.

“So…explain.” Ron said, sitting on the bed.

“Okay…”she sighed, looking at Draco. he nodded in permission.

“Have you guys ever heard of Erinnyes?” she asked.

“No…” Harry replied curiously.

“The name Erinyes or Erinnyes means "angry ones". They’re three female hag-like creatures who have the head of a dog, snakes for hair and bat wings. They are often depicted as carrying a torch or a whip. They were also known in Greek myth as the Furies. There were two possible origins for the Furies. In one account, they sprung from the blood of the castrated Uranus. In another version, they were mothered by Gæa with air and bad human emotions. Either way, their purpose is the same: to pursue and torment guilty people. They chase them and cause horrible deaths. Because of this, they cannot die while sin exists. The three Furies are named Alecto, Tisiphone, Megaera. Sometimes the Erinnyes are called Eumenides which means "kindly ones" as it is bad luck to say their real name.” Hermione said all in one breath.

“Right…no time for history Hermione, just tell us what’s up!” Ron wined impatiently.

“My grandmother, Megaera, is one of the three Furies…the only thing is, her blood skipped two generations and hit me instead…” she explained.

“So you’re a walking, talking, living, tormenter? Is that what you’re trying to tell us?” Harry asked, disbelievingly.

“Yes…and the reason I bought Osiris is because it’s in my nature. I’m telling you this now, because somehow it’s backfired. I’m not to torment the guilty…I’m to torment the innocent.” Hermione said softly.

Harry and Ron mulled it over for a second, “Then what are you doing hanging around him?” Harry asked.

“Draco and his family…I have to protect them from you Harry…and…Voldemort. I’m sorry Harry, Ron! I didn’t mean for this to happen! Please forgive me! If I hurt you…please don’t hate me! I’m so sorry!” Hermione wept, leaping onto Harry and Ron.

They made a sort of ‘umph’ noise as she collided with them.

“Uh…okay. Doesn’t matter what you do-not unlimited-we’ll still consider you a friend.” Ron said, patting her back.

“Yeah, Mione. If you hurt us…we’ll hurt you back.” Harry joked.

She released herself from them, “That’s not possible…you can’t kill a Furie as long as sin exists! Weren’t you listening? And since there is so much of it…I’ll never die!” she yelled desperately.

“Never?” Ron gulped.

“Never!” Hermione wailed.

Osiris leapt into Hermione’s arms as she cried. Osiris let out his peaceful and gentle wave of music. Hermione almost instantly stopped crying. She petted him as he looked up into her eyes. She smiled and cuddled him. She winced as one of his spikes scratched her.

“You little devil, you.” She whispered, putting him down.

“Okay…still weirded out. Does Dumbledore know all of this?” Harry asked.

“He does. Which is a good thing because he can have tabs on me. You know, look out for the students.” She said, sniffling.

Ron’s eyes widened at that comment. He looked at Harry with a look of fright, “Will you warn us before you tear us apart?” he asked carefully.

“I won’t know…when the time comes for death and destruction…it just happens. I’ve seen granny when she’s in a fit and her eyes go completely black, she has snakes slithering around her and her teeth elongate…they grow long.” She explained, noticing Ron’s expression when she said ‘elongated’.

“That sounds terrible…” Harry said, hanging his head.

“You think that’s terrible? I’ve seen a Furie up close and personal and I’m telling you Potter, if you think snakes for hair, black eyes and fangs are terrible…then you’re in for a rude awakening.” Draco said in a huff.

Hermione glared at him, “Watch your tongue Malfoy.” She hissed.

“Back to last names Granger?” He asked, mischievously.

She rolled her eyes and turned back to her friends, “Just promise you both won’t go average on me? And…if I happen to do something utterly terrible…please don’t try and stop me.”

They hesitated, “As long as you promise not to go around on a killing spree.” Ron said.

“That’s what I’m trying to tell you Ron! When it happens…and it will, don’t stand in my way…otherwise I might kill you both.” She explained placidly.

Ron raised his eyebrows, “Oh! That’s what you was talking about…okay. I promise to run in the other direction! You have my word!” Ron said in a huff.
