Chapter 3 ~ Severus and the Doctor Arrive at Hogwarts

Severus pushed open the main doors and entered the castle, followed closely by Dr. Digmon. The doctor paused for a moment, taking in the stonework, high ceilings, portraits, armor and tapestries, as well as robed students hurrying through the huge hall, staring at him and whispering curiously as they passed. He started after Severus who was climbing a huge staircase, when suddenly he felt something swoop through him. He shuddered, chilled to the bone.

“Excuse me,” a hollow voice said apologetically.

The doctor blinked as a semi-transparent man dressed in medieval clothing bobbed before him. He tipped his entire head to the side and said, “Entirely my fault.” He then popped his head back in place and drifted off, floating at least two feet above the ground.

The doctor shook his head, took a deep breath and followed after Severus who had stopped on the staircase and watched the exchange between Nearly Headless Nick and the muggle. He was slightly impressed. Most muggles would have fled screaming after encountering a real ghost. The doctor seemed to have steady nerves. This made Severus feel a little better about him delivering his child. He waited for Dr. Digmon to catch up to him. They started up the staircase.

“I see you met one of our resident ghosts, Nearly Headless Nick,” Severus said, looking at the doctor sideways.

“Oh, is that his name?” the doctor replied, looking back toward the hall. The ghost was gone. “Very cool fellow.”

Severus smirked at the double entendre.

“Yes,” the Potions Master said, “you might want to avoid letting ghosts pass through you. It is a very chilling experience.”

“To be sure,” the doctor replied. He looked up to a huge expanse of ceiling. Lining the walls were innumerable portraits. They seemed to be moving. The doctor looked closer. Yes, they were moving, and most were pointing at him, whispering . Some were even leaving their own pictures and crowding into the next to get a better look at him. A couple of the paintings waved at him. He waved back. Also he noticed doorways in the walls, some had staircases leading to them, and others seemed to be surrounded by ledges with no access.

He climbed a new set of stairwells with the Potions Master, walked on to the landing and was about to step up to another flight when the Potions Master stopped him.

“Wait,” Severus said.

Suddenly the stairwell shuddered and the landing pulled loose from the adjoining stairs, and began to move. The wizard stood there, looking impatient as they approached another landing. The doctor looked over the edge of the stair and swallowed at the drop below. He stood with his legs wide for balance and his heart almost stopped as the landing connected with another stairwell with a slight jar. Severus continued up this new flight of stairs, the doctor close behind. They rode two more of these moving staircases until they came to one of the openings in the wall surrounded by a ledge. The doctor realized that the stairs connected to these ledges so every opening was actually accessible. Severus stepped off the stairwell and turned into the opening, which was actually a door to a corridor. They walked a distance and turned down another corridor. There sat two young men in robes, one with black hair and green eyes, and the other with shockingly red hair. Both stood up as they approached.

“Hello Professor Snape,” the two men said together, looking nervous. Severus scowled.

“Potter. Weasley,” he said with a hint of irritation. He had enough to worry about without these two hovering outside the infirmary like vultures. The two young men looked at Dr. Digmon curiously.

“I’m Doctor Digmon. Lady Snape’s obstetrician,” the doctor said, extending his hand.

The two wizards shook his hand in turn, then looked the doctor up and down appraisingly, focusing on his boots.

“Those dragonhide?” Ron asked.

The doctor shook his head. “No, snakeskin,” he replied.

“Cool. Never seen boots made of snakeskin. Bet old Salazar would roll over in his…” Ron started before clapping his hand over his mouth and looking at Snape, who was scowling at him.

“Is Hermione going to be all right, Doctor? I mean, this is her first baby and all,” Harry said, looking at the white-haired muggle intently. Severus shuffled impatiently.

“Well, she did fine throughout her term. I don’t foresee any complications,” the doctor said evenly, wondering if Harry was Hermione’s brother or a family relation.

“Good,” Harry said with a sigh of relief.

Severus stepped to the infirmary door and opened it. He looked back at the three men.

“My wife, doctor,” he said curtly.

“Certainly, Professor,” the doctor replied, walking through the open door.

“Congratulations, Professor, “ Ron called out behind the Potions Master. Severus paused, and looked back at the young wizard.

“Thank you, Mr. Weasley,” he said, before closing the door.

Pomfrey heard the door open and stepped out from behind the curtain, scowling. Severus and a white-haired man in a long white coat were rapidly approaching. Pomfrey looked disapprovingly at the man’s boots. Absolutely improper…all that clicking around patients. She swelled visibly as they stopped. Severus indicated the doctor.

\"Madam Pomfrey I would like to introduce you to Dr. Digmon, Hermione’s obstetrician.\" he said, arching his brow at the medi-witch, interested in seeing her reaction to the muggle doctor in her territory.

Dr. Digmon smiled at the medi-witch, who did not return it.

“Doctor,” she said curtly by way of greeting.

“Ah,” he thought, “she doesn’t like me on her turf.”

“I take it you’ve been taking excellent care of our patient,” the doctor said smoothly, accentuating ‘excellent’ and ‘our’. You will, of course be assisting me, won’t you Madam Pomfrey? This is your facility after all and I welcome your expertise. Lady Snape is a witch, after all and I need to know if there is any marked differences between a witch giving birth as opposed to a…a muggle woman.”

He figured out muggle meant someone without magic.

Madam Pomfrey softened a little as she realized the doctor was not going to try and take over her infirmary.

”Of course doctor,” she said a little warmer. Severus looked at the doctor in approval. He had tamed the shrew. Severus had been worried the medi-witch would interfere with the birth, but it seemed now that she was insured she would be part of it, she was willing to cooperate.

“Our patient is in here,” she said, pulling back the curtain and revealing a sweating, panting Hermione. She looked up.

“Severus!” she said tiredly. The Potions Master rushed to her side, kissing her forehead and taking her hand.

“I’m here, my love. Are you all right?” he asked, studying her face.

“I’ve been better,” she said with a small smile, before she grimaced, leaned forward and cried out in pain as another contraction hit her. She crushed Severus’ hand as the pain washed over her.

“Breath, Hermione!” Severus said as he began showing her by example, breathing out through his mouth rhythmically. Hermione emulated him until the contraction passed and she fell back to the cot. Not releasing her hand, Severus pulled up a chair and sat down next to her.

“The doctor is here, Hermione,” he said softly.

Dr. Digmon walked up to the witch.

“Hello, Lady Snape. I see the time has arrived just as you said it would. It’s amazing. Your calculation of the exact due date was correct. That’s very rare,” he said, “usually the date is off by a week or so.”

“That’s my wife,” Severus said proudly, kissing her forehead.

“Well, let’s see how you’re doing,” Dr. Digmon said. He turned to Madam Pomfrey. Just by looking around the castle he was sure there were no modern technologies available. He would have to go the old country doctor route.

\"Madam Pomfrey, do you think it would be possible for me to have some boiled water, and a stack of very clean towels?\" he asked the medi-witch, \"I also need light to see by, and if possible, some latex or rubber gloves. You will need a set of gloves also,” he added as he pulled up a chair at the end of the cot.

\"Yes, doctor. I\'ll bring those items right away,\" Pomfrey replied, flouncing off. She had never participated in a muggle birthing before, and although she didn\'t approve, she was excited to learn something new. Knowing how to birth a child without magic might come in handy some day.

Dr. Digmon looked up at Severus.

“You’re going to have to move her down to the end of the bed, Professor, and pile some pillows behind her so she is propped up,” he said.

Severus nodded, and helped his wife moved down to the end of the bed, putting pillows under her to raise her up from the mattress. The doctor waited. Severus looked at him.

“What are you waiting for doctor?” he asked, his brow furrowed.

“I need light to see,” the doctor replied, looking over his shoulder to see if the medi-witch was returning. Severus whipped out his wand, said “Lumos” and handed the brightly glowing rod to the doctor, who looked at it curiously. It was bright, and emitted no heat. He gently spread Hermione’s legs wide, placed one hand on her swollen belly and lowered the wand to her apex, peering at her intently.

Hermione let out a howl, startling Severus as another contraction barreled through her.

“Breath, baby,” he said to her, again showing her what to do, clasping her hand tightly, his hand resting on her back, rubbing Hermione reassuringly as she leaned forward and huffed through the pain. As he attended his wife, Severus remembered the muggle coaching class he had reluctantly attended with her. What an experience that had been.

A/N: Well, Dr. Digmon is adapting admirably to his surroundings. I would have had a baby myself if Nick had swooped through me. Anyway, I hope you are enjoying the story so far. Still no lemons, but I think there will be at least one lemony scene.. There are sexuality issues that Severus had to deal with, after all. Next chapter will tell about his experience in the coaching class. It ought to be interesting. Please review.
