Chapter Four: What Can One Do When Love Isn\'t Returned?

This story has a Major skip now, its two years after Harry being sold. Now, Harry is sixteen almost seventeen Tom is twenty-one, and Draco is nineteen.

Horses trotted side by side, along the muddy road, the air still smelling of rain, and earth. The scenery would have been worth watching had the impenetrably lush forest still been there. However, it no longer was. Harrowing along side Northern Slytherin\'s leader was an infuriating task. Draco had explained multiple times that that forest was an invaluable resource, being overgrown with magical flora and fauna. It was simply foolish to be rid of it, no matter how inconvenient the location. Tom had agreed not to touch the forest, and he didn\'t. He didn\'t touch it when he burnt the forest down, the \"fire did all the work, and he never touched it,\" as Tom had explained. Draco luckily had stopped him half way, and managed to preserve half of the forest.

Draco led his men through their ally\'s campsite, readying himself to meet the person who had irked him all his life. Draco\'s Country Southern Slytherin, along with Northern Slytherin, were in a battle with Ravenclaw, their neighboring country. Ravenclaw had tried to negotiate an alliance, but in the mediation, they had asked for too many benefits, and land, they had tried to settle it, but the leader would not bend, being a classic greedy politician and ruler. Draco\'s troops had recently obtained a superior victory, and he was ready to tell the good news to the idio- to Tom the leader of Northern Slytherin.

Draco strode through the columns of tents till he found his destination. He came to the largest tent which was made by large lush velvet and golden tapestries, Draco appreciated the finer things as a prince, however during a war was not the time to have excessive extravagances. Draco scowled as he looked at the leader was settled in front of a large fire surrounded by his men. As usual Tom was laughing with his men, all of them possibly a little intoxicated, much to Draco\'s disgust. Draco loved jokes, and especially pranks, he did them as often if not more often then the next man, except when one is a leader one can\'t be that way with one\'s men and expect to be respected and followed blindly into battle. That is the ultimate goal, to your soldiers, you must be a stern face and orders, not to be meddled with. You simply couldn\'t have both friendship and an army relationship with your soldiers, and Draco would rather have his men behave in a way that would win the war, then be considered a ‘fun leader\'. Draco briefly listened to the conversation before interrupting. Draco saw soon that this conversation would turn ugly.

\"So Tom how\'s your little ‘house wife\'?\" said one of the men. Tom glared, \"Don\'t you DARE say that! Besides he isn\'t physically able to compete in a war! He\'s much too delicate!\"

\"Sorry boss, it\'s just funny! Still haven\'t won him over in two years? That sad.\", chuckled the man on his left.

\"Yeah, last time I saw him, but he wasn\'t talking to you! You really ought to give him up! I don\' care if he\'s bloody gorgeous, he\'ll never love you!\" piped in a man in the back, he was one of the men obviously drunk, due to his last obtrusive comment.

Tom\'s eyes flicker and Draco watched as he moved with near demonic speed and stood from his seat. He started throwing men out of his way, clearing a path for him self. The men took a while to figure out what was going on in their inebriated stupor, but soon caught the drift and cleared a passage for their leader. The garrisons withdrew to reveal the man who had said the last comment, who looked unmistakably confused. Tom lunged at him and pinned him on the ground slightly choking the man with his bare hands. Straddling him, his hair askew and running into his eyes, \"What did you say?\" He said in a deadly hiss, his crimson eyes menacingly lethal. \"What are you talking about? Of coarse he loves me. He just doesn\'t know it yet. He\'ll know it one day though, and then we shall rule together. But judging by what you said, you might not live long enough to see that.\" He continued and if his men hadn\'t known Harry, they would have thought from the confidence of his voice he was telling the truth. But sadly they all knew from meeting Harry that he would never love Tom. Tom continued to choke the man with vigor, his eyes looking irrational.

This is what I mean, thought Draco while watching the scene unfold. No respect at all when he wants it.

\"*Ahem*\" Draco said distracting Tom, successfully saving the man who was currently coughing on the floor. Gasping for air, he crawled away from Tom.

\"Draco! What news have you?\"

Draco tossed on his bed thinking about his misery. He had promptly stopped writing to Harry a month ago. Toms display of love for his fiancé had jarred his memory of Harry. He truly loved Harry but knew that the feelings weren\'t returned. Harry only wanted power, he thought Harry was different, but no, he was wrong, Harry was just like the rest of them. . .no, he was worse. He still remembered vividly the events off his sixteenth year.

\"Draco you are of sixteen and due to your parents\' death you must takeover the country. Usually we would stress the idea of a spouse . . . \" Draco instantly scowled at this,

\". . .but your parents wanted you to pick the right type of person so they designated that in their will not to rush it.\" Thank Salazar for small favors, Draco thought.

\"You must be careful, though. People will now try to get you to marry them for you are considered young and they think they can manipulate you and have a position of power through you.\" ugggh

\"Draco, you need to be careful, you don\'t know who will turn on you. You\'d be surprised what the prospect of power does to people. Be very alert, and whatever you do, don\'t trust someone, and let them trick you into marrying them, I\'ve seen it happen, so just don\'t let someone take advantage of your kind nature.\" Draco wasn\'t really that interested in this, frankly, he hated his parents. They were cold-hearted bastards and he was glad they died.

Dear Dragon,
As odd as this sounds, I need your help. I know this is sudden, but will you please marry me? I\'m in a very bad need of it, I can\'t explain right now, but please, you are my closest friend, and the only person of age with enough power to help me, please! I swear when the dangers over we can separate or something. I just really need help.

Please,
Harry

Draco only had to read the words \"marry\" and \"power\" to find reason to burn the letter. Watching it burn Draco vowed never to let someone trick him again. So he stopped writing letters to Harry. However, a week later, Harry wrote a letter to him. Draco continued to not respond to these, but another one came, and another one, and another one.

Harry continued writing so Draco started writing occasionally as well. It was different now though, Harry never told about himself in the letters and Harry seemed to not really care about anything. When Draco asked him what was wrong he merely wrote \"It\'s my problem not yours.\" This infuriated Draco to the point that after one year of reading that line he stopped writing to Harry completely. Harry continued though, no matter what Draco endured letter after letter, and Harry didn\'t stop, he always inquired about his health, and how he felt about the War, if draco hadn\'t known better he would have guessed Harry still cared, but he was sure he just didn\'t want to start a war between Gryfindor, and Slytherin. So Harry continued his letters, and with each letter Draco longed to respond but he knew that he couldn\'t be with someone he loved if they didn\'t love him back.

While thinking of country relation\'s and such, Draco stumbled on a horrific thought, the annual Unition Ball held between Slytherin and Gryfindor was in one month. He would have to see his love again, a thought that pained him to his soul. What would he do? What can one do when love isn\'t returned?
