CHAPTER FOUR
On her way to see Madam Pomfrey and Professor Snape, Hermione thought about the day’s events so far. Apparently, she was not going to be able to tell anyone about what happened the previous evening. Even so, she knew deep down that she had seen the Mermaid tattoo on her body earlier. Maybe it had the ability to move. She was going to have to check her body more thoroughly after her meeting.
As Hermione arrived at the hospital wing, she noticed that all the beds were neatly made and stood ready for anyone who would be in need. As she walked towards the Medi-Witches Office, she could see that Professor Snape had already arrived and was currently seated in one of the two chairs in front the nurse’s desk.
At that moment, the Medi-Witch looked up and waved Hermione in, saying, “Come in and have a seat. We’re ready to discuss your apprenticeship.”
“Thank you,” said Hermione as she took her seat next to the Potions Master.
“Let’s get on with it,” growled Professor Snape.
“Yes, yes, Severus, I know you’re busy, and I’ll try not to take up to much of your time,” replied Madam Pomfrey. “As you already know Hermione, while lots of healing can be done with a wand, sometimes we need other forms of magic, like potions, to help our patients along. Professor Snape has kindly agreed to let you assist him in making the potions that we will be using in the infirmary.”
Not wishing to interrupt the Medi-Witch, Hermione nodded her head, indicating that she understood.
“Because it is summertime,” Madam Pomfrey continued, “we will need to re-supply our stocks. Therefore, during the summer months, your training will only be four and a half days a week. On Monday, Wednesday, and the half-day on Friday, you will be in here or in the library. On Tuesday and Thursday, you will meet with Professor Snape in his potions lab. You will be working on all the supplies we will need for the upcoming year. Unless we tell you otherwise, your hours will be from eight to five o’clock on each of the days mentioned. Do you understand what I’ve told you so far?” asked the Medi Witch.
“Yes, ma’am,” replied Hermione.
“Very good,” answered Madam Pomfrey. “Your free time will be your own. You don’t have to report your whereabouts to either Severus or myself, but if you are going to leave the grounds, I would appreciate it if you would let someone know. According to the Headmaster, you are only required to attend the evening meals in the Great Hall. Dinner is at six sharp during the summer.”
Again Hermione nodded her head in agreement.
“You will have assignments that will need to be turned in, that will need to be done on your own time, the Medi-Witch continued.
Should you need any help, please feel free to see me at any time. My door is always open.”
“This is not going to be an easy time, Miss Granger.” Professor Snape spoke as he looked directly into Hermione’s eyes. “You will be expected to put forth the same effort that you have shown these last seven years. While you may ask questions, be sure that they are intelligent and precise. As I said at the beginning of your first year, there will be no foolish wand-waving in my lab. All the rules that previously applied during class time will remain in force. Do you have any questions?”
“Not at this time,” replied Hermione.
The Potions Master was impressed, because he knew that Hermione was well read up on the requirements and dedication that was necessary to become a Medi-Witch. Miss Granger wasn’t waving her hands about, trying to show Madam Pomfrey and him how much she knew. ‘Maybe she has grown up after all,’ thought Professor Snape.
“Well, dear,” said Poppy, “that will be all for now. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and I will see you first thing Monday morning.”
With that, Hermione and Professor Snape both stood up at the same time to leave.
“Miss Granger,” he said with a sweep of his arm, and allowed Hermione to precede him out of the office.

Since that it wasn’t lunchtime yet, Hermione decided to go to the Library. She wanted to see if there was any information on Mermaid’s curses or gifts. Unfortunately, she could not find anything, but she did find some information on the Merpeople themselves.
She read that Mermaids and Mermen had been around for centuries. Ran, the first queen of the Mermaid’s, was considered the patron of unmarried girls and young woman women.
Mermaids have a reputation for luring men to their supposed deaths, while Mermen liked to steal items. Also in the books, was information regarding the increasing decline in the Merpeople population. Hermione knew from speaking with Harry, after the Triwizards Tournament, that most of the Merpeople had grayish skin, yellow teeth and eyes, and dark green hair. That certainly didn’t line up with the one Mermaid that she had seen recently. Perhaps being so deep under the water made them appear that way.
She was going to look for another book when Ron and Harry entered the library.
“Hey, Hermione!” yelled Ron.
“Shush!” said Madam Pince.
Ron just gave her a devilish wink and grin as he strolled up to Hermione.
“We knew we’d find you here,” said Harry. “It’s almost time for supper.”
With that being said, Hermione replaced the book she was about to pull down and left for the Great Hall with the boys.
Knowing this was their last meal together, the trio sat close to one another. Harry and Ron told her of the Quidditch match, and they reminisced about old times. It was a quarter to eight when Hermione remembered the Mermaid’s warning. Making her excuses to the boys, Hermione went to her room and put back on her bikini top. She then covered herself with her robe and proceeded to sneak out of the castle.

Author’s Notes:
Thank you all for leaving a review for the story.
Anon – I’m trying to make the chapter’s longer.
CatPower – Glad you like it so far.
Keursten – Thanks for wanting me to continue.
Lemonade – Your review gave me another viewpoint and for that I thank you. It really shook me up when I first read that you thought it was like rape. To me rape implies an act of violence whether it is physical or mental. When writing the story that was not the intent. I always image Hermione to be calm when facing a crisis, thus she has remained calm so far. As June, my Beta, pointed out, it isn’t the first time that Hermione has found herself in an altered state. She certainly didn’t panic when she turned into a cat during her second year or during any of the other adventures she has been in with Ron and Harry. During the next chapter we are going to see Hermione get angry and find out a few other details that may take the confusion out of the story. Thanks again for your review.
Fraser – I’m trying to make the chapter’s longer.
Thank you June for everything.
