Chapter IV: Christmas Gift
Chapter IV: Christmas Gift
12/25/91
Draco woke up the next morning with golden locks on his face that didn’t seem his. He opened his eyes to find himself still in the dungeons holding Hera against his chest protectively. Protecting her from solitude…
Sunlight reached every corner of the Manor as though forgetting how dark it should be, except for the dungeons, the place where it was most needed.
‘Hera?’, Draco whispered to see if she was awake, but when he got no answer, he got up from her side quietly to go get her Christmas present from his room. He was half way away from de door when he heard her cough. He smiled sideways and glanced over his shoulder, expecting to see her in the same position he had left her, but finding her standing over the bed, with the sheets clutched around her and her eyes wide open. ‘Hera, what are you doing?’, he laughed nervously.
She didn’t move. Didn’t blink. She just stood there, looking like she didn’t belong to the world, it was beneath her… Her eyes where locked with Draco’s, hypnotising him, not letting him move. She opened her mouth, but it wasn’t her voice the one that came out.
‘Discovered he has been, leaving a trace of red and silver blood behind him. He shall fall once more before the train takes the hero away from his true home for the first time.’
With that, she fell on her knees over the mattress and gasped for air, blinking rapidly. Draco ran to where she was and took her head between his palms, stroking her hair and looking into her grey eyes.
‘Why did you say that, love? What made you say that!?’
‘Daky? I’m scared…’, she cried, wrapping her arms around his pale neck. He lifted her from the bed and tried to calm her down.
‘This… this is a good thing. You predicted something, Hera. Do you know what this means?’, he asked softly. She shook her head. ‘Your not a squib. You do have magic in you.’
‘Don’t tell a’yone’, she begged.
‘You don’t want me to tell Mother and Father your not a squib?’, he asked a bit puzzled, and she shook her head again. ‘Alright, it’ll be our secret.’
He wasn’t really sure why she didn’t want them to know, but she was the seer after all, not him. There had to be a reason and he wasn’t about to try and see what would happen if he told his parents about it.
‘Wait right here, OK? I have something for you’, he said after kissing her forehead, and left the dungeons.
Discovered he has been, leaving a trace of red and silver blood behind him. He shall fall once more before the train takes the hero away from his true home for the first time…
The whole way up to his room, those words spoke themselves in his head. He was trying to figure out what it meant. Who had been discovered? Red and silver blood? Probably from humans and unicorns, but why? What did it mean? Hero? Bloody Potter, of course… he blew in irritation. He was searching his school trunk with the same frustration until he found the small box. He ran out the room, leaving a great mess behind him, and was stopped by his father on his way down.
‘Draco, why are you running?’, he asked curiously.
‘Bathroom’, he lied.
‘There’s a bathroom right there, Draco. Where are you really going?’, he asked coldly.
‘To see Hera, alright? Can I please go now?’, he asked trying to calm himself down.
‘No, you can see her later. Your mother wants to open the Christmas presents.’
‘Can’t she open them with us? Let her get out of there, Father, just for a while’, he begged.
‘Draco, we’ve gone through this many times. She’s not coming out and that’s final! Now, your coming with me to the living room to open those sodding gifts!’, he yelled hitting the floor with his snake-shaped cane.
Draco realized it would be wiser to bite his lip and follow his father than keep on arguing and lose some more time. The Christmas tree in the living-room had been obviously decorated by the house elves, since it was far too cheerful for their home. Narcissa was there already, waiting for them.
‘Happy Christmas’, she smiled with the usual morning-shag glow in her face.
‘Happy Christmas’, they both said.
Draco unwrapped his gifts quickly, trying to hide his desire to be with his sister, only half-looking what his parents had given him, which were five books and a very expensive wizard’s chess board.
‘Thank you’, he said as he got up.
‘Wait, don’t you want to play a game?’, Lucius asked arranging the pieces on the board.
‘Later, Father.’
‘OK, go see her now…’, he growled.
Draco went back to the dungeons with the small box he had taken out from his trunk. Hera was lying on her stomach on the floor, drawing. As soon as he opened the door, she ran over to him and grabbed him by the leg.
‘You came back!’, she beamed.
‘Of course I did’, he laughed. ‘Happy Christmas, Hera’, he said giving her the box.
She sat on the floor, opened it anxiously and took out two rings that looked exactly the same. They were both silver and had a green M on it. Draco sat on the floor next to her, took one of the rings and put it in her thumb.
‘From now on, we’ll both wear this rings and whenever I’m thinking of you when I’m not home, I’ll just touch the ring and you’ll know’, he smiled and put on his own ring in his middle finger.
‘Really?’, she beamed and touched the ring, giving Draco a strange feeling of satisfaction. Something warmed up in his chest and his smile grew even wider. ‘Thank you, Daky’, she said and hugged him.
‘I love you, Hera. No matter what happens, remember I love you.’
‘Here, this is for you’, she said with a finger in her mouth and gave him a drawing of the two of them holding hands in the dungeons. There was no green grass and no happy sun, just darkness.
