CH.4

Diegara sat at the edge of the Forbidden Forest on a decaying log as he caught his breath and tried to think of a way to get to Harry. It was about time for midday meal and the boy would be in the Great Hall, so at least he knew w Har Harry was. The only problem was how to actually get to him. It wasn’t like he could just walk in there and tell him. Diegara paused and thought on that for a few moments. Really he could just walk, or slither rather, in and talk to Harry! He just had to transform into one of his serpent forms and he could get Hedwig to carry him in. The snowy owl had done him favors before so that would be simple enough.

‘Now, which snake form to use? A viper? No, to dangerous. It might startle the others. A cobra? Definitely not, they were even more dangerous. A python would be to big at his age, and cotton mouths were far from familiar with this continent much less the immediate area. Perhaps a garden snake?’ Diegara paced as he thought to himself silently, ‘No, to weak. In a snake form I could stay with Harry as long as I’d like, I could protect him. Hmm... I suppose a viper or cobra would be the best choices, seeing as I don’t have a rattler form, a pity really they’re amazing little devils. I’ll have to make a note to get one in the future.’ With that Diegara turned into a fox and headed for the owlery.

When he got there it took a few minutes to barter his way into a ride from Hedwig, especially as a venomous snake, that seemed to put her off quite a bit. Finally Diegara let his foxy exterior again melt away and leave behind a beautiful king cobra with red markings on it’s black hood that resembled a black widow spider. Hedwig allowed him to coil around one leg and up her back then took off for the castle. A few minutes latter and they were swooping into the Great Hall much to the curiosity of the rest of the school. Hedwig landed in front of Harry and Diegara got off, sending a gasp and a few screams through the Griffindor ranks. Ignoring the others around him the Changeling slithered over to Harry.

“You have to keep Severus here! Voldemort is out to kill him!” Diegara hissed out in a hurry.

“What? Kill Snape, but why?”Harry asked.

“Something about him no longer being useful? Somethin’ like that anyway. How the hell should I know?!” Diegara asked wishing he could pout.

“Well you are the one who obviously over heard the conversation.” Harry said.

“Yeah, well. Just warn him a’ight? I don’t need anymore blood on my conscience. Needless blood at any rate...” Diegara said.

“Fine then.” Harry held out his arm to his friend and waited, “Well, are you coming or not?”

“Huh? Oh! Yeah, comin’.” He slithered up Harry’s arm and around his shoulders.

Once settled, Harry stood and walked to the head table. He approached the Head Master and bent to whisper in his ear. The older man looked a bit startled. When he recovered he asked Harry, McGonagall and Snape to follow him. They had walked swiftly to the Headmasters office where Harry automatically took a seat in one of the two high backed chairs in front of the Headmaster’s desk. Diegara sat reared up and looking around on the boy’s shoulder. Snape was watching the asp wearily obviously not trusting him.

“Hey! The old coot’s go a phoenix! Nifty, you think I could get a taste of her? I’ve always wanted to add phoenix to my arsenal.” Diegara turned and hiss at Harry after catching sight of the fiery bird. Harry chuckled, and Fawks squawked at the serpents unhappily.

“I don’t think she would be willing Die. Sorry mate.” Harry hissed with a smile.

Dumbledore was frowning at the scene when Harry and Diegara looked up at the sound of his voice, “Could you please tell us what your little friend has told you.”

“Oh, he said that Voldemort was planning to kill Severus and that he may attack soon.” Harry said stroking the back of Diegara’s head and hood.

“If I was a cat I’d be purring lil’ bro.” Diegara said in a groanish hiss. Harry had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling. Snape arched an eyebrow at the attempt.

“And what is so funny Mr. Potter?” He asked abruptly oe vee verge of anger.

“Diegara, the snake. He’s quite a hoot actually.” Harry said slyly. His voice had drop an octave and sent a chill up Snapes spine as the boy stroked the softly hissing cobra’s head. Needless to say he dropped the conversation as soon as it had been brought up.

“That’s better. This dude’s gonna be a problem isn’t he? Way to nosy in my opinion.” Diegara said giving the professor a good look over, “But kinda nice when it comes the body I’m sure.”

Harry ignored that last comment, “He’d make a good allie though.”

“He’s gonna be a piece of work.” The Changeling warned as he scrutinized the man.

“I think he may just be worth it. Do you trust him?” Harry asked not paying attention to the adults as they discussed what to do, Snape still glancing at him as he spoke with Diegara. The snake flicked his tongue out in Severus direction, and the man visibly shivered uncomfortably.

“I trust him, he’s a bit fearful though. To many scars on his heart I suppose,” Diegara trailed off tilting his head to one side at Severus. A silver flash passed over his beady eyes, “It’s a wonder he isn’t dead.”

“What do you mean?” Harry asked a bit worried but his answer was interrupted by Snape’s angry voice.

“Are you quite done Potter?! That infernal hissing is quickly grating on my nerves!” Snape growled. Diegara slithered down Harry’s body to the floor and over to Snape. He sat staring up at the man, head tilted to one side hissing softly.

“He wants to know why your so sad.” Harry whispered, “I think he rather likes you professor.” Harry smirked at the older man.

“What do you mean he rather likes me?!” Snape didn’t seem particularly pleased with this information. Suddenly, much to Harry and the other’s surprise Diegara transformed back into his human form.

“So sad. You shouldn’t be sad.” The lithe figure whispered to a highly startled Severus Snape while the Headmaster and Professor McGonagall looked at Harry.

“What? He’s a Changeling, I’ve known him for years. He visits me some nights here at school when I can’t sleep.” The boy admitted, fainting innocence.

“We will talk about this and the,” Dumbledore sighed, “Changeling’s presence another time.”

“I’m only here to help Sir,” Diegara looked sharply at the Headmaster detecting a hard undertone to the old man’s words, “And I’ve got a name, it’s Diegara. ‘Means refuses death, and I assure you that I don’t die easy. I only wanna protect my family, that’s why I’m here because Harry is part of my family.”

“And how did Mr. Potter come to be part of your family?” The Headmaster asked curiously.

“I had been slithering around the castle in my snake form. I was returning to the astronomy tower to fly off when Harry found me. He asked what I was doing and I said exploring. After that we talked for a few hours. He returned to bed and I waited for him to leave before flying away. He didn’t know I was a Changeling until a few months later. That’s when he became part of my family,” Diegara looked up at Severus, “And now I request that he be part of my family.” Everyone in the room was speechless.
