Chapter 4

A Truth Stone was just what it sounded like, it was a device that measured the truth of someone’s words. They practically didn’t exist anymore, the only reason Draco had even heard of them was because his father used one when he was going to do something illegal and needed to make sure the people he hired weren’t going to turn him in. The next morning, Draco went to a local wizard shop called Odds and Ends. From the outside it looked run down and unpromising but after visiting it so many times with his father he knew it held many interesting and hard to find things. What was that muggle saying? Don’t judge a book by it’s cover? Draco walked up the store’s front steps carefully, making sure to avoid the large hole on the second step (he had learned about that the hard way when he was younger), and walked into the dim shop.

“Hello, Mr. Malfoy.” The clerk said eagerly, coming out from behind the counter to shake his hand and usher him further into the storWhatWhat brings you here today?”

“I’m looking for a Truth Stone,” Draco said, feeling no need to beat around the bush, “and I need it before the end of today.”

The clerk’s face fell for a moment but he quickly recovered. “Are you sure you wouldn’t prefer something else Mr. Malfoy? I’ve just had a new shipment of-“

“No,” Draco said firmly, “Nothing else will do. I will make it worth your time, I assure you.” While saying this he brought a money bag full of Galleons out of his pocket and dropped it onto the counter in front of the clerk. The clerk’s eyes widened and his hand quickly shot out to grab the bag. Draco placed his own hand on top of the greedy clerk’s, not allowing him to pick up the money , “Not until you bring me what I’ve asked for.”

The clerk looked reluctant but he slowly withdrew his hand and a second later he disappeared. Draco didn’t know where he had apparated off to but he guessed that it would be a while before he came back. So Draco settled himself into a nearby chair and passed the time by imagining the different ways Harry would react to his gift. He hoped that Harry would like it. By giving Harry this gift he was giving Harry a certain degree of power over him. Harry would be able to see through his lies and see him for who he really was. And though this thought frightened him, he also desired it in some unexplainable way. Perhaps he was simply going mad...

Draco sat, absorbed in his own thoughts until the clerk suddenly reappeared. He was looking pleased with himself and Draco took that as a good sign. “I’ve got it sir. I had to look all over to find it, but I got it. Found it in a small shop down in Egypt, it’s in perfect condition. Just like new.” The clerk pulled the Truth Stone from out of his pocket and laid it on the counter for Draco to inspect.

It was a beautiful stone, at the moment it was white, like freshly fallen snow. Draco picked it up and held it lightly in his palm. “My name is Draco Malfoy.” The stone remained white. “I am in Hufflepuff.” The stone began to darken, within a few seconds the stone was the color of onyx. Draco smiled to himself, pocketing the stone. “You did well. Here’s your money.” And with that Draco tossee moe money bag onto the counter and walked out into the bright sunlight.

It was a little past noon by the time Draco got home, but as soon as he did he got to work. He took one of his silver rings and transfigured it so that it could hold the stone. Then, using a bit more magic, he tightened the prongs so that they held the stone in place. He looked at the stone that was now set in the ring, because no one was talking it was averyvery-gray, a color that Draco liked very much.

He looked at the finished product, it was beautiful. He hoped that he and Harry had the same size fingers but if they didn’t he could just transfigure it a bit. Checking it over once more he wrapped it up with a note and tied it to his owl’s leg. It was already almost dark, so by the time the owl got back to Hogwarts it would be Christmas Morning. It was perfect.

Draco crawled into bed that night very happy with himself. He couldn’t wait l tol tomorrow, but for once it wasn’t because of all the presents he was sure to receive. He shut his eyes hoping once more that Harry would like his gift and then, imagining Harry in his arms he fell into a deep peaceful sleep.
