Chapter 4 - Spurned

Hermione lay awake, staring up at the hangings around the bed. Severus hadn’t come to see her after the visit from Dumbledore and she wondered how long it had lasted and what had been said. If it concerned her, why had he not allowed her to stay? And why was Lucius Malfoy so interested all of a sudden? What did he know about this?

She decided to get up and run herself a bath. As she lay in the soothing bubbles, she thought about Severus. The tall strong physique, those penetrating eyes and agile hands. She felt a warm glow grow down inside her and lazily reached a hand down between her legs to satisfy the pulsating throb of desire.

Severus had already sat down to breakfast by the time Hermione got to the Great Hall. She smiled, trying to catch his eye but his steely gaze was unwavering as she took her seat along the table from him. No doubt some Gryffindor do-gooder had caught his eye and he felt obliged to watch them un-unnervingly throughout breakfast. Hermione chuckled to herself – she alone had seen the other side of Severus Snape.

Breakfast proceeded without incident, Hermione chatting politely with Professor McGonagall about the day ahead – a day of light teaching duties, plenty of time to spend on her potions research down in the dungeons. Good! If Severus had any free time, maybe they could ‘get together’! She giggled inwardly again, eager to tell her lover of her plans for the day.

Hermione loitered at the end of top table, noticing Severus rise from his seat. He strode the length of the table purposefully but then swept past Hermione and out of the Great Hall, his robes billowing behind him.

“Severus, wait…” her voice was lost in the general commotion of the hall, and cut off completely as the door slammed in front of her. She threw open the door and raced along the ancient corridors, catching the potions master.

“What the hell was that for?” Her face was pure fury as she grabbed hold of Snape’s shoulder and pulled him round to face her.
“Why, whatever do you mean Miss Granger?” His voice was cold, cutting through her in the same way as his eyes were boring into her. It was as if he were looking at an insubordinate student rather than the woman he had made love to.

“You know very well what I mean! What happened with Dumbledore? Why are you acting like this?”
“We can’t see each other. The chair of Governors has raised an objection.”
“Since when did you care what Lucius Malfoy thinks?” Hermione stopped. At the sound of the name of the Chair of Governors, Severus had stiffened and taken on a different look, almost as though his heart was pleading with her. “It’s over Hermione.”

“Over?” She was stunned and stared beseechingly into his eyes. “Over because of Lucius Malfoy?”
Severus gritted his teeth. “Yes, Hermione, over because of Lucius Malfoy!”

Hermione spent no time in her laboratory that day. Instead after her 3rd year Slytherin class (and several lost points for Slytherin!) she returned to her rooms, warded the door and retreated, crying, curled into a ball in her bed. She had already missed lunch and by the time dinner was over and nobody had come to find her, the feelings of hurt and betrayal had given way to anger and contempt. As she sat contemplating her next move there was a knock on the door.

Removing the wards with her wand, she flung back the door expecting to see a shame faced Severus. “What..?…Oh!” Her tone mellowed as she was faced with the resolute gaze of Minerva McGonagall.

“Get dressed at once Miss Granger! Our Chair of Governors has asked to see you. Room of Requirement. Seventh floor!” With that, McGonagall swept away down the corridor. She had been summoned – to meet with Lucius Malfoy.
