Secrets on the Stairway
After I slipped out the door I started running up the steps to catch up with Sirius, but before I turned the corner to reach him, I stopped. Remus would have to come up these stairs to get back to his dormitory, and the last thing I wanted was for the boys to figure out what I was going before I was done. As I was working out whether or not to wait for Remus, I could hear footsteps behind me. I looked around frantically, trying to find somewhere to hide. After all, I was wearing only a towel, and if those footsteps belonged to a teacher… well, let’s just say I would be in BIG trouble. I saw a large statue of a knight in armor that was set back into a small alcove in the wall, andppedpped behind it where I was mostly hidden by the shadows. I could hear the footsteps move closer, and then I saw Remus come around the corner fully dressed again with his wet brown hair sticking up at odd angles. Before I could breathe a sigh of relief, he whispered loudly,
“Sirius? Are you still here?” After a short pause, I heard footsteps coming from the opposite direction, and Sirius appeared.
“Yeah, Remus?” Sirius whispered quietly. “Anyone else around?”
“No, I didn’e ane anyone.” Remus answered, speaking quietly, but no longer whispering. “What’s happening?”
“Tomorrow’s the full moon, and we have nothing planned! James is freaking out about it and wants to have about meeting right now, but he’s just weird tonight because Lily got him good today at dinner.” Sirius answered, with a half-amused, half-worried smile.
“Full moon?” I wondered? “Who cares?”
“Anyway,” Sirius continued, “ Peter was bitching about having stubbed his toe last month and how his finger still hurt from it. I told him if he kept complaining I would cut it off and send it home to his mother in a box. That shut him up fast.” Sirius said with a lazy grin.
“How would stubbing your toe make your finger hurt?” I wondered, but quickly was distracted when Remus said,
“Padfoot, you bastard, if you’re gonna scare the poor rat, so it properly. You have teeth in that cute little puppy face of yours, you should threaten to use them once in a while.”
“Moony, scary teeth are your field.” Sirius said, stuffing his hands in his back pockets. “Anyway, I have a great idea for tomorrow night, but I haven’t run it by Prongs yet. But wouldn’t it be awfully distracting if a large deer were to run through Hogsmeade? I’m sure not too many people would notice if Wormtail slipped under the door and snitched a few Pepper Imps, would they?”
“Prongs would love the attention, wouldn’t he? Let’s go tell him, maybe it will dist him him from his Lilykins” Remus said, giving a simpering smile and batting his eyes as they both walked back up the stairs, laughing.
I stayed hidden for a few moments before coming out and walking slowly to my dormitory, thinking the whole time. Judging by the conversation I just overheard, each boy’s nickname seemed to correspond with an animal; an animal they could change into? “I know they aren’t registered animaguses, but could they be unregistered ones? And why would the full moon matter?” I was still thoroughly confused when I went to bed that night, but I knew two things for sure:
1: I would have to find out more, and
2: exactly who would tell me what I wanted to know.
