Chapter 39

“Right then…go on.” Chloe said crossing her arms over her chest like Severus was. Severus eyed her for a moment intently.

“What were you going to say?” He said in a low voice.

“Nothing. Go on before I change my mind.” Chloe said fighting smile.

Severus stepped back from her and aimed his wand at her. Ultimately, he would have to reverse this spell in order for it to work the proper way. But seeing as though Chloe couldn’t do magic, he would settle for testing the theory. In essence, this spell should be used the complete opposite way. But if this worked, all he would have to do was modify the reverse effects, in order to accomplish his goal. It was a simple plan, but he really needed to know if this particular phase would work, before he could go further.

“Now, I want you to think of something negative. Preferably about me. Are you thinking of it?” Chloe nodded. Severus narrowed his eyes and spoke aloud.

“Reverses Negotium!”

Nothing.

He looked at Chloe and her eyes were shut. She opened one of her eyes and peeked out at him.

“Didn’t work?” She half laughed. Severus snarled a curse word her way and she did laugh.

“It just means it needs to be nonverbal. Stop Laughing! It won’t work if your laughing!” But Chloe had caught a fit of the giggles. Standing there, with Severus Snape, allowing him to experiment a hex on her. Really it wasn’t funny…but…it was nervous laughter.

“Chloe…’ Severus said in a not very patient tone. Chloe bit her lower lip and held her hands up.

“Ok, ok. One second. OK….ready.” She closed her eyes again.

“Something negative…think Chloe!” Chloe’s giggle fit disappeared at his urgent tone. He really meant business.

*****************

Severus rolled his eyes as she regained her composure.

Women.

“Something negative…think Chloe!” Severus aimed his wand at her and recited the spell, this time nonverbally. Like someone had punched him in the stomach, he was winded. He closed his eyes and felt a heat rising in his skin. He was receiving her feelings…in one, swift moment…Severus felt every negative feeling Chloe had about him.

Anger.

Chloe was angry at the thought that Severus was worrying about Bellatrix and the other Death Eaters. She was angry because she thought he would go…even though he told her he wouldn’t.

Another flash.

Sadness.

Sad because she didn’t know how to tell him that she loved him. She didn’t want him to go without him knowing.

Another flash.

Fear.

Fear that he wouldn’t or couldn’t love her.

Severus found himself on his knees, gasping at the pain in his chest. The emotions he pulled from her came at him in full force. So much so it hurt.

And these were not even close to the caliber of emotions Bellatrix Lestrange was walking around with.

He had done it. Well, almost. If he could find the right way to reverse this spell…he would have a fighting chance.

His heart was heavy. He rested his hands on the floor, on all fours, breathing deeply. He counted the minutes until the effects wore off. Slowly, the pain and anger Chloe had focused on dissipated. He raised his head and met her eyes.

She was crying. Slow tears were falling from her eyes.

“I guess it worked.” She said.

Severus pushed himself up to his feet and pocketed his wand. In one swoop he gathered her in his arms and kissed her. Gently and with feeling.

His heart was full to bursting. She loved him.

“You saw everything?” he asked. Chloe shook her head.

“I felt it leaving me. Those thoughts that I carry with me always…just left. When I opened my eyes your eyes were shut and you looked…sad.” Severus wiped her remaining tears from her face and kissed her cheek before puling her to him in a full body hug.

“I am not leaving Chloe. I promise…on my honor I will not leave. I am doing this for someone else.” She held him to her and he did his best to calm her.

He wanted to address the other issue…but didn’t know how. This wasn’t really his area of expertise.

Chloe pulled away from him and wiped her hair room her eyes.

“Who is the spell for anyway? If you’re not going, that is.” Severus didn’t meet her eyes. He was picking a piece of lint from her shoulder as he spoke.

“Potter.”
