Chapter 36
Chapter 36
The train had been well underway, Ron Weasley wandering from the back of the train to the front. He couldn’t find Harry or Hermione anywhere. They hadn’t been in Diagon Alley and they hadn’t been on the platform. Where were they?
He paused, noticing he was in the Slytherin part and squared his shoulders, trying to sneak past the car he could see Blaise Zabini in. That Slytherin just creeped him out. But he was so concentrated in getting by undetected that he looked into the next car and froze in place. It was them. And Draco Malfoy. His best friends were sitting next to Draco Malfoy. And they weren’t fighting.
He slammed open the door, jarring most of the car who looked at him with wide eyes. Draco stiffened and went for his wand, hand halfway into his robes before he realized it was just Weasley and not a Slytherin seeking revenge. Instead he sat back and waited for the fun to begin. He had promised Harry to be good, after all.
Harry glanced at the blond, sighing in relief that Draco wasn’t going to make this difficult before looking to the redhead, “Ron-...”
“Harry? What’re you doing here? That’s...that’s Malfoy-and Parkinson? Harry, what the hell is this? Have you joined the dark side or- ‘Mione? What? I can’t-...” Slamming his fist into the side of the door, “You’ve gone Slytherin, haven’t you? I knew you’d change your mind! Go back to the snake pit, huh?”
“Is there a problem, Weasley?” Ron turned around to see Blaise standing very close, Crabbe and Goyle
hanging over his shoulders and glaring at the redhead. Ron opened his mouth but no words came out. He was outraged. He was shocked and hurt. The redhead looked like his brain was about to combust, shaking his head in confusion before slowly wandering back down the aisle in a daze. Blaise gave another nod to Draco and went back to his car.
Harry looked unsure if he should follow, though jumped along with everyone else when the train started to slow to a stop half over a bridge. Draco, who’d been staring out the window, leaned back as he noticed ice crystals start to form over the glass, “This isn’t good...I know it isn’t...” Glancing at Harry, the two of them jumped to their feet, wands out and heading for the door, though they paused when they felt the chill on the outside enter the train and seemingly seep into their soul.
They felt the presence come near, Cassie scrambling to kneel with the twins who had backed against the wall. Pansy crawled to Hermione who had pulled out her wand and moved back. A skeletal hand clothed in black reached for the door, both Harry and Draco dropping to their respective seats as their souls were encased in the frozen ice. It slid open silently, a tall figure swathed in black tatters in the entryway. It seemed to float there before moving forward, towards Harry.
Another hooded figure appeared behind the first, each of them seemingly attracted to the boys, this one moving to Draco who’s eyes started to widen. Harry felt his mind distance from his body, hearing a shrill scream... like a woman’s scream. Then he heard no more.

Harry mumbled and slowly roused himself, the girls all spread out on the ground and running soothing hands over him. He glanced to his right to see Draco curled up on the other seat and still unconscious. Little Viola was standing on his hand and desperately nuzzling his cheek, her wings flapping in agitation. His eyes moved to Remus Lupin who gave him a small smile and handed him a block of chocolate, “Go ahead. Save a piece for Draco. I’ll check the other cars.” And he was gone with a swirl of his robes.
Sitting up slowly, his head swimming as he nibbled on the chocolate, “What happened?”
Pansy didn’t take her eyes off Draco, silently demanding he wake up, “You fainted.”
Blanching, “I didn’t.”
Hermione fidgeted, “Then you’re a heavy sleeper.”
Sighing, “Who screamed?”
Everyone answered at the same time, “Draco.”
Frowning, “No, I mean...I heard a woman...she was screaming...”
Cassie chewed on a fingernail, “No, just Draco.” Her voice sounding disturbed, “He just started screaming like that thing was killing him and he didn’t stop...not till that professor forced those things away...and then...he...”
Alex hugged the girl, she curling up and crying softly. Harry stumbled around them, sitting down on the other seat and checking Draco over. He wasn’t hurt, not a scratch. What had happened? Swallowing heavily, he carefully pulled the sleeping boy into his arms until he was curled up against him. Viola moved and settled in the blond locks, curling up. Hermione sat down next to both of them, Pansy still clutching her tightly and the Gryffindor allowed it without complaint.
It was a full hour before Draco stirred, shivering and feeling oddly terrified. But he had no idea why. He looked up at Harry who was watching him tensely, yet silently. His eyes rolled over to look at Hermione and Pansy, both looking at him hopefully. He quickly assessed that they were all watching over him.
His voice gruff and his throat sore, “What happened?”
Harry carded a hand carefully over Draco’s head, not even thinking about it, “That’s what we were wondering.”
Frowning, pushing himself up and wincing at his throbbing head, “I don’t...I don’t remember...I think...I think I heard...screaming...”
They all shivered, Harry hastily handing Draco the rest of the chocolate. Wrinkling his nose, he took a few nibbles, only doing so because he knew the Gryffindor would hound him until he did. It did make him feel better. Pansy giving him some pumpkin juice felt even better. They were oddly quiet for the rest of the journey, all tense as if expecting those things to return.
