Light in the Dark
A short, but poignant chapter. I cried when I wrote this. I'm such a sap.
Chapter 36- Light in the Dark
Yaxley pushed Severus into the hole and laughed when he hit the bottom with a nauseating ‘Crack.’ “Must be a real bitch, huh Sev. The right hand of Voldemort my ass. You is getting what you deserve. You musta really pissed off Lucius today for him to break your legs. Lucky you get to do it all over again tomorrow. Tha’s probably the only reason he’s keepin’ ya. Too much fun to pass up unlimited torture. Here’s yer dinner, brat.”
Two rotten cabbages, the freezer-burned dinner rolls and plastic bottle of river bottle dropped unceremoniously over Snape’s head. The bastard seemed to have an unlimited supply of those fucking dinner rolls.
“Nitey nite!” he cackled and the trapdoor slammed itself shut, locking into place.
Little Teddy sidled over to Severus in the pitch. “I taught myself how to make a light today, Mister Snape.”
Severus’s mind was in a different place. He didn’t even hear the boy through the haze of exhaustion and mind-numbing torture his body was under. A tiny flash of light caught his eye, dragging his dumb mind back to reality.
“What is that?” he rasped.
“I made a light, Mister Snape. I slowed down my breathing real good like you said and was real quiet. Then I ‘membered me and my Papa in the sunshine and we was both laughing. When I opened my eyes I had made a piece of sunshine. It only stays for as long as I think of my Papa and the sunshine though.”
He had never seen anything like it. The boy was able to conjure spells independent of a wand. His abilities were growing daily. He had never had any prior instruction, being shuffled around as he had been. Teddy had shown remarkable talent, not only with his natural ability at the laying on of hands, which had kept Severus alive daily, but with the meditations as well. He was a much disciplined child, focused and direct. Snape held a grudging admiration for him.
Teddy was going to be a very formidable wizard one day. He no longer thought of him as ‘the brat’. It was not appropriate any more.
Teddy saw the state of his friend and the light winked out. “They hurt you real bad today huh Mister Snape.”
“Yes Teddy, they did. They are very bad men.”
“I’ll fix you.” The familiar hands of the small boy gently moved over his body. Aches lessened, bruises healed, bones were knit. When all was said and done, Severus was able to move about and work out the stiffness that accompanied each healing. His cloak had disintegrated that morning after Lucius had whipped him. He was now left with his ripped trousers, no shirt and bare feet.
“I fixed our blankies too. They smelled bad and were scratchy so I thought about my blankies on my bed at the Weasley’s and now they is nice and warm Mister Snape.”
“You are an amazing child, Teddy. You must never allow our captors to discover your abilities.”
“Why not, Mister Snape?”
“Because they will kill you or try to force you to do bad things for them.”
“Because they are bad men, right?”
“Yes.”
Lupin’s son re-lit their small enclosure with his bit of sunshine. It really did look like a bit of sunshine. It had a soft glow that gently warmed their chilled flesh and gave them enough light to try and eat without fumbling in the dark and spilling the precious little water they were given.
Severus looked at the food thoughtfully. He had an idea.
“Teddy, do you think you could do a trick with the food?”
“Like what, Mister Snape?”
“You know how you think of something you remember, and it turns out the way you want it to be?”
“Yeah.”
“Try holding onto a dinner biscuit and think of something you like to eat. Not candy-“ he quickly added. “Think of something hot and warm from Mrs. Weasley’s kitchen.”
“Like Sheppard’s Pie!”
“Yes, that would do just fine. It can be anything that is filling and warm, a strong memory that you really like.”
The little light went out while Teddy held on to a dinner roll and concentrated on a coveted Sheppard’s Pie.
The aroma of Sheppard’s Pie wafted into the ravenous nostrils of the starving man.
“Teddy,” his voice trembled, “let me see what you have made.”
The light re-appeared and the boy was holding in his hands a gigantic plate of Sheppard’s pie, complete with a replica of the silverware Mrs. Weasley used.
“I didn’t mean to be greedy Mister Snape, I’s just real hungry.”
“You’ve done just fine Teddy,” he whispered hoarsely. “You’ve done just fine.”
For the first time in a month, man and boy gorged themselves until they could eat no more. Severus helped the boy to Banish the food, much similar to Evanesco but wandless. He only had to tell the boy one time how to train his mind and he got it right. He began to formulate a plan for escape.
With the tiny boy wrapped in his arms that night, Severus, for the first time in his life thought that if he were to have ever had a child in his life, he wished it would be a son just like Teddy Lupin. His eyes closed finally from exhaustion amid the lone tear that escaped unnoticed off the tip of his great nose as he succumbed to the bitter cold and darkness that was their meager existence.
