Brief as the Lightning

Okay. This is the next ball chapter. I'm not done with the ball yet, and so much is going on I'm not sure if I'll end it next chap or not. I hope to. Anyway, I'm off to work and wanted to leave you guys with something, which is why it's just a tad shorter than I wanted it to be, but it's pretty good. I think so, anywya.

Phelan scrambled to get to his feet as his father charged him. Fenrir drew back and delivered another punch to Phelan’s stomach. The Lycan youth’s breath left him with an audible ‘whoof,’ and he leaned over slightly, his arms wrapped around his stomach.

“Phelan!” Daisy cried. Phelan looked up at her, but Fenrir curled his fingers inward and slashed across Phelan’s face, leaving four perfect gashes in his wake. Phelan screamed this time, and his hands went to his face, blood dripping between his fingers. Fenrir turned to Daisy, a maniacal grin on his face.

“Hush now, girl. You’re next.” He snarled. Daisy’s face turned a sickly ashen color, and she shrank visibly.

“No!” Lucius exclaimed, and fired another spell at the barrier. He had to dodge again as it zoomed off away from him. This was pointless! He turned to Hermione, who was staring pale-faced at the scene before her. How could a father treat his son so terribly?

“Hermione…” Lucius said softly. She turned to him, still ashen from horror. “Do you think you can break this barrier?”

Hermione poked the rubbery, shimmering dome with her finger. “Looks like a Master’s work. I…don’t know if I can break it. I can try.” She said, and drew her wand.

~~

“Phelan! You gotta fight back! He’ll kill you…and me…” Daisy sobbed. Fenrir tilted his head slightly, like he was listening to something in the distance.

“What’s that? I think I hear the sweet sound of despair.” He said, and his subordinates laughed roughly.
Phelan swiped roughly at his face, clearing blood from his eyes.

“You…you bastard!” he roared. “You ruin everything! I find something good in my life and you try to take it away!”

“Good? Something good?” Fenrir barked, sounding slightly unhinged. “I helped give you life. I trained you from when you were a toothless cub, taught you how to defend yourself. I taught you how to be strong.” Fenrir raged, his shoulders hunching up slightly. He was tightly wound, and ready to spring. “And you want to throw away everything…you want to betray your pack, for this human?” Fenrir finished, spittle flying from his lips. He approached Daisy, and she began to cry. “This little morsel? She’s not even enough to take the edge off of the Wolf’s hunger!” Fenrir said, and snapped his fingers. The two werewolves holding Daisy let her go, and retreated to the edge of the dome. Daisy stood where she was, shaking slightly.

Fenrir began to circle her like a predator would his prey. “What a waste of space…” he rumbled. He stopped behind Daisy, and tilted his head. He reached forward and lifted the back of her purple skirt. She made a terrified sound, and whirled around, flipping the skirt down. “Very nice curves for one your age. I may have spoken too quickly. I don’t think I’ll kill you just yet. I might take you with me when I’m done dealing with my son…” he said, and made a pleased sound in the back of his throat.

~~

“Hermione!” Lucius exclaimed. Hermione’s wand tip was glowing, and she was murmuring to herself.

“This spell is very intricate. It’s in multiple layers. I have to go through each layer one at a time…” she said, just before a zap of magic struck the tip of her wand. She was thrown completely off of her feet, and landed hard on her bottom. A few people gasped when Ian appeared at the border of the dome, smiling down at Hermione.

“Alpha Fenrir said you might be the one to try and dismantle my dome. You won’t be able to get through it. I sealed it with my personal magical signature.” He said, looking pleased.

Lucius was at Hermione’s side, and he offered her his hand. He helped her to her feet, and then turned to Ian, his entire aura starting to build up magic. The very air around him felt thick with energy, like the atmosphere just before lightning struck.

“I just want Daisy. Your alpha can do whatever the hell he pleases with that boy. My cousin is innocent.” He said, his voice deadly calm. Some of the dancers around him started to back away as the magic began to crackle around his fingertips.

Ian looked grave. “There’s nothing I can do about that. Alpha Fenrir gets what he wants.” Lucius roared angrily, and fired a shot of electrical energy at the dome. It exploded on contact, and several people hit the ground to avoid the blast. But the spell only scorched the surface of the dome. Then, much to Lucius’ dismay, the scorch mark faded.

Ian only smiled.

“You leave her alone!” Phelan cried. He took a few steps forward, and Fenrir pulled Daisy flush against him. Phelan froze in his tracks and snarled. Fenrir’s hand rested across Daisy’s throat, and he lowered his head beside hers.

“It would be a simple thing to kill her. A twist of her tender little neck and it’s over.” He said softly. Daisy shuddered fearfully underneath the Alpha’s grasp, and tears began to stream down her face. She was scared spitless, too terrified to move. There were several moments of tense silence.

“P-please…” she finally sobbed. Fenrir snarled, and shoved her forward. She landed hard on some of the glass shrapnel from the ceiling, and the tender flesh on the underside of her arms was sliced by the sharp glass. She tried to push herself up, but only succeeded in getting glass in her palms as well. She began to cry in earnest, her small frame shaking.

All Phelan saw was red. With a bellow of rage he charged Fenrir. The large Alpha spread his feet apart, ready to take him on. Phelan slashed at his father, who dodged easily. Fenrir retaliated with a sweep of his claws. Phelan pulled his head back in time to keep from getting his eyes gouged out. Fenrir attacked quickly, punching Phelan in the gut. As he bent forward, Fenrir delivered a staggering uppercut, lifting Phelan completely off his feet. Phelan hit the ground hard, and his breath left him completely.

“Leave him alone you big bully!” Daisy sobbed. She un-clipped her crescent moon brooch from the front of her outfit, and threw it with all her might at Fenrir. The little piece of jewelry wasn’t big, but it pinged unpleasantly off of the werewolf’s head. Fenrir turned slowly towards Daisy, his fangs bared.

“How very naughty of you.” He growled, and started advancing on her. She tried to scramble up, and hissed when the glass sliced into her fingertips. She was on her feet, backing up as he approached her. “Do you know what happens to naughty little girls?” he asked. She was very close to hyperventilating. He shot forward, and grabbed her by the throat, lifting her off of her feet. He pulled her nose-to-nose with him, and she could smell his rancid breath. “They get thrashed.” And with that he dropped her and pulled her under one arm in a fluid motion, presenting her bottom to him. She screamed and stuggled uselessly against his superior strength. His hand lifted high, and came down hard on her bottom. It stung even through her leggings and the light protection of her skirt. She kicked out uselessly.

~~

Phelan took a deep, shuddering breath, and opened his eyes. The half-moon twinkled down at him through the clear barrier on the ceiling.

“Mother moon….the only mother I have ever known….you have never betrayed me. What do I do? I don’t think I’m a match for him. Help me.” He whispered.

Time seemed to freeze, and he felt black blooming at the edge of his vision. He blinked, and when he opened his eyes again, a large white wolf was standing over him. He sat up with a gasp and looked around. Everything was frozen where it was. No dancer moved, no werewolf took a breath. He looked at the wolf.

“Mother moon?” He asked.

Hello, little one. You called for me, and I am here. How may I help you?
