Breaking Moon

HM36

Hermione snatched her cell out of her purse at Draco\'s ring.

“What is it?” she asked into the phone.

“You need to be at the Ministry. Now,” Draco said on the other end of the line.

“Why?”

“Just get here, Granger. Bring my father with you if he\'s there.”

“I don\'t . . .”

“You don\'t have to understand. Bring my father, I\'m only going to have this explained one more time.”

“Fine,” Hermione said, sounding rather put out about the whole situation.

Draco hung up and turned to Arabella. It didn\'t seem she was doing so well after the situation. Luna had pressed tea into her hands along with a copy of the Quibbler. When Draco had raised an eyebrow at the last Luna had simply shrugged and said that even if Ara didn\'t believe anything written at least it might give her a good laugh. Draco couldn\'t exactly fault her, rather skewed, logic. Of course, she wouldn\'t be Luna without it.

Hermione had evidently found a fireplace that was connected to the Ministry, probably her own, because she arrived in a swirl of green flame closely followed by Lucius.

“Ara, what is it?” Lucius said, immediately going over to where she was sitting.

“As long as you don\'t think less of me for falling apart afterward, I\'ll tell you,” Arabella said, smiling weakly up at him.

“You were always good in a crisis, Ara. Afterward . . . What happened?”

“You were definitely right about at least me being targeted.”

“Oh, gods! I\'m so sorry, Ara,” Lucius said. “Are you all right? What happened?”

“I\'m as all right as I can be, Luc. I\'m alive, which is more than we can say for this bastard\'s other victims,” Arabella said, launching into the whole story and not stopping until the part about getting to the Ministry safely.

Lucius\' expression grew grimmer by the moment as he listened to Ara\'s tale. “Bastard,” he growled, glancing at Hermione then to his son.

When Ara finished the room was silent for a moment. Everyone digesting the information she had just given them and pondering what to do about the situation. It was Hermione who spoke first.

“I think,” she said slowly, “That we should inform Harry of this.”

“What the bloody hell for, Granger?” Draco asked through clenched teeth.

“Because, he has the lead in this investigation and the full bore of the Ministry behind him. Add to that, I never said we\'d stop investigating. An extra set of eyes couldn\'t hurt and Harry has been known to . . . bend a rule here and there in the past,” Hermione said, smiling fondly at a myriad of memories cascading through her mind.

Draco\'s eyes narrowed slightly. “I thought you didn\'t trust Potter anymore.”

“As a friend, no. As an investigator, absolutely.”

“Hermione is right,” Luna said. “Harry is thorough and tends to think out of the box more than anyone.”

Draco sighed and barely stifled another growl. “Fine. But if he even so much as thinks about putting Father back in Azkaban you and I will have a very long and unhappy conversation, Granger.”

“Agreed.”

Luna shrugged off all the tension in the room and picked up the mask lying on her desk. “I think I\'ll send this to a friend of mine in the muggle sciences. It may be possible to get a DNA sample from it. Arabella, I\'ll need a strand or two of your hair to exclude you from any hits in the databases.”

“I think that\'s a good plan, Luna,” Lucius said.

“Father, since Liren is your identical twin it would show up as your DNA. Remember that\'s what Hermione explained to us early on in the investigation.”

“I am perfectly well aware of that, Draco. However, there could be other indicators found. Isn\'t that correct, Dr. Lovegood?”

“It is indeed.”

“Talking of indicators,” Lucius said, smiling wryly. “Next time you and my son decide to be engaged in certain activities, I suggest a “No Smudge” spell for your lipstick, Dr. Lovegood.”
