Chapter 36: Wizard’s Oath
As soon as Harry entered the Great Hall he braced himself for Hermione’s flood of questions. He calmly sat down at the table thinking ‘5,4,3,2,1…’
“Harry did Professor Lupin tell you we were at your rooms this afternoon? Why were you asleep? Where were you this morning? Professor Lupin would not tell us anything and he practically threw us out of your rooms,” ranted Hermione.
Harry (who had been quietly filling his plate while Hermione ranted away) looked up at Hermione with a raised eyebrow.
“Are you done now,” he asked.
“Harry!”
“I was sleeping because I was tired. People usually do that you know,” drawled Harry. Hermione tutted.
“Remus did tell me you stopped by when I woke up which was just before I came here. He kicked you out because I was ASLEEP. I had a busy week and I just crashed.”
“But what did you have to do this morning that was so important? Ron said you would be busy this morning.”
‘She’s like a dog on a bone.’ “I actually told Ron we could get together this EVENING not in the AFTERNOON.”
Hermione glanced at Ron who looked sheepishly at the table.
“Harry where…”
“For the love of god Hermione what do you want from me? I had personal business to take care of at Gringotts.”
“What do you mean personal business?”
“Well as I said it was PERSONAL business which means it is MY BUSINESS NOT YOURS!”
Hermione started to protest but Harry had enough.
“Hermione ENOUGH! I’m hungry,” he pointed to his uneaten dinner, “and I’m going to eat now. I have no intention of answering any more questions so just quit it. Ok?”
“Fine,” huffed Hermione.
They ate their meals in silence. When Harry finished eating Ron spoke up.
“So can we come to your rooms now?”
“Sorry but Professor Dumbledore needs to meet with me this evening.”
“You said we could come over this evening,” complained Ron.
“What do you want me to do Ron? Tell the Headmaster, “Sorry Professor Dumbledore I know you think this meeting is important but Ron and I need to play chess instead, you will just have to wait.”
Seeing that Ron looked ready to agree with what Harry said Hermione jumped in.
“Of course not Harry,” she shot a glare at Ron who was about to protest (and backed down like a good little puppy err boyfriend should), “ we will see you tomorrow.”
Harry got up, said good night and with a nod to Remus headed out of the Great Hall. Remus met up with him in the hallway.
“Albus will be down shortly,” said Remus.
“Fine.”
“Did Hermione have a few questions?”
Harry rolled his eyes and shook his head.
“She let me sit down at least.”
They laughed and kept walking to their rooms.
Once inside Harry’s rooms Harry collapsed on the sofa. He sighed and closed his eyes. Remus sat down beside him.
“Am I doing the right thing by telling Professor Dumbledore everything? What if he won’t take the oath? How much can I tell him?”
“I don’t know love. I’m pretty sure he will take the oath. I do think you need to tell him everything. When the truth comes out he will be able to help you deal with the Ministry.”
“You’re right. Should we tell him about us?”
“I don’t know about that. Let’s see how the rest of the talk goes. I will be here beside you no matter what.”
“Thanks,” said Harry. He pecked Remus on the lips.
There was a knock on the door and Harry tensed. Remus gave Harry a quick kiss and got up to answer the door. Albus followed Remus into the room and took a seat in the armchair facing the sofa. Remus sat back down beside Harry.
“Good evening Professor Dumbledore.”
“Good evening Harry. Feeling better I hope?”
“Much better thank you. A nap definitely helped.”
“I have given the matter of the oath some thought,” stated Dumbledore. “Are you sure that keeping this information from the Order is necessary? It will not compromise any work the Order is doing?”
“Yes to both questions sir. What I have to tell you is about me. Voldermort or the Ministry cannot know it at this time. The Order has to many Ministry employees; I cannot take the risk of this getting out. Only Remus knows the whole truth because I trust him completely.”
“But you do not trust me,” said Dumbledore.
“I’m sorry sir but I do not know how you will take this news and without the oath forcing you to keep it secret it may be to tempting to tell someone.”
“Very well Harry. I will swear an oath but I hope you know what you are doing. You may be risking more by not telling others.”
“Trust me Albus, Harry is right to insist on an oath,” said Remus. “I would like to swear one to you as well Harry.”
“That’s not necessary,” said Harry.
“I insist. I would never willingly tell someone but this will protect the secret from someone trying to force it out of me. Werewolves are natural occlumens but a very strong legilimens could possibly see parts of it without the oath.”
“Ok, if you think you should,” said Harry.
“Let’s do this gentlemen,” said Dumbledore.
“Professor will you go first,” asked Harry.
“Fine Harry.”
They all stood up, coming together in the middle of the room. Albus and Harry joined hands with Remus laying his wand on top of their clasped hands. Remus began to speak.
“Do you Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore swear to keep secret anything Harry James Potter tells you here today?”
“I will.”
“You swear that you will not repeat this information verbally, written, through pensieve memory, legilimency or any truth potions?”
Albus raised an eyebrow at the last line but answered “yes.”
A ribbon of light surrounded their clasped hands sealing the bond. They repeated the process with Remus and when finished Albus and Remus sat back down. Harry started to pace.
“Where to start,” Harry said. “I guess I will start with the parts you know all ready.” He paused. “As you know I came into my majority powers on my birthday. You know I can perform wandless magic you just do not know how much I can do wandless.” He paused looking to Remus for support. Remus nodded and smiled at Harry.
“I do not need to use a wand for anything, at least anything I have tried.”
“Anything? What do you mean,” asked Dumbledore.
“I only use my wand in class to mask my ability. I can perform any spell I have tried wandless and for the most part wordless as well. Most times better than using a wand. I found a wand in my vault that works even better than my old wand but even then I rarely ever use it away from the public eye.”
Dumbledore looked very surprised. “Is this the big secret?”
Harry laughed.
“This is one of the smaller ones I’ve been keeping, at least after today’s revelations.”
Professor Dumbledore was speechless. ‘If this is a small secret what else could Harry be hiding?’
Remus quietly called for a house-elf and requested a tea service. When the elf popped back out he turned to the others.
“I think we need some tea right now.”
“Yes I think you are right,” said Albus. “If the rest of your secrets are anything like this one then perhaps never-ending tea is needed.”
The others laughed and when the house-elf popped back into the room with the tea service they settled down to drink their tea.
“So are you ready to hear my second secret,” asked Harry.
“Yes my boy, at least I hope so,” chuckled Dumbledore.
Harry began to speak.
