Bonds
--Hiya, if you read ch 33 before Oct 1st, please go back and re-read it, cos I've added a few things I'd forgotten.
--Thanks for the comments. I didn't intend this to be a Bonding story, but it's certainly heading that way, and yes, I'm trying to do something different with it. SP
Chapter Thirty-FOur
"Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion has no hold on the mind." Plato

Ron and Hermione were waiting to visit Harry. They had popped along at odd times, hoping to catch him awake. As the week had worn on, they had seen more and more of him. Now they were waiting for Dumbledore and Snape to leave so that they could visit their friend.
Hermione had heard the previous day’s argument and had gone, as was expected, straight to the library. What she had read there had disturbed her, which was why she and the red head were waiting so impatiently.
“He wouldn’t, ‘Mione.” Ron tried to reassure her.
“Oh yes he would!” she asserted, chewing her lower lip and looking at the cover of the book she had borrowed – with some difficulty – from Madam Pince.
“‘The Secrets of the Bonding Ceremony’,” Ron read. “That sounds fascinating.”
“It is.” She replied shortly. “It’s just a pity Harry hasn’t read it.”
At that moment the two teachers came through the door, Albus was speaking intently to Snape, but too quietly for the two Gryffindors to catch. Snape’s response was telling, “No, Albus. It is much too dangerous, regardless of what he said.”
“But you did say …” Albus broke off at the sight of the two students. “Ah! Come to visit your friend? And bringing him a book to read? How thoughtful.” His keen blue eyes glanced down at the tome before they flicked to Severus’ angry face. “Perhaps we should continue this in my study.”
“Perhaps you should leave me alone, Albus. It will not take place.”
As the two men left, Hermione was sure she’d heard Dumbledore mutter, “Always so stubborn.”
Cautiously, the two entered the room.
Harry sat up in bed, pieces of parchment around him, scribbling things and occasionally rubbing his stomach.
“Harry?”
“Ron! ‘Mione!” he cried, gleefully clutching a handful of paper. “Look! Sev and I are going to Bond!”
The pair exchanged a look before approaching the bed.
“Harry,” Hermione began tentatively, “do you know what a Bond is?”
“It’s like a marriage,” Harry answered impatiently, gathering up the sheets to make room for his friends, “At least, that’s what Dumbledore says.”
“And god knows Dumbledore’s never lied to you,” Ron muttered sourly.
Hermione butted in before Harry could retort. “I heard your discussion with Snape yesterday, so I researched the Bonding Ceremony. Harry, it’s so risky! Look…” she opened the book at a page that had been carefully bookmarked, and read, “Same sex Bonds are inherently unstable. Only with great force of character, or with the application of the Stablising Draught can the Bond hope to survive.” She glanced at him. “Harry, if the Bond fails, and there’s a chance of that, you could die, or go mad.”
Harry shook his head. “But the Bond won’t fail. Sev and I love each other.”
Hermione drew a deep breath, covering Ron’s “Urgh!”, “Maybe so, but same sex Bonds are problematic. This book talks about some of the things that can go wrong.”
Harry cut across her, a slight frown marring his pleasant face. “Look, when I was captured, I knew Severus would save me, I knew it. He protected me. I wasn’t even hurt during my capture because he looked after me.” He looked earnestly into her face, “So please don’t suggest the Bond will fail. We belong together.”
“URGH!” Ron couldn’t control his feelings any longer. “Harry, what’s happened to you? You were never gushy before. How come you’re all over Snape now? You’re acting like some idiotic love struck girl!”
“What do you mean, Ronald Weasley, an idiotic love struck girl?” Hermione glowered.
Harry could see a row brewing between Ron and Hermione and tried to diffuse the situation. “I guess I never really appreciated all that Sev did for me before. But since being caught, I’ve realised how important he is to me and Sapphire. That’s why I’m sure the Bond will go ahead. And we’ll be fine.” Harry sounded almost defiant.
Hermione shook her head sadly. There was so much Harry didn’t know, and Ron was right (despite being deeply annoying); Harry was behaving like an idiotic love struck girl. She would never have believed Harry would have gone gooey over anyone, let alone their snarky potions teacher.
She got up sadly, putting the book on Harry’s bedside table. “At least promise me you’ll read the pages I’ve marked.” She said, looking sad and disappointed. “We’d better go, we’ve got work to do.” She turned away from the boy on the bed. “Come on, Ron.”
The red head got up and whispered to Harry, “I hate to say it, mate, but she’s always right. Read the book, yeah?”
Harry looked as though he was chewing a wasp, but he nodded in agreement.
“Thanks.”

“I truly do not see your objection to the proposal.” Albus badgered Severus as they strode along the corridors. Snape had increased his pace, but the older man, despite his injured state, was keeping up easily.
“I spoke without thought when I said I wanted to Bind with him.” Severus ground out, sure he’d lost a tooth or two.
“But Severus,” Albus began, but the other bit him off.
“No, Albus. I have given the matter thought. If the war were safely over I might consider it, but not now. Not when a Bond of our nature would be dependent upon a potion. If something were to go wrong, and the draught could not be administered, the consequences would be severe. It would be even more foolhardy given my role in this war. I can hardly go to the Dark Lord and admit I have Bonded with the boy. He knows of Love magic, despite not believing in Love as a force, and would know just what that meant regarding my feelings for the lad.” He shook his head decidedly, long black hair swishing around his pale face. “No Albus, it is too dangerous.”
A softly spoken question from Dumbledore stopped him in his tracks. He had not considered the other would be so ruthless and callous of his wishes.
“And supposing I ordered you?”
--Naughty, naughty Albus!
Harry: Sick old fuck!
Sev: What he said.
SP: Don't you want to know what happens?
Harry and Sev: NO!
SP: Oh well. Well, if other folks do, they can let me know.
Sev: *cough* Review whore! *cough*
