Chapter 33
“So why have you never married?” Chloe asked him over a cup of wine. They were still outdoors and huddled together. She raised her eyebrows at his look of bewilderment.
“You could not possibly be serious.” he spat.
“I am serious. I mean you’re handsome and smart and…well I could go on for days really….” She laughed at the look on his face. “It’s a question Severus!” She turned her face to fully face his profile.
“I was never allowed to marry at first.” His voice was soft and almost a whisper. “When I was…when I worked for The Dark Lord…Voldemort…he wanted me to remain unattached to anyone and everything except him and my task at hand. Afterwards…well...you hear what everyone says.” He took another drink from his wine and never once looked at Chloe as he spoke.
“Sorry Severus. I just thought…oh never mind.” He finally did turn to face her.
“You thought what exactly?” he narrowed his eyes as he spoke to her.
“I just thought since you were somewhat famous that a lot of women would be after you…that’s all.” Chloe now felt completely stupid.
“Not many women want a murderer, and a former Death Eater as a mate.” his voice was empty and the look on his face made Chloe’s heart ache.
“Never mind Severus, it was a stupid question.” Chloe felt embarrassed for him. Embarrassed for herself as well. How could she be so tactless? He went to all this trouble for her, and what did she do? She poured salt on a wound.
They sat in silence for a moment and Chloe leaned her head on his shoulder. She felt his body heat against her skin and she felt the pangs of guilt hit her heart.
“I’m cold Severus. But I don’t want to leave. This was so beautiful…” She kissed his cheek, softly and tenderly. He leaned in for the kiss and Chloe saw him close his eyes. So she kissed him again. He leaned in closer still, so she turned his face towards her with her hands. “Severus…I think you are the most wonderful person I have ever met. For you to do the things you have done…is unbelievable. And yet….you still have it in you to do something this incredibly…perfect for me. You are nothing short of amazing.” She kissed him lightly on the lips, noting as she did so, the stunned expression on his face.

They walked, arm in arm, back towards the castle. Everything was still and quiet as they went. In the distance, an owl hooted in the trees. The stars were bright in the sky. Behind them, something splashed in the lake. Chloe turned her head and Severus chuckled.
“Scared of the dark?” She snorted with indignation, but he was partially right.
“Don’t worry. It as the giant squid eating the rest of our picnic.” he continued chuckling at the lokof sheer horror on her face. He urged her to stop looking at the lake and to continue walking.
She was about to ask him what the hell was a giant squid doing in the lake when he froze. Chloe looked up at his face and saw his once soft features hard and void of all emotion.
“Do not move. Stay near me.” he spoke out f the corner of his mouth. His eyes were trained on a shadow in the distance.
The shadow of a man….
