The Heart of the Issue
When Hermione got back to her common room, she decided to wait for Draco. She was ready to have a talk with him. She opened a text book, and was studying intently when suddenly she heard him come in.
Draco was surprised to see Hermione out and about; and it was truly refreshing to see her doing something normal. When his eyes met hers he saw intent there; his wife was resigned to do or say something. Draco made his way over to the couch and sat down.
Hermione waited as her husband came back to the couch. She held in her breath without realizing that she was doing so and then suddenly exhaled. She turned toward her husband and said, “Draco, we need to talk.”
Draco realized that this might be the first progress that he had seen from her, and wanted to tread very carefully. Draco nodded to allow her the space to say what she needed to say.
Hermione continued, “Draco, I haven’t been fair to you, or to us. As you know, I was so stupid and allowed myself to be taken by them,” Hermione started crying at this. Draco was about to interrupt her, but thought better of it. He felt perhaps it would be better to let her get it all out.
She said, “I didn’t mean to let this happen. I only wanted to protect our baby and protect you. I didn’t mean to not be on my guard, I’m so sorry…I’m so sorry Draco.”
Draco’s heart was breaking at this point. He replied, “The only one who should be apologizing here is me; it was my job to protect our family. I let you down. If it weren’t for me, none of this would have ever happened to you. Please understand that you did nothing wrong; it’s not your fault, and I love you as much today as the day we got married.”
Hermione threw her arms around Draco at this last declaration; it was exactly what she needed to hear. All this time she had been shutting him out, but it was because she felt responsible, and she felt that he would never look at her the same way again.
Hermione said, “Draco, I know it’s going to take some time, but I want to get my life back. I want to get our marriage back on track. I want to be able to raise our child together. I don’t know if I’m ready to have a physical relationship with you yet...” her voice was quivering at this last remark.
Draco held her chin so that he could look directly into her eyes and said, “Hermione, love, you can take as long as you need. I love you, and I know you still love me, and that’s enough for me right now.”
Hermione was so relieved at this that she reached forward and placed a soft kiss on his lips. They were still as warm and perfect as she remembered. Draco was surprised at the bold move, but smiled at the fact that his wife was coming back to him.
