Chapter 31
Going to Sleep Angry

Hermione stretched her arms high above her head. She took notice that Draco wasn’t there, but lately that had become the norm.

She swung her legs over the side of the bed and scratched her head sleepily.

Slipping off the bed, she made her way to her trunk and gathered her clothing.

She crossed the common room, noticing Draco was not present there either.

She undressed and showered quickly and stepped out, drying off, then letting her towel fall to the floor.

She turned to the side and appraised naked herself in the full-sized mirror.

Her stomach was round and protruding from her body. A small pearly white stretch mark had begun to form over her right hip and extending gracefully toward her belly button.

Her breasts were swollen and sore when she touched them.

She frowned deeply, her eyes almost brimming with tears.

“Good Morning, Love!” Draco called, bursting into the bathroom.

Hermione gasped and quickly grabbed her towel, clutching it to her naked body.

“Uh, good morning.” she said, ignoring the look of confusion on his face. “I was just um getting out of the shower.”

His eyes narrowed as if he were studying her intently.

“Yes, well,” he began, never taking his eyes off her. “When you’re finished, come into the bedroom. I have something to show you.”

He gave her a once over before turning and exiting the bathroom.

Hermione jerked on her uniform quickly, slightly interested in what Draco had to say.

When she stepped into the bedroom, she noticed he had laid out her new monogrammed robes Narcissa had taken the liberty of having made for her.

“What\'s this all about?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Come, sit.” he said, patting the bed next to him.

She eyed him warily, before reluctantly joining him.

“Now, before I give you this,” he said, giving her a stern eye. “I want you to know this comes with no obligations.”

She looked at him in confusion when he took out a small package.

“I owled Mother last and had her send this straight away.”

He opened the package slowly and Hermione’s eyes widened and her mouth hung open.

It was a ring, a beautiful ring actually. The stone was a bit larger than a marble, cut in a beautiful hexagonal shape. It was a deep scarlet and the beauty of it made her gaze at it in awe.

“It’s a blood diamond.” Draco added, tipping her chin up to look at him. “There are very few in existence. This was my Mothers and her mother’s before her and her mother’s before her.” He slipped it onto Hermione’s finger. “and now it’s yours.”

Hermione looked at the platinum band wrapped around her finger.

“I....I still don’t understand.” she asked, her mouth still hanging open.

“Well,” he smirked. “You see, Pansy has had her beady little eye upon it since we were 8 actually. In Potion’s today when she begins with the animal noises, and you know she will,” he added with a second smirk. “flash it at her.”

Hermione’s face twisted into a grin.

“That’s just evil!” she giggled. “I love it! Do you really think this will work though?”

“Trust me,” he smiled, kissing her hand. “Oh, and wear the robe. It’ll make it that much worse.”

Hermione covered her mouth with her hand, sniggering with glee.

She hadn’t felt this giddy since her first day at Hogwarts.

Hermione practically floated through her entire day. Every time she thought of Potions, her stomach tingled and she couldn’t repress a smile.

She almost skipped into the classroom, then caught herself.

She hung her head as usual, pulling her robe tightly around her.

She slid into her seat next to Draco, unable to repress her smile when their eyes met.

Hermione waited and for a moment, she almost thought Pansy might have given up, but no such luck.

“Moo!” Pansy sniggered from behind her.

Hermione’s smile stretched all the way to her eyes.

She stretched her arms high over her head, then looped her arm around Draco’s shoulder, deliberately turning her hand to meet Pansy’s view.

Her ears were met with a noise that sounded very much like a moose being strangled.

She free hand over her mouth discreetly.

Draco pulled her arm further around his shoulder and brought her hand around to look at it.

“You know,” he smirked, his voice loud enough for Pansy to overhear. “that ring is absolutely breath-taking on your hand. Mother agrees. She said she wouldn’t have given it to any other woman.”

Hermione smiled, wondering if that were true.

“Yes,” Hermione replied. “And it was so nice of Narcissa to buy these robes for me!”

Pansy made another noise that reminded Hermione of that same strangled moose being crucioed.

Snape entered the classroom in a swish of robes.

Hermione was felt her eyelids drooping. Her previous glee was long gone and now she was just bored and sleepy.

thump...thump thump.........

She smiled broadly and reached over and took Draco’s hand, slipping it inside her robe.

He cast a glance at her and raised an eyebrow.

“Feeling frisky?” he whispered with a smirk and received a sharp glare in reply.

He opened his mouth to speak again, then his eyes widened.

“I FEEL IT!!” he cried, jumping up from his chair and letting it fall backward behind him.

Hermione’s mouth fell open.

He was wild-eyed and obviously extremely excited.

“Well, Mr. Malfoy,” Snape began “though I appreciate your obvious enthusiasm for the uses of Dragon’s Blood, please try to contain yourself in the future.”

The whole class sniggered.

“10 points from Gryffindor for speaking out of turn.” Snape added silkily before returning to the blackboard.

The Gryffindors sighed and muttered under their breath.

Draco, on the other hand, sat happily with his hand crazy glued to Hermione’s stomach.

Every now and then he could feel the baby wiggle and his grin broadened.

He couldn’t have been more pleased if he were just declared King of the free world.

Hermione had to admit, today was one of the best days of her life.

Every time she had flashed her ring at Pansy, she made a sound like she was having a stroke.

She was almost skipping to the library.

She fumbled with her parchment, letting her eyes wander over it and mentally compiled the list of books she needed.

She situated herself once again in the back aisle of the library, her books scattered about.

She let her mind disappear once again in “Popular Potions” and barely noticed the shadow being cast over her.

“You filthy mudblood bitch!” Pansy hissed from above her. “You know you don’t deserve that ring on your vile, fat finger!”

“Well, obviously Narcissa thinks I do. What was it she referred to you as? That horrible little Parkinson girl?” Hermione smirked and extended her arm to admire the ring at arms length.

“You’re disgusting.” Pansy snarled. “I mean honestly, have you seen yourself lately? You’re fat and you waddle. We‘re going to have to widen the door frames to get you through.”

Pansy covered her mouth and sniggered.

Hermione was attempting to ignore her, hoping that she would get bored and go away, but her words were sinking in and they stung like needles.

She leaned in very close to Hermione. “Draco will eventually get tired of playing house with you, Darling. I mean really, can you see Draco changing diapers for the rest of his life? No, of course you can’t. And when he kicks you aside, he will come running back to me and I will take great pleasure in ripping that gorgeous ring right off your foul finger.”

Hermione kept her head down, not wanting to give her the satisfaction of seeing her tears.

The shadow cast over her once again.

“You know, why don’t you go straight to hell!” Hermione spat. “Just take your sorry ass somewhere else and leave me alone!”

“I....I’m sorry...” Ron stuttered, his eyes deeply saddened.

“Ron!” Hermione cried, feeling terribly embarrassed. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t realize it was you.”

Ron raised an eyebrow at her.

“I just had a run-in with Pansy.” Hermione frowned.

“I see.” he said, still giving her an odd look.

“So...um...do you need something?” she asked.

“I....well...I thought you wanted help with Potions...Maybe I should just go.”

Ron turned and began to walk back toward the front of the Library.

“No, no!” Hermione called after him. “You can stay if you’d like.”

She gave him a soft smile, which he returned and then sat down beside her.

Her eyes lighted on a small bag draped over his shoulder.

“What’s that?” she asked, feeling a little uncomfortable.

“Well,” he smiled opening it. “I kind of stopped by the kitchen on the way up here.”

He began to pull out large amounts of Canary Creams, pumpkin pasties, chocolate iced cookies and two large flasks of pumpkin juice.

She eyed the food warily, Pansy’s insults still ringing in her ears.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, his eyes saddening again. “It didn’t spit in it or anything.”

“No, its not that.” she said, frowning. “I just...I’m getting really fat.”

Ron laughed out loud at her.

“You’re pregnant, Hermione!”

“I know, I know.” she sighed. “I just didn’t think I’d get this big.”

He raised his eyebrow at her.

“You’re not even a 1/4 as big as your going to get, you know this right?” he asked.

“Huh?” she asked, her eyes widening in fear.

“I mean, you’re only how many months?”

“I’m in my 5th.” she replied.

“Right, which means the baby isn’t very big right now. Wait until she starts putting on weight. When Mum was pregnant with Ginny she couldn’t even get off the couch without help by the time her 9th month rolled around. I mean, you can clearly see you‘re pregnant, but its still in the cute stage.” he smiled at her.

Hermione groaned and buried her face in her hands.

“And there\'s no way to avoid it?” she asked glumly. “Maybe if I watch what I eat or cut back or something?”

“Yea, if you want the baby to get sick!” Ron said, scowling at her. “Watching what you eat is always good, but don’t even think about skipping meals! Hermione, did Pansy say something to you?”

Hermione frowned in reply.

“Don’t let that miserable cow get to you. She’s just jealous. She’d amputate a body part to be in your shoes right now. You‘re a million times more beautiful than she is, even pregnant.”

She smiled bleakly up at him.

“Thank you.” she said.

“You’re welcome.” he smiled back at her.

The two of them chatted and ate, Hermione somehow managing to get a small chunk of her homework done in the midst of conversation.

Soon, she noticed the sun had gone down and figured Draco was probably getting worried.

“Well, I think that\'s enough work for tonight.” she said, closing her book and sliding it onto a nearby shelf.

Ron stood up and extended his hand to her, helping her up off the floor.

“Same time tomorrow then?” he asked.

“Sure.” she smiled back at him, before giving him a quick hug and exiting the library.

When she entered the common room, she seen Draco had taken the liberty of bringing dinner up for her.

He was sleeping soundly on the common room couch.

“Hey...” she leaned forward and whispered softly into his ear.

His eyes blinked and then opened.

“Hey.” he smiled back shifting his position on the couch so that his arms were wrapped around her waist. “Where have you been?”

“Oh, just the library.” she said, brushing a stray piece of hair off his forehead.

“Oh, I was slightly worried when you didn’t show up at dinner.” he frowned.

“Well, I have a lot of work to finish up and so do you. You should think about getting that started.” she said, giving him a stern glare.

“I know, I know. Are you hungry?” he asked.

“Nah, I don’t think so. I think I just want to go to bed.”

She stood up and felt him following closely behind her.

As soon as the portrait clicked closed, he seized her around the waist and pulled her close against him, his lips trailing kisses down her neck.

Her body stiffened and her mind spun wildly.

For the first time in their relationship, she didn’t want Draco to see her nude.

“Draco, I’m really tired, okay?” she said, gently pushing him away.

His kisses grew more insistent and his hands roamed over her hips, then across her stomach.

She panicked and pushed him away roughly.

“I said I’m tired, can’t we just leave it at that.” she cried, covering her eyes with her hand in frustration.

He eyed her oddly, his brows furrowed together in confusion and anger.

“You know what, fine!” he replied, crawling onto his side of the bed and turning his back to her.

Hermione sighed heavily, blew out the candles, and crawled onto her side, her back to him as well.
