Chapter 31: Surprises

The Library:

“Oh, Marcus,” said Terry. He looked at his oblivious friend with a grin. Marcus was chewing his lower lip and had a far away look on his face. Marcus only chewed his lip when he was nervous and agitated.

“Marcus,” said Adrian loudly.

“What?” said Marcus as he snapped back to attention.

“We are supposed to be studying for NEWTS,” pointed out Terry. “I thought you were actually going to take them this year.”

“I know,” said Marcus with a sigh. “But studying is dead boring.”

“I know,” moaned Adrian with a pout.

“Besides, I have bigger fish to fry,” said Marcus with a frown. “It is Katie’s birthday on Friday and I have absolutely no idea what to get her.”

“Jewelry,” said Terry.

“I’ve gotten her jewelry already,” said Marcus with a frown. “I want to get her something special.”

“You’ve given her a sprog already,” said Adrian with a smirk. “So that’s out.”

“Bugger off Ade,” growled Marcus.

“A ‘romantic’ evening,’ said Terry with an eyeroll. “You know how much the witches always want a bloke to be all romantic. She’ll love it. Roses, a candlelight dinner, some suitably nauseatingly romantic gift ‘from the heart’ and you’ll be set. She’ll shag you for the rest of the night.”

“You think?” asked Marcus skeptically.

“I think so,” said Adrian with a thoughtful look. “Maybe make it a surprise. Have it the night before her birthday. She won’t be expecting it.”

“That’s not a horrible idea,” said Marcus thoughtfully. “Just in case, I’ll owl my mother and ask her to pick out something sparkly for Katie for me.”

“Can we get back to studying,” said Terry with a smirk. “Now that we have Marcus’s love life sort

“Yes,” grumbled Adrian. “Wait here comes Tarquin.”

“Tarquin,” said Marcus with a grin. “I had no idea that you even knew where the Library was. Are you lost?”

“Please Marcus,” said Tarquin with a grin. “You are not the only Slytherin who has had a shag or two in the stacks. My Ravenclaws always want to study. It’s dead annoying.”

“What brings you out?” asked Adrian as he stretched.

“I can’t find Derrick, that prat,” said Tarquin with a pout. “I had a double date with this delicious redhead. She wanted to bring her friend so Derrick agreed to come. But I can’t find that utter wanker.”

“Go ask Alec to help you,” said Adrian. “He went to go look for a book. He’ll be back straight away.”

“Why?” asked Tarquin with a look of confusion. “Adrian, you have never let me down before.”

“Daria is coming soon,” said Adrian mildly.

“I’d say she is,” said Terry under his breath.

Tarquin gave Terry a hard look and then turned his suspicious eyes on Adrian.

“Daria,” mused Tarquin. “Adrian, you aren’t going to be your usual self with her are you?” He squared his shoulders and gave his mate a serious look from his bright green eyes.

“What do you mean?” asked Adrian.

“You are not going to break her heart, are you?” asked Tarquin seriously. “What exactly are your intentions towards my cousin?”

“I…I’m not sure what you’re asking,” sputtered Adrian.

“Ade,” said Terry with a surpressed smirk. “Tarquin is asking if you are intending on marrying Daria.”

“But I am only eighteen,” pointed Adrian with surprise.

“Marcus is only eighteen,” said Tarquin beadily.

“Marcus is well…Marcus,” said Adrian with a slight edge of panic in his voice.

“Daria is only eighteen, too,” said Adrian.

“Witches tend to marry earlier than wizards,” said Tarquin steadily and intently.

“But….” stuttered Adrian.

“Tarquinnius Cornelius Bole,” said Daria from behind her cousin. She stood with her hands on her hips. “What are you doing?”

“Help me, love,” said Adrian with a pleading look at his witch.

“Are you scaring Adrian, on purpose?” asked Daria sternly. “You know that marriage is serious business esallyally in our family. The marriage contracts takes years alone. Do not go freaking Adrian out with the specter of a wand out wedding.”

“I’m sorry, Daria,” said Tarquin contritely. “I was trying to see much it would take to get Ade here to run screaming from the library. I had him pretty close.”

“Wanker,” said Adrian feelingly.

“That is all right,” said Daria as she patted Tan’s n’s face. “Just you wait until you bring your first witch around to meet the family. I am going to be merciless. I’ll even take her to see that picture of Great Uncle Julius.”

“You are such an evil, little thing,” said Tarquin affectionately. “ It will, of course, be w dew decades until you can do that.”

“I’ll wait,” said Daria serenely.

“What’s wrong with Great Uncle Julius?” asked Terry with curiosity.

“Where does one begin?” said Tarquin with a grimace.

Much later, after they were alone in the library, Adrian held Daria’s hand.

“Do you think about marriage, Daria?” asked Adrian hesitantly. “After all, Alec and Marcus are both getting married shortly.”

“No,” saariaaria serenely.

“We are young,” said Adrian hesitantly.

“I know,” said Daria with a sweet smile. “A lot of girls are thinking about it but I am not in a hurry. I don’t have to marry for galleons or social position.”

“Oh,” said Adrian. The line that was creasing his forehead disappeared. His eyes lightened. A short silence fell between them.

“How is Mariah?” asked Adrian.

“She’s very quiet,” said Daria was she bit her lip. “She seems to be very depressed. But she sometimes has spells like that where she lies in bed for hours. I’ll try to get her to talk.”

“I heard that you and Mariah were going to Asia on your gap year,” said Adrian.

“Yes,” said Daria. “My parents are a bit hesitant but I’ll talk them around. I just love to travel and see the world.”

“Marcus and Alec were supposed to come on our tour,” said Adrian. “But they are getting married instead. Would you and Daria like to join Terry and I? We could travel together.”

“That’s a brilliant idea,” said Daria as her eyes lit up. “Then my parents wouldn’t be so afraid to let me travel.”

“We should talk some more but I have mentioned it to Ter and he thinks it’s brilliant. I mean we have booked the portkeys already for four people. We wouldn’t have to change anything, now.”

“But we would have to come back for the Quidditch World cup,” said Daria seriously.

“You are a woman after my own heart,” said Adrian as a warm smile filled his handsome face.
/> />
“I’ll make sure Tarquin gets those tickets,” said Daria. She also made a mental note to kick Tarquin, as well. He nearly scared Adrian off. She had to do some fast thinking but everything turned out wonderfully. They were going to spend their gap year together. Daria gave Adrian’s hand an affectionate squeeze.

The North Tower:

Alicia looked up at the opening door with a frown on her tirece. She She had laid awake all night thinking. Her mind going in never ending circles about something Terry had said. It stuck in the back of her mind. As soon as she could, she had gone back to her room and looked into her journal. She wrompormportant things down in it - the day she and Terry broke up, the day of the Quidditch final, her periods. She could not remember when her last period had been until she looked in her journal.

She was late –very late. Since she had been thirteen, her period had come like clockwork. Alicia had counted back and she knew, in her heart, that there was only one candidate.

“Angus,” whispered Alicia as she saw his familiar face as Derrick opened the door.

“Ally,” said Angus lowly. “I got your note. Is there something wrong?”

“Did you fuck me that night because you were playing some perverse game with Terry?” said Ally quickly and somewhat angrily. She had wanted to confront Derrick for days about it.

“What are you on about?” asked Angus confused. He closed the door and walked towards her.

“Your game,” clarified Ally. “The one where you fuck Terry’s girlfriends then he fucks yours.”

“Oh,” said Angus with a nod. “We haven’t played that game for ages. Besides, we called a truce.”

“When?”

“The night we fooled around with each other,” said Derrick with a shrug and a wicked smile.

“The why-“ Alicia was cut off when Derrick hauled her to her feet and pinned her struggling body against his hard chest.

“I fucked you that night because I wanted to,” said Derrick, his voice dipping huskily as he looked into her flushed face. “And you wanted me too. Don’t deny it. You never once asked me to stop, even when you had no idea who I was.”

Alicia panted as she looked into Angus’s dark slumberous eyes. When he claimed her mouth in scorchingly hot passionate kiss, she surrendered to her desire and kissed him back. They kissed frantically until Ally wrenched her mouth away with a low cry.

“Don’t stop,” urged Angus as he kissed the sides of her swollen mouth coaxingly. Ally moaned as she allowed herself to kiss him aback again for a few heart-stopping minutes. Then she pushed herself resolutely away from Derrick.

“I’m late,” said Ally. Her heart was pounding.

“For what?” asked Angus with a puzzled look.

“I am late with my period,” whispered Ally as her cheeks flamed.

“Why?….but….then,” stuttered Derrick. His face suddenly went a pale shade of parchment. “Oh Gods…I am going to fucking kill Tarquin.” He closed his eyes.

“What?” asked Ally. Her face was pale as well.

“Did you have some of the bacchanal feast?” asked Derrick intently.

“No,” said Ally. “I was drinking and I don’t like honey cakes.”

“I can’t remember if I did, either,” said Angus as he tightly reined in his sudden sense of panic. “Tarquin’s mead had a fertility drug in it, as part of the aphrodisiac effect. But usually everyone partakes of the feast. Tarquin said that the feast would nullify the fertility potion’s effects.”

“You can’t remember if you hay,” y,” said Ally as she sank down on a ratty old sofa with a rising sense of horror.

“No,” said Derrick as he sat beside her.

“Oh Gods, Angus,” breathed Alicia. “Am I pregnant?”

“I…I came inside you at least four times,” said Angus as he reached over and held her very cold hand.

“I know,” whispered Alicia. Her fingers tightened on his warm hand. “It could only be you. Terry uses a potion.”

“Gods,” said Angus. “Terry.”

“Yes,” said Alicia lowly. “Terry.”

Durmstrang Castle:

Billy folded thvancvance copy of the Daily Prophet with a satisfied smirk. She smoothed the newspaper with a caressing hand.

“Good news from home?” asked a housemate.

“Yes,” purred Billy. “A little birthday present for a deard frd friend.”

“Happy Birthday, Katie Bell,” thought Billy Bletchley with a sudden, mad little laugh that had her housemates giving her apprehensive looks.
