Arriving outside her old apartment she reached for the handle, and felt the burn into her palm. Oh, Merlin! She wasn’t invited in, she didn’t live here anymore!

She banged frantically ignoring the blistering on her palms form the security wards, desperately trying to get air into her lungs, to get moisture into her throat to make a sound. Swallowing convulsively she gagged, unable to do more than squeak before it was over.

She heard a pop and then a fist crashed across her face that sent her careening to the floor. She saw a kaleidoscope of colors as her head thumped against the ground. A hand reached out, choking her as the figure lifted her to standing.

She tasted metal in her mouth and saw a puddle of blood when she spit. Her tongue swelled, colors blurred in front of her. “Now, now. I didn’t want to do that.” It murmured apologetically.

She threw her head forward, making contact with her assailant’s nose. He dropped her, eerily laughing, grabbing at the sash on her coat. The sash broke, but did what it was intended to do.

Two arms forced themselves down over her, dragging her back. “I don’t think you’re going to need this.” Said the voice in her ear, a hand reaching for her wand.

Hermione forced herself to stay relatively calm, swallowing as much as she could, but the iron arm across her torso wasn’t letting her breathe. Get air. It was the only thing she could think of.

“I have my wand little girl, so lets make a deal.” He licked her ear. Well, that explained why none of the nonverbal spells she had been casting worked.

He’s shielding.

Hermione cringed away from his mouth, elbowed him hard and managed a quick breath. Ignoring the pain, she forced whatever energy she had left in her petite frame and screamed as loud as she could.

She heard Draco’s corresponding yell inside the apartment.
Please, Merlin, please help me.

“You have a choice. Defend yourself, or defend that thing who is undoubtedly coming to try and save you.” Hermione saw his wand appear under her own, pointing at the door, which wrenched open.

Hermione knew there was no choice. She would rather die a million times over than to see Draco hurt in any way.

“Non nocere contego!” she screamed, taking the only comfort available that Draco was safe before being apparated away.

Draco still had that goofy smile on his face while he sent a message off to Potter and then proceeded to get changed. He just managed to pull on a pair of sweatpants when he thought he heard a banging on his door.

That was odd, glancing at the clock told him it was closing in on two in the morning. He was only expecting Granger, and she could Floo..right into…oh that’s right. He never invited her past the threshold. As of two hours ago, she didn’t live here anymore.

Thinking of a litany of ‘I told you so’ as he made his way to the front door when he heard something that made his blood turn to ice.

A bloodcurdling scream.

“HERMIONE!” Draco bolted forward, his fingers numb as he tried to grasp the handle of the door. Everything felt like it was happening in slow motion. As he recklessly wrenched the door open without having his wand, he registered Hermione pointing her wand at him.

Her face was bruised, bloody, frightened. But Draco recognized the determined, fierce look from years past. He saw a hooded figure behind her, it’s body imposing over hers, restraining her.

Before he could do anything, he saw her mouth move, the blood pumping in his ears blocking out any sound, as a spell erupted from Hermione’s wand. A protection spell cast so strong it forced him back into the apartment flat on his ass.

“HERMIONE!” Scrambling forward, he frantically threw himself against the spell, desperate to get outside. “LET HER GO! HERMIONE!”
Once he reached the threshold, he saw he was too late.

Hermione was gone.
