Chapter 2: Courageous curiosity

A loud thud woke Harry on the next day. He reached for his glasses to look for the disturbance. If was just after sunrise after all.

Harry blinked. A second time. He counted. Six owls sat perched on the windowsill. Six! Now, Harry also could see where his wake up call came from; Erold, the old Weasley owl, was among the birds.

He quickly opened the window and caught Pigwigeon before the small owl could utter a single screech. He carried two notes. One said \'Read first\', clearly written hastely by Ron, so he opened it.

\'Harry,

have you read the Daily Prophet? If not, do so before you read any other owls.

Ron\'

Harry arched an eye-brow. The Daily Prophet? Ah, yes, the owl was sitting right in the middle of all the other owls. He paid her and took the paper from the bird. He unfolded the paper and almost dropped it. The picture on the front page showed two dead bodies, both female. While one woman looked almost peaceful, if a little surprised, the other was extremely disfigured. Cracked open lines marred the body as well as the opened abdomen. The headline read \'Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange found dead at Malfoy Manor\'.

He closed his eyes. It was true, then. Both women were indeed dead. Quickly he flipped the paper to the title story.

\'Yesterday Narcissa Malfoy, wife of recently confirmed Death Eater Lucius Malfoy, and Bellatrix Lestrange, escaped convict, were found dead in the hall of Malfoy Manor. The Ministry\'s prime suspect is Lucius Malfoy, who broke out of prison two nights ago. The Dark Mark above the manor...\'

Harry didn\'t read on. This was ridiculous. Even if he hadn\'t been there in his dream Harry wouldn\'t believe it. This was not Malfoy like. Malfoys didn\'t slaughter, and Narcissa looked like she had been slain. But the Ministry obviously believed it. Granted, Malfoy did kill Bellatrix Lestrange, most likely using the unforgivable Killing Curse. But to think he\'d slay his own wife and leave her to be found in the manor, with the Dark Mark floating in the air, was just ludicrous.

He collected the roles of parchments from the other owls and sent them away, after feeding them owl treats. He looked at the clock; 5:34 am. Enough time to read and possibly answer the messages he got. He took Ron\'s second note first.

Hi again,

can you bloody believe it? Killing his own wife! Sick bastard. I bet he enjoyed killing those two. I don\'t know what they plan. I just don\'t want to know. When are you coming to visit? It\'s boring without you. Hermione spends the summer with her parents.

Ron

Harry,

be careful. You\'re the one that caught Malfoy. If he\'s capable of killing his own wife he might not care to not come to your home. Don\'t go outside alone. Don\'t run around after dark. Promise me to be careful.

Love,
Hermione

Harry dear,

Remus tells me they\'re collecting you tonight to bring you to us. Try not to run away this time.

Yours,
Molly Weasley

xxx

Dear Harry,

Tonks, Moody and I come to collect you tonight to bring you to the Weasleys. Be ready as soon as possible.

Remus

xxx

Harry,

is there something you\'d like to tell me?

Professor Dumbledore

Harry got up and started packing immidiately. He was getting out of here. And was going to stay with the Weasleys. Clearly, Ron had no idea about what was going on. Otherwise he would have written something in his note. But the one note that puzzled him was Dumbledore\'s. He had been asked this question several times by the Headmaster. And everytime he had been sure that Dumbledore knew exactly what was going on. As he was this time. But could he possibly know that Malfoy was innocent of Narcissa\'s murder? Did he know that Malfoy was on the run? From both the Ministry and Voldemort?

Where was Lucius Malfoy anyway? They all seemed to be more concerned about Harry\'s whereabouts and that he didn\'t venture outside than of the elder Malfoy.

Somehow, Harry even felt grateful. Now he knew for sure that the beast of a woman, Bellarix Lestrange, had indeed suffered before she had been killed. At the hands of a fellow Death Eater though, but still. She died. And now her killer was on the run. Wrongly accused of the murder of his wife. Harry even went so far to feel sorry for Lucius Malfoy.

He shook his head. Where was that coming from? Why was he feeling sorry for someone who had killed numerous people, raised a son who was Harry\'s bloody nemesis and acted in everyway like the sick bastard Harry suspected him to be?

The Slytherin within him told him to make good use of the information he had at hand. Use it against Malfoy. Both of them. But the Gryffindor roared at the injustice being done to someone. Even if it was a Death Eater. Well, a former Death Eater now. But Harry was sure Malfoy\'s attitudes hadn\'t simply changed because he fell.

But he killed Bellatrix Lestrange. And for that, Harry was endlessly grateful. Somehow he felt the urge to do something. His mind started to work. Lucius was on the run. Perhaps it was possible to protect Lucius from Voldemort.

Now, where did this thought come from? And since when did Harry think of the elder Malfoy as \'Lucius\'?

Dreams could do strange things to pe. Re. Really. Sometimes, they could change your life.

\"To hell with Voldemort!\" he thought angryly. \"To hell with dark magic and white magic. This is about injustice. And I don\'t give a damn if the person in question is Lucius Malfoy or the Pope.\"

He softly called the short-eared owl to him before he took a piece of parchment to write a short note.

Lucius,

I know what happened.

Harry

\"Go and find him for me. Let\'s see what happens.\"
