Chapter Three

One Only Understands the Things That One Tames
Chapter 3

Ariah approached the massive front doors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The doors swung open and she was face to face with Professor McGonagall, the deputy headmistress. Minerva McGonagall, generally a stern looking woman, greeted Ariah with a smile.

“Welcome back, Ariah,” she said, “We’ve missed you. You’ll find your quarters are the same as the last time you were here, as well as your classrooms. I’ve been temporarily teaching your classes.”

“How did you know I’d come back?”

“Albus knew. He said Hogwarts, or certain parts of it, is in your blood.”

Ariah smiled, “Yes, I think it is. I know I was at my happiest when I was here.”

“You’ll find that although the students change, most of the teachers here have remained primarily the same. Let me take you to Albus, dear. He’s so looking forward to seeing you.”

The walked the halls until they came upon the statue that guarded the final path to Albus Dumbledore’s office. McGonagall said the password and the door slid open.

“Come in, come in, come in, my dear,” said the smiling voice of Albus Dumbledore.

Ariah entered and was whisked into a hug from the old wizard. She smiled, happy to see Albus as well. She truly had missed Hogwarts, and not just the potions master.

“Welcome back to Hogwarts. I trust Minerva filled you in?”

“Yes, she did. My old rooms, my old classroom…”

“And new students. I had the loveliest talk with your sister, Anu. Charming goddess. She informed me of your mishap and your punishment. She also informed me of the decision that you made…and why you made it. I must say I am not as surprised as one might think. I always knew that Severus had something there…Anyway, none of my business, I suppose…”

“Does he know I’m here?”

“I haven’t informed him yet. No one else knows at this moment. It WAS a rather sudden decision, was it not?”

“Not as sudden as you might think, Albus,” Ariah smiled.

“In any event, I understand that you have the proper powers and I am pleased to present you with your license to Apparate. You know the routine. Your classes will start tomorrow. So, wander around, get reacquainted with the castle…”

Ariah heard a small sound coming from a large hat on a shelf. She looked at the hat quizzically. She knew it to be the Sorting Hat, used to assign first years to their respective Houses each September. The sound she heard sounded vaguely like someone clearing his throat.

“Albus, I think the Sorting Hat is trying to say something,” said Ariah with a little grin.

“What? Oh yes, sorry,” mumbled Albus as he removed a book that was covering the large rip that served as the Sorting Hat’s mouth, “what is it you wish to say?”

“Wouldn’t the goddess like to know her TRUE colors?” spoke the hat.

“Ariah?” asked Albus.

“What? Me? Sorted?”

“I admit, it is unusual unless we’re in search of a Head of House, but the hat seems to be interested in you.”

“Fine with me,” said Ariah, “It would be interesting to know what the hat makes of my traits.”

Ariah sat down and Albus placed the hat on her head. The hat thought for a moment and said in a sly voice: “You are very cunning and driven, you know that, right? You have untold power. You have the mind of a warrior, yet you are sometimes impulsive. If I were sorting you, I’d put you in…SLYTHERIN!”

Ariah laughed, “I can just see me explaining this one to Severus. He’s always thought I was a bit too Gryffindor for my own good, no offense intended, Minerva.”

“Oh, I’m sure Severus meant offense by it,” replied Minerva, a mischievous look in her eyes. Though Minerva and Severus often appeared to be at odds with one another, they truly liked and respected eacher.her. Minerva always wished that Severus would find someone to care about, someone who cared about him as well. And much to her pleasure, this raven-haired former goddess in front of her seemed to fit that bill. She knew that Ariah had given up being a goddess for the chance to live a life with the surly potions master. That was a huge leap of faith for anyone to take, more so Ariah who had been part of the most powerful force in the universe, the War Goddess Morrigan.

“Well dear, the hat sorted you into Slytherin, which means that I could make you the assistance Head of House,” said Albus.

“Like Severus would ever go for that,” smiled Ariah, “I’m going to get reacquainted with the castle ghosts and see Poppy.”

“And see how the dungeons have fared?” asked Albus.

“Not sure I’m ready for that yet, Albus, it’s been a long time and to be honest, I’m not really sure how Severus will react.”

Ariah smiled wistfully and gave Albus a hug, “I’ll let you know what happens, though.”

She left his office and walked to her quarters, happy to see her rooms set up the way they had been 2 years ago. She sat in the comfortable wing chair and stared out the window. She wondered what she would do if he didn’t want her there. What if she had misunderstood his note? Ariah knew she had to see Severus, even if only to look at him for a moment. She got up from the chair and headed to the dungeons. Along the way, she chatted briefly with the Bloody Baron, the Slytherin house ghost, who seemed to know what the Sorting Hat had said. When she approached the door to the Potions classroom, she felt her heart almost stop. She was afraid to look inside.

“Just take a quick peek,” prodded the Baron, “can’t hurt, you know.”

Ariah nodded and looked in the doorway. What she saw took her breath away. Severus. He looked good. Very good. Impossibly good. Ariah smiled as she heard his resonant voice chastise a student for not paying attention and putting two hairs in a numbing potion instead of three. She saw his dark scowl, his quick sneer, and the infamous eye rolling. He was in rare form, and Ariah found that irresistible. She had always liked his darker side. While she didn’t always appreciate the occasional truly cruel remark to a student (usually saved for Neville Longbottom, Ron Weasley, Harry Potter, or Hermione Granger…she wondered who would be taking their places now), she found his scare tactics sometimes amusing. He usually got the best out of his students, and those who didn’t give him their best were sorry for it.

Ariah felt something flutter behind her and land on her shoulder.

“He looks like a big old bat,” said a familiar voice in her ear.

“Shut up, Poe, he does not. What are you doing here?”

“Promised Macha I’d check up on you. What DO you see in him?”

“A lot more than you could imagine, Poe. You see the surface, I see the layers.”

“Well, I hope he’s got some pleasant layers, because the surface is a festering swampland of negativity.”

“How poetic,” said Ariah wryly.

“Yeah, yeah, bite me goddess girl.”

“You wish.”

“Bet HE does,” Poe pointed his beak at Severus, now glaring at a female Hufflepuff who looked about to cry.

“Do shut up and go away.”

“As you wish, milady,” said Poe, bowing his head to her, “Think I’ll stick around a bit though.”

“Suit yourself.”

Poe looked at her, his eyes glittering. He looked at the classroom, looked back at Ariah, and let out a loud caw before he swept down the dungeon hall. Severus stopped his lesson and looked at the door. He had glanced over too quickly for Ariah to hide. His deep black eyes locked onto Aria’s vivid blue ones and his eyes widened in surprised. Flustered, he gave her a pleading look as he gave the students a reading assignment. Ariah quietly walked to his office and sat down on his desk. She knew he would be joining her. In a moment’s time, Professor Severus Snape swept into his office and back into Ariah’s life.

“Hi,” she said cautiously.

“Hi yourself,” he replied.

“You look good.”

“Still not getting out much, I see.”

Ariah smiled, “I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve noticed your absence.”

“See you still have that same silver tongue.”

“You have no idea.”

Throwing caution to the wind, Severus swept Ariah into his arms and kissed her, first tenderly, then deeper and more searchingly. He had missed her. More than anything. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. She needed him as close as she could get him. Ariah ran her hands through his hair as she returned his kiss with passion. Her tongue fought with his for dominance, his won. Reluctantly, he broke off the kiss, smiling at her. His smile was the most beautiful thing Ariah had ever seen. His smiles weare, are, and when given, were something special, something to cherish. This would be a smile she would hold in her heart forever. This was a smile that said the words he couldn’t say.

“I love you too, Sev,” whispered Ariah, “Now get back to work.”
