Wrong Place at the Wrong Time

16 months earlier

Colin Creevey kissed his wife, Ginny, goodbye as he left for work. He was a photographer for the Daily Prophet and was to meet his boss at 8 o’clock a.m. Colin apparated into the office, a balding, stout old man stood staring out the window.

“You wanted to meet with me sir?” Colin said, startling the old man.

“Yes, Creevey. I have a story I need you to get for me.”

“What is it?”

“I have, on very good word, a tip that Oliver Wood, star captain of the Edinburgh Eagles Professional Quidditch team, will be in Diagon Alley today. I want some scoop. There are rumors bouncing around about his sexuality and whether he slept his way to the captains’ position, etc. Get me pictures and quotes if you can.”

“Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.” Colin nodded as he stepped out of the man’s office and into the sea of cubicles and partitions. He stumbled into his area and made a list of possible questions and possible scenarios he could capture Oliver Wood in. He grabbed his camera and put a small quill behind his ear.

He walked out into Diagon Alley. There were very few people in the street, partly because of the earliness of the day and partly because Voldemort was becoming more powerful and people were too afraid to leave the safety of their homes. Colin walked through the alley and decided to stop at Quality Quidditch Supply. Maybe Oliverin hin here. Colin walked in and saw that the store was empty except for a table stacked full of thick Quidditch Strategy Manuals written by none other than, Oliver Wood. No wonder he’s going to be here, Colin shook his head and headed back into the street.

He walked down to Flourish & Blotts and spotted Oliver inside. He walked in and hid behind a shelf. He saw Oliver standing with a man and a woman. The woman seemed to be flirting with him… click…Oliver turned and laughed heartily at the man, brushing his hand across the man’s chest… click. This went on for twenty minutes. Colin just kept taking pictures, not knowing which way this story would go. He watched as Oliver and his companions walked out of the store. Colin snapped a picture liveliver’s arm around the waist of the man and at the same time that he was holding the woman’s hand. He tried to get another picture, but had run out of film. Even magical film takes a minute to replenish itself, so Colin knew he would have to catch up to Oliver at the other store.

Colin walked out of the store and didn’t register the screams emanating from the other side of the street. He was looking down at his feet… BOOM! He hadn’t noticed the dark hooded figure in front of him. He had run face first into a Death Eater. His camera went crashing to the ground, but before Colin could pick it up, the Death Eater had smashed it with a quick spell.

Colin looked up at the large figure. “Do you have a problem, boy?” the hooded figure asked.

“No, sir. No problem.”

“And to think, you were a Gryffindor? Gryffindors are supposed to be courageous and all you can say is ‘no sir, no problem’?” The dark figure let out an evil high pitched laugh before yelling, “Crucio!” Colin’s body started to convulse and writhe in pain.

Suddenly, ten men in dark red cloaks appeared and started shouting curses at the Death Eaters. Colin looked at them and saw his friend Harry in the pack. Once the cursing slowed. Colin saw Harry coming toward him.

“Oh, poor Harry Potter’s friend…” another Death Eater came toward Colin, “I wonder what Potter would do if we… Avada Kadavra!”

Harry couldn’t move. A Death Eater hust ust killed his best friend’s husband for being hisfriend. Harry grasped his wand tig and and started shouting Unforgivables at the Death Eaters gathered around Colin’s body. The next thing Harry knew, he was kneeling beside Colin and three other Aurors had taken his place in the cursing. After a few long minutes, the Death Eaters disapparated and the Aurors were left to clean up the mess of bodies scattered across the street.

After he saw that Colin’s body was taken care of, Harry tried to survey the damage. He saw Oliver Wood peek his head out of Quality Quidditch Supply and quickly head back in. Harry and the other Auror’s finished their duties and headed back to the Ministry.

“Ginny, I am so sorry,” Harry held her tightly as she sobbed into her best friend’s chest. “I tried to get to him before… I was just too slow. I should have been able to save him.”

Ginny looked at him, “Harry, don’t you dare blame yourself. It was his idiot editor that sent him out there in the first place. No one knew that Death Eaters would be there. How could they?”

“Do you want my help telling the girls?” Harry asked as Ginny got up from the sofa wiping her eyes.

“No, I’ll be all right. You have had a hard day, go be with Melissa. Ron will be here soon, I’ll be all right.” Harry could tell this was only a front, but was not going to make matters worse by arguing.

He kissed her on the forehead before walking to the door. “Ginny, if you need anything, let me know. I will be here in a heartbeat.”

“Thanks, Harry.”

Present day

“I don’t even know why he was there, of all people, why did it have to be Colin?” Harry could see her eyes were shiny with tears. “I know it’s been almost a year and a half, and I should be healed, I just can’t do it.”

Harry moved from across the table to sit next to her wrapping an arm around her, “No one is wanting you to be completely healed. Healing takes a long time. We just want to see you move on. Gin, you are strong. You have survived more pain and heartache than many people will ever know. You can do this.”

Ginny wrapped her arms around Harry. “I know, Harry. I am just so afraid of being alone. “

“Gin, you’ll never be alone. None of your family or me will ever let that happen.”

Ginny looked up at him and he saw her tears flowing freely down her cheeks. His attempts to wipe them away were futile, as more tears flowed over. He held her and let her cry for what seemed like hours. She needed it. She had kept everything bottled up for so long, this was her release.

“Thank you, Harry.” Ginny whispered into his chest.

“You’re welcome, Gin,” Harry replied as his softly kissed the top of her head
